A fans match report

As this is a fans forum here's the match report from a fan -

Margate were totally inept against a side from a lower division in a competition which has potential for big financial rewards and includes tv exposure in a round or two and any attempt on goal of which there were precious few was nowhere near the target. The tactics dictated were inadequate for the ocassion as home fans were clearly heard to remind particularly in the second half. At no time was there any player "on the back of the box" at corners and free kicks and that's where the ball inevitably ended up in an attempt to clear the extremely tall visiting defenders. Everybody huddled together on the left hand side of the park any time our keeper took a goal kick. The opposition players were also very tired particularly in the first half as they kept finding the need to lay down on the pitch. The music, clearly dedicated to the sponsors, was good stuff as it was instantly recognisable tracks from that big group. The sponsors choice of MOM was met with derisive laughter and more than one shout to the effect that there was no MOM so why bother to choose one.

OK I have counted the seconds now before posting so heres my views.

Firstly WHY do we always kick off by shooting the the ball down to the sideline. I know this has come up before but we are STILL doing the same old thing and getting absolutely nothing from it. In fact we are showing our negativity to start with by gifting the opposition the ball. As I've said previously on this IF this is to be then direct a shot direct from the kick-off at the keeper. That way at least we have a chance of something going our way. We might even catch the keeper out and score from it. As it is I'm fed up to my back teeth of seeing this occur game after game. Whoever thought this up needs to think again & needs a kick up the backside for believing we are going to gain out of it.

Ok,on to the game itself. Now I am a great fan of BALL but please someone tell me why was he playing when ALAILE has been superb in that position overall. I dont think ALAILE was injured so why the need to change personel. BALL has been out injured but surely has to wait till his chance comes round again. The replacement needs to show poor form for BALL to get his place back and I havent seen ALAILE let us down.In fact I would say he has more on offer in his mobility.Ball's howler, though uncharacteristic for him gifted them a goal when in reality they hadn't deserved one.

Next,as others have mentioned why wait so long to put BODKIN out there.I saw him warming up long before he got on.This guy can create openings. We weren't creating any yesterday so why not make the the change earlier. Why does CK ignore him more often.Thay gives me cause to question why not

Another substitution caught me by surprise...WHITNELL. When needing "something" to happen why bring on a player who is so out of form. CKs persistent with him has me again asking questions, When he plays we are playing with 10 men with his form as it is. Oh yes with persistence I'm sure he will come good but he hasnt impressed me one iota thus far.To bring him on in his form when we required something to happen wasnt the right move, again i.m.o.We were looking for improvement to force an equaliser. Sorry but he wasn't the man to do that & others on that bench deserve a chance to shine. We keep saying how good the depth in the squad is.use it!

My man DOLBY did okay but even he wasnt doing a lot though he was certainy doing more than others were doing. I have watched hm closely since he's come here and one particular thing I have noticed about his play that he isnt that clever with dead ball kicks. His first corner kick was poor and hardly reached the near post and his second corner kick, with adjustment went way over to the far corner. If It is so noticable about DOLBY's dead ball kicks why hasn't the management seen it and got someone else to take the kicks.? Even STUBBS kicks leave a lot to be desired.

We are lacking a corner kick taker now that Wilson has gone. Oh wait a minute, no we aren't, we have one in BODKIN but he wasnt on the field was he? If I can notice this about DOLBY's dead ball kicks why hasn't the management?

Hoofing the ball everytime isn't our game so why do it. Play it on the ground more, find a man, take that route. Even Slough showed us how to play it on the ground more often than not.

We lost to a very mediocre side but WE lost it. It wasn't won by them though obviously they must take some credit. We gave them the game & WE could have won this in a canter had we performed even 20% more to how we usually perform. It wouldnt have taken much more to get back into this game.

I'm very saddened that once again we lose out to a "minnow" when we shouldn't have done. Mental Attitude - Was that spot on?. Maybe, maybe not but we need to get back to playing as we have been this season,in the main, and by reverting back to playing it on the ground more.

This game to me is more than one that got away it was suicide.

League games are going to be our priority from now on so a vast improvement is needed otherwise our position in the league will deteriorate also and we'll then have nothing to play for whatsover.

I am expecting a massive improvement on Tuesday night. A MASSIVE improvement. Gates are going to fall again after today and the management and the majority of players need to take responsibilty for this about to happen. The attendance figure was gradually rising before today and its going to take a while longer again now to get that figure on an upward curve again.

