Saturday 13th October

FA CARLSBERG VASE First Round Proper

4-3* Amersham Town v Flackwell Heath

A report on this one from another Forum:

FA Vase 1st Round Proper

Amersham Town 4-3 Flackwell Heath

aet, 2-2 at 90 mins

Adm+prog £5, tea/coffee 60p

A cracking cup tie that had just about everything, and ending up with the step 6 team beating their step 5 visitors. Amersham started brightly but couldn't convert any chances and were made to pay when Flackwell scored twice in the latter part of the first half.

The home team again started brightly after the break but a host of chances went begging until that slice of luck arrived and the Flackwell keeper was adjudged to have spilt the ball behind the line and a goal given. Plenty more chances at either end but it wasn't until the 92nd minute that a home player ran in from the right, skipped a couple of tackles, got into the box where the defenders were too scared to challenge, rounded a couple more and slid the ball into the corner for a great equaliser.

Extra time was no less entertaining with Amersham finally taking the lead for the first time at 3-2 with a great through ball. A penalty brought the teams level again and both teams knew that they could win it provided they could keep going in sapping conditions including several heavy downpours during the game. Players were cramping up, one visitor slid into a barrier and was taken off to the changing rooms for treatment only to appear five minutes later to return to the fray, gingerly holding his shoulder for a few minutes. Finally deep into the final period, the ball broke to one of the Amersham players worst affected by cramp who really didn't want it. He did manage to lay it off though and the resulting move ended up in the box and finished neatly to win the game. There were still nervous moments as the second half of extra time took about 25 minutes not least because of a dearth of match balls towards the end of the game.

Amersham old town certainly goes into the list of very nice towns to visit. A lovely high street of old buildings and a market hall. A fine lunch was had in the Elephant and Castle.

FA CARLSBERG VASE First Round Proper

0-3 Clapton v Cockfosters

A lengthy report on this one from another Forum:

FA Carlsberg Vase, First Round Proper

Clapton 0(0)-(1)3 Cockfosters

Old Spotted Dog Ground, Upton Lane, Forest Gate, London E7

Attendance: 43 (looked nearer 70, possibly officials?)

Admission: £6. Programmes had sold out

Also purchased in clubhouse: Mars bar and bottle of water = £1.40

Many years since I have done a daytime game at this ground, but as this was the Tons' best Vase run (if one can call it that!) in some nine years, I thought it would be nice to pop back. Despite being bottom of the Essex Senior League, the Tons have been very unlucky by all accounts in many games this season, and if they had a proven goalscorer would be much higher, as there are far worse teams than them this season despite what the table says. However today was always going to be tough against the side second in Spartan South Midlands Division 1, and so it proved. Clapton may have upset the odds slightly in the last round with a win at Hillingdon Borough, but the visitors were pretty much dominant for most of this match, and despite Clapton being on the receiving end of some terrible decisions from the Essex Senior League referee, the result was ultimately a fair reflection on the game. Still, it was nice to a better crowd here, mostly packed into the stand, although quite a few SSML officials were also in attendance with their blazers and badges and all that...

A sign of things to come early on when a Cockfosters shot came back off the post, and another volley went narrowly wide. Halfway through the first period though they inevitably took the lead when a player just inside the box lobbed the keeper, and the ball bounced into the bottom corner. It was almost two a few minutes later, with the goalie making a fine stop, tipping a shot onto the bar. But it was the visitors who had most of the possession, with Clapton offering very little at all, often failing to escape their own half, although the Tons did improve a little before the end of the first 45.

Manager Chris Wood must have had a good word with his side at half time, as they started the second half much brighter, although the Cockfosters keeper wasn't really tested. It looked like the Vase tie was still alive, but on 56 minutes, a bit of a hammer blow for the hosts, when a corner was never really cleared out of harm's way, and a cross back into the six yard box was headed in at the far post. Moments later it was almost game over when a defender nearly turned into his own net, but with just under twenty minutes to go, Cockfosters killed the game off, when a player turned his man just inside the box, sold the keeper a dummy and slotted into the corner.

