Enfield Town vs Bishop's Stortford

Sorry to say again, but this performance shows once again that some players in the squad are not up to the level we are now playing in.

Stortford have been a Blue Square North side for a while, but Town's team was a Ryman North one. Where have we improved from last season ?

Ricky Sappleton took us apart with 2 unmarked headers.

Why was the biggest player in their side being marked by Craig McKay ( good player but not the biggest guy in a Town shirt ).

Once again our midfield gave the ball away so so many times and created nothing for the front players.

When will they learn that they need to retain possession !!

Our front man Liam just drops deeper and deeper to become involved and we are left short up front.

This has been the way so far this season.

Final moan - Town had ONE shot on target in 90+ minutes ( and scored ) against a keeper who looked unsure for most of the game.

One shot !!!!

Sums it up really.

Good luck to Bish Stortford in the next round.

Onwards and Upwards,.......... let's hope for a better showing in the Trophy next week.

Old Towner I'm sorry to say but their No 6 seemed to be their biggest player. All round they were bigger than us so I agree we needed to be tighter to them at set pieces at least to put them off a little. Free header for their 2nd goal. On the other matter Steve hasn't got the resources just to out players and replace them , it needs to be gradual to make sure if he replaces he gets a better player in. 13 th after six games and here come the critics.

Hear Hear!

As someone who supports another club as well as Town who has just been promoted and who also operates on a tight budget supporters need to be patient!

It is a big step up and supporters need to come to terms with the fact the Town are not going to win as many as in previous years and it takes time to acclimatise...

To get players in they have to be better than what you have and fit!

and financing these players can be a major issue.

Supporters need to get behind the team and give it time - 13th is not to be scoffed at given the above...

Whilst not disagreeing with the essence of your post. There were actually two shots on target the second shot was saved late in the second half.

Criticisms,

Liam does go deep and perhaps he should stay closer to the wingers once they have the ball. On at least one occassion, Tyler, who was man of the match for us but I did not hear an award yesterday, collected controlled the ball and passed into space inside where he should have expected Liam to be but Liam was back in the centre circle.

Posters know that I have great admiration for Jey but yesterday with fast forwards against them he seemed to be ball watching far too much without covering the wide player. He does drift inside and seem to mark space on occasions. We know he can tackle and control the ball. At times he does long diagonal runs but has never been tried, as far as I know, in midfield.

Why were we ineffective in the tackle with forwards running in.

I also thought that the ref let BS off with rough housing.

Interesting stuff , we lost 4-1 however,

Technically we were superior; Joe O'brien was the best plyer on the ball on the park and for the fisrt 60 minutes we kept the ball very well and continually recycled it in our defensive and midfield thirds.

Tactically we were hugely inferior to the point of being naive. It reminede me of how we were totally out thought by Needham Makt at the game at Cheshunt , depsite drawing 2-2 at Cheshunt last season.

I love the fact we play 4-3-3 but sometimes it has to change. The BS bench very quickly picked up the 'patterns' we were trying to play and simply sat with a very well organised flat back four. I am not sure whether one of their defenders ventured beyond half way following our opneing goal.

We could not play around them ( except for a couple of crosses that Jay got in midway through the first half) and we could not play through them. As Liam dropped deepr he was shaddowed by one (enormous) centre half whilst the other ( even more enormous ) centre half took a step off the other three and swept. It was clever , precise and organised.

Had we gone 4-4-2 and changed our shape it would at least have made them think... encourage their full backs to press on and maybe created space for Jordan and or Jey.

Personally, I thought the players did well and broadly did what they were asked to.

Sorry to disagree, but I did not think we were 'technically better'. The guys tried their best but were out muscled and outplayed by a team a division above them. We have done it to teams below us in the past so what goes around comes around. Mind you, I think we scored the best goal of the day.

I totally agree we were outmsucled. BS were very well organised and played to their (physical) strengths. However, until we got stretched (from about 55 minutes ) I felt we kept he ball far better and completed more passes ( I may be wrong?) but in areas that they (Stortford) were happy with. Until their first goal they simply played the ball from the full back into the channel either having bounced it off of the two deep lying cental midfield players or staright from the fullback. They made no attempt to play through the middle.

I'm not suggesting that they did not deserve the victory or play well and in a very effective manner but ( on the day ) in terms of; ball retention , awareness , pass completion and ability on the ball I did not think that any of their side showed the same compusure as Joe. Ergo, I thought he was technically the best performer on the day. Just a personal observation.

Interesting observation from a former ref "out muscled".

The ref let the game flow and there was no dangerous play as far as I could see. However there were quiet a few challenges from BS that were not blown up for by the ref, at least one of which was inside the box. 20 years ago I would not have bothered however, it seems, that this sort of play is not acceptable nowadays, at least, not in the premier of Ryman league.

We were not allowed to run through without being elbowed or pushed off the ball. There was one occasion when Tyler was caught in the box he still kept going for the ball but fell half a step further on when he realised the ball had gone. I have seen premier division players immediately go down in similar situations.

When BS ran through the centre we seemed fearful of touching them. Perhaps they were more professional and if they had been touched they would have made the most of it.

What do you think Andy?

Some very good and thought provoking points. Agree with most, we were playing against a very big side - it's not often you see Kirby giving away 2-3 inches to an opposing centre half.

BS just played to their strengths. 2 headed goals conceded from corners tells everyone all they need to know about how big they were. Thought they were well organised with their captain (number 6?) playing just in front of the big four. Think townendleftside makes a valid point for us switching formations as the 4-3-3 leaves us just too stretched across the front going forward and too stretched in midfield when we're defending. It would be nice to see a 4-4-2 with full backs/wide midfielders bombing on.

We can certainly match sides when it comes to passing; once our players learn what they get punished for at this level we'll start to see the goals conceded come down. We can score goals, just think we need to mix up the formation as said just to get us kick started again.

Onwards and upwards then, if the players can learn from their individual mistakes they can only get better.

I personally dont feel we have 3 good enough midfielders to play the current formation. Until we get some players in who can make an attaking pass rather than a short 5 yard pass only, we will struggle. We also seem to get the ball wide alot but very rarely cross the ball into the box? We also need to tighten up at the back and maybe a 0-0 wouldnt do us any harm at the minute.
