Your Top 10 Favourite Bands

Recommended Posts

Everybody has a top 10 of bands/artists they admire, so who's in your list?

Mine is:

1) Queen - For me, the best British band ever (the Beatles are a VERY close second). Simply phenomenal, from making the seminal Bohemian Rhapsody to selling out Wembley and Knebworth in 1986. Even after Freddie's death in 1991, they are still popular and touring and thrilling fans the world over.

2) The Beatles - What can you say about John, Paul, George and Ringo that hasn't already been said - amazingly gifted individuals who became the biggest band of the 1960s (with apologies to Rolling Stones and Who fans!) and also produced some fantastic work when they went solo in 1970 following the break-up of The Beatles. Like with Queen, their music will definitely stand the test of time.

3) Status Quo - The oldest rockers keep rocking all over the world and keep gaining fans of all ages. Still not sure whether they've found the fourth chord yet! Even the Grandparents can head-bang to Whatever You Want!

4) XTC - Britain's Biggest Unknowns. How the music of Messrs. Partridge and Moulding is not more widely appreciated is almost sinful. Hailing from the hot-bed of music known as Swindon, they have recorded beautifully crafted songs like 'Mayor Of Simpleton' (not a reference to Boris Johnson!) 'Making Plans For Nigel' and 'Senses Working Overtime.'

5) Def Leppard - This band deserve respect for overcoming the double tragedies of drummer Rick Allen losing his arm and the loss of Steve Clark in 1991 to drink and drugs. They are a very close knit band and despite not being able to equal the successes of Pyromania (1983) and Hysteria (1987) in modern times they still managed to headline Download twice in recent years (2009 and 2011).

6) Genesis - This includes both the Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins 'eras'. Innovative 'Progsters' who after a decade of works like The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway and Nursery Crymes became more mainstream in the 1980s with 'Invisible Touch', 'Mama', 'Throwing It All Away' and were not afraid to attack the corrupt institutions of politics (Land Of Confusion) and religion (Jesus He Knows Me)..

7) Squeeze - Reformed again for the umpteenth time and touring the UK in a few months, Squeeze are one of the best bands to have come out of the 70s new wave era. Hits like Hourglass, Tempted, Labelled With Love, Pulling Mussels From The Shell, Up The Junction and Goodbye Girl are instantly memorable.

8) Duran Duran - The Wild Boys of Birmingham pioneered the New Romantics movement (along with a certain Islington based band fronted by a Tony Hadley) and have more hits than most modern bands have had hot breakfasts - from Planet Earth, Grls On Film and The Reflex to modern hits like Reach up For The Sunrise and All You Need Is Now. Their 14th Album is released next February.

9) Electric Light Orchestra - The best thing to come out of Birmingham since the M5! Unique and never made a bad record - listen to Out Of The Blue if you get chance, it is an amazing record.

10) Fleetwood Mac - A fantastic band whose albums Rumours and Tango In The Night are among the best albums ever made by any group. Despite their troubles they have managed to create some of the most memorable records ever from The Chain (used in F1 Racing) to Dreams, Everywhere and Little Lies.

Interesting list Adam, glad to see XTC on there.

My list is a little different though and in no particular order

1. Joy Division/New Order (strictly speaking 2 different bands but as 75% of the members are the same and the catalogues overlap I'll count them as one)

2. Interpol

3. REM

4. Half Man Half Biscuit

5. Sparks

6. Echo and the Bunnymen

7. The Associates (Billy Mackenzie is the greatest voice ever)

8. Pixies

9. Rainbow

10.Talking Heads

I've probably missed someone obvious and ask me tomorrow and the list would be different.

What people like is very much their own choice so why you have to comment on it is unnecessary. However we all know the reason why and I've stated it many times. You would do yourself a lot more favours though if you actually bothered to answer a question or stick to the topic.........beyond you I know but we can all but hope.

Rhodes, so much for your ability to "read people like a book" - the impression you get from a long-haired male wearing a denim jacket is that he's obviously a Tony Bennett fan!

You're also forgetting an on-line conversation we had about music a few years ago in which I mentioned I was listening to one of the bands listed above and you, no doubt googling frantically, claimed to know all about them!

I doubt you know anything about Queensryche either, you just picked one of the bands at random from my list.

So, who makes your list?