To be fair to Clapton they did keep going, and with the away side perhaps backing off a bit, might have had a very faint lifeline, had the referee given a penalty for a Tons player felled inside the six yard box, which somehow the linesman also missed. In the last minute a consolation should have been added when a Clapton player ran clear, but going into the box he seemed to stop and then got the ball stuck under his feet, totally short on confidence, which would explain the club's goal shyness. Before the end, the referee once again made himself a figure of hate with the Clapton faithful, when a Tons player was fouled, but no free kick was given, instead giving the victim a second yellow (dissent?). A bad day for the man in black, and a disappointing result for the Tons, as predictably their mini Vase run came to an end.

Although the ground is still (and always will be) a complete dump, a small band of loyal volunteers have been doing their best to improve the club, and this season have been working on tidying up the ground, removing rubbish/fly-tipping etc, improving historic relations with a certain Premiership club down the road (including David Gold coming down to see a game the other week), and promoting the club on Twitter, posters etc (I was annoyed at missing out on a programme as this season the volunteers have put together a superb glossy edition). The side of the clubhouse facing the pitch has also been re-plastered/painted, making it look a little better. Rumours are that London Bari are planning to redevelop the ground to get it back up to step 4 standard this season, but I don't even think they have sent the plans in yet to Newham Council! Besides it will take a huge amount of work to bring the OSD back upto Ryman standard. I suspect they have not thought things through....

As for Clapton it's always going to be an uphill battle to get even fifty-plus crowds to the Dog, as like other clubs in the area the ethnicity of the area has totally changed into one which doesn't have football as an interest (at least, not local anyway). The ongoing closure/rotting of the boarded up Tudor OSD bar next door and the grotty tyre place don't help either. I know the council are trying to take over the building from the private neglectful owners, but whether the listed building can be saved is unknown, to the fear of many locals. It certainly looks unlikely to return to a working bar, even if the building is put back into use.

Saturday 13th October

FA CARLSBERG VASE First Round Proper

3-2 Colney Heath v Sporting Bengal United

A report on this one from another Forum:

FA Vase 1st Round

Recreation Ground

Colney Heath 3-2 Sporting Bengal Utd

[12th of 22 SSMP] v [17th of 19 ESL]

Attendance: Official 50

Admission £6 incl prog - had the usual content - nice glossy paper. Useful bits on visitors too.

Directions: M25 jn 22 - head east/north to Colney Heath at Roundabout on minor road (Coursers Lane) for a couple of miles - left at main road in 'town' next to the (derelict?) Queens Head and opposite the Crooked Billet - Colney Heath's ground and Parking north past the Cock pub - turn in right nr the School.

Facilities: Is a public parking area leading up to the turnstiles and more parking inside the ground. Clubhouse in two parts - roomy larger (back) bar also had a food hatch but no Burgers available today.

Fair amount of seating in front of the clubhouse but not much else by way of cover.

Match: Very even contest in spite of the straight Red shown to the home FB midway 1st half - not sure what for. Numbers 'evened' up later in 2nd half when away CB dismissed for a 2nd yellow.

Both sides very accomplished on the ball - SBU too wasteful in front of goal - missed about half a doz. 1 on 1's with the keeper and never made their (temporary) superior numbers tell. Did get a bit feisty later on but Ref and Assistants just about kept the peace.

Think I may have been standing near the venerable Elaine W. (SSML Website co-ord as well as Sec. duties for Colney H - & I believe on the day was filling in as club photographer?) for some of 1st half - sincerest apols I didn't introduce myself. I was with the young lad in the RFC hat and the distinctly dodgy-looking bloke in the yellow jacket.

M25 eerily quiet for a Sat PM - home by 18:00h - though I understand it was completely sh#&&£d anti-clockwise jns 8-10 - so lucky we didn't go for Lingfield or Sevenoaks.

BERKS & BUCKS INTERMEDIATE CUP Second Round

6-0 Risborough Rangers v Lane End

Welldone Risborough Rangers.

Cheers Mr Bee. A comfortable win. One up in our first attack and 4-0 by half time. Poor second half, but my lad notched a couple to make it 6-0.

Well done on getting a draw at Oxhey and also to Amersham on beating Flackwell. We beat Amersham 3-0 a month ago and based on their performance that day I couldn't see them beating Flackwell, but all credit to them.