A bad bad day & I hope we have seen the last of these kind of days. Now then lets get back to winning ways and better football again the way we CAN play.Time to step up to the mark again.

Why am I as the sponsor of the Match, being held responsible for their performance. All we have done is try and put a few pouds in the MFC funds. My guest had a headache choosing MOM, quite rightly we saw no one worthy. People saying perhaps NO ONE should have been awarded MOM, do you not think that was also said by all the Football Supporters in the sponsors lounge. At the end of the day it is expected that the sponsors would award a MOM to a Margate player so we took our duty and did so.

I do not take lightly to being held responsible for the poor performance on the day.

i think ANY improvement will do after the Slough game so Tuesday's game will be a chance to put things back on track and guess on a brighter side we are still unbeaten in the league so not all bad. Thing is with football if we can get a few wins on the trot this FA cup game will soon be forgotten but shame about the cash...... I also think a few of the players that played on Tuesday night deserved a chance in the starting line up in the cup game and would not be suprised to see two or three of the 'bench' players starting in Tuesday's league game

Fully expect to see Alaile come in for Ball on Tuesday night. Hope Long has recovered to take his place on the right wing. We've sorely missed the balance he brings to the side. CK has to back Whitnell. He showed what he is capable of with two excellent goals at Kingstonian, and has been a little unlucky since. Rook and Whitnell up top, back to plan A.

First and only GOOD constructive comment about yesterday.

Thankyou Paul.

Alaile won't be in for bally Tuesday, why is everyone going on about gifting them a goal we gifted a much poorer team than slough a goal on Tuesday but of course it didn't matter then as we scored 6 could have been 12, don't think we got in the slough box 6 times yesterday. i am rooks biggest fan but he wasn't at the races yesterday,is he a flat track bully? Whitnell has looked at his best when playing off an in form rook with him off the pitch i agree Whitnell wasn't the man to change things.

Methinks there are some very pertinent comments in this thread - Cookie has said what a lot of us have been saying week in week out. After they scored and we kicked off guess where the ball went ? As for blaming the sponsors for the performance I do not quite understand how that is construed - if my simple comments on the debacle yesterday have caused offence to the sponsors then I apologise but still say that MOM could and should have been sidestepped. Last Tuesday's sponsors didn't turn up for the game and I was one of the few there and heard nothing from anyone about the lack of choosing one. Think possibly the players would appreciate the fans choice more which we did in selecting Alex Rhodes who should have been in from the start yesterday after his trio..

Mark I can't see anywhere that says you are being blamed for our poor performance. How could you be? Good on you for sposoring too.I'm sure everyone appreciates your many sponsorships, Its only the matter of choice for the motm that seemed odd on the day thats all..

I like Alaile, but don't forget Faversham's second goal at their place. There are no perfect players at this level.

very true CE regarding perfect players.....but commitment, enthusiasm, showing interest in the cause, playing for the club, list goes on that should be at every level

Performance was depresing. Can't understand kick off at all, althogh dosnt matter when were winning. Can't understand ball in for alalie. Rook for once was the one who was bullied by defender instead of other way round. Man of match was a joke, sorry but it really was. Losing will be woorse if slough get a glamor confrence match next round. Hopefully players will no fans are upset and make it right on tuesday night.

Can't argue with that. As much as I like Ball I think he should have had to wait for his chance. Alaile is pretty handy for this league.

Correct they DIDN'T turn up for the game, hence they did NOT have to choose a MOM. But 6 of us in the sponsors lounge were also there on Tuesday. And quite the opposite i commented to the people around me that there is no one to choose MOM. When the team is playing well it is very easy/or easier to choose a MOM, when they perform like the crap we witnessed on Saturday, it is very very difficult to appoint a MOM. And as stated early i bet there has over the 40+ seasons I seen Margate play, there has been many a game where a MOM wasn't warranted, but was still delivered.

The boys played badly and they know they did, they did not go out onto the field and think "I know we'll put in a Shite perfomance", but like it or not some games they do.

Feeling bitter and angry as all of us MFC supporters are feeling, we must/should encourage the boys TO DO BETTER, and move forward.

"I'm saying nothing".

Except, it was a shame that the academy lads had to witness this performance as,for some it was their initial experience of our "1st team".
