Jeff Trice
Just made an amazing discovery which I thought I'd share - footage of Margate's 1-1 draw with Notts County in the FA Cup in 1961. Have a look and wonder to yourself how on earth Tommy Barnett got credited with the Margate goal when the film clearly shows he was nowhere near getting a touch - ball hits the wall and then goes in off another County defender... http://www.itnsource.com/en/shotlist//ITN/1961/11/25/FS251161013/?s=margate&st=0&pn=
marksandwell
And the official attendance given by Margate was
Jeff Trice
Amazing to see such clear film of a packed Hartsdown Park, last time I saw an own goal as blatant as that awarded to a Margate player must have been around a month ago.
DEREK
Remember it well, sat in the North stand (it was north in those days) lucky county got thier goal with just a few minuets to go, Tony Hatley I believe. Although I stand to be corrected.
Jeff Trice
You may stand or even sit whilst I correct you Derek... http://www.margatefchistory.com/nottscounty1961.shtml ...thanks for giving me the excuse to plug my site though ! Coffin Ender
Jeff's right, Derek, their goal wouldn't have been scored by that bloke from Spandau Ballet.

P.W.
Reading the report of the Replay on Jeff's site it states Margate had a 10 hour coach journey to get to Meadow Lane. 10 hours ? That's about 20mph !

Jeff Trice
I suspect Coffin Ender might have realised that but he won't be upset if he has made a mistake - he's indestructable. Always believe that.

zorba
.... Can you see me behind the goal? ;-) Nice to see the old margate playing strip. Any idea what the "real" attendance figure or is a zero missing? (maybe the team coach was stuck on the M25!)
DEREK
What M25 was that then.
zorba
Ooops, about 20 years ahead of my time. Ah well, back to the clapped out coach theory then?
Coffin Ender
Floodlight pylons behind the goals? Would anyone know when they were removed? Can't say I've ever seen that at another ground.
Jeff Trice
The original 1959 floodlights were replaced in the summer of 1964 so would assume that's when the ones behind the goals were removed. Anybody would think you haven't read every word of the club history page on my site...
SteveB
Floodlight pylons behind the goals? Would anyone know when they were removed? Can't say I've ever seen that at another ground. Some poorly populated stadium nearby certainly still had the in the 80's. I am pretty sure the bases of the Hartsdown ones were still visible up until demolition.
