Ref Assaulted Non CCL.

Smudge

Whilst officiating at a Croydon Municipal League match yesterday Referee Richard Gould was assaulted from behind by an FC Apolonia player, rendering him unconscious, and causing Facial injuries.Police and Ambulance crews were called to attend the Incident,Mr Gould was taken to hospital for treatment then released later that day,but things worsened and he had to return later that evening. He was kept in overnight for observation.Credit must be given to the Kobs FC players who chased the Player at the ground Norman Park,Bromley, and held him under Citizens arrest, but unfortunately other FC Apolonia players then threatened them with the use of knives,so they wisely stood back, allowing the culprit to escape on foot.He did however leave behind his Transport,a decent Mercedes Car,which the Police impounded when they finally arrived.FC Apolonia are an Albanian side,Kobs FC are a Ugandan side, who everyone in the League talk highly of not only for their Football Skills, but their behaviour on and off the pitch.1 arrest has been made, but funnily enough the Apolonia Manager did not know the Culprits name, even though every player who plays in the League has Photo I.D. and has to fill in a Registration Form. The culprit is still at Large.Hope for the Surrey F.A to throw the book at FC Apolonia, and all their Players including the Manager,a life ban would not be out of order. And for the person who attacked Richard,to be given a lengthy jail term.Would also like to wish RICHARD a speedy recovery,I have met and spoke to him on a few occassions, and as well as being a competent Official,he is a thoruoghly NICE CHAP.

Incidents like this just make you wonder what is wrong with some people.

Like you say, I hope he's given a lifetime ban from the game and spends time in jail for his crime.

As you know smudge my club play in that league and apolina are animals, season after season they are in trouble and this has to stop, think in 2 years they have had 4 or more players sent off. Football has no place for clubs like this at any level and discussed with league chairman about them being removed.

The club should be suspended until they give the name of the player involved. Then invesitgated further as to whether they should be allowed to continue in the League. Any half decent team would give up the name and ban the player for life from their club.

This is a horrific incident and I hope that the referee recovers well, and that justice prevails!

I had the pleasure of refereeing Kobs in a county cup game last season. Went all the way to penalties. I was impressed by their skill, sportsmanship and general behaviour at the match... their team had a real community feel to it, especially the banter from the sidelines!

I'm a bit dubious of these one-country clubs. I can see the attraction of them from a players perspective but it does nothing for social integration. I should have thought there was a desire in the County FAs to promote better integration and get Albanians, Ugandans, Venezualans, Korean and whatever playing alongside one another rather than constantly against one another?

All we get from this story is Ugandans good, Albanians bad but I'm sure that's an oversimplification.

Quality social commentary there Lee Farmie.

My youth side played a team in the Hants County Cup last year from Southampton. They were set up to integrate Polish children into the local community and it appears to have worked well as the team was a mixture.

Scum like this shouldn't be given the chance to lace up a pair of football boots.

Good luck and best wishes to the referee and to the trash moron who did this, 'what goes around, comes around' pal!!!

Our league chairman and refs sec asked me to post the following.

All, thanks for your concerns for Richard. I can confirm the events took place and is now a matter for the police. The team involved were suspended with immediate effect and have since resigned from our league. It was made clear they were not welcome and a sensible choice was made. We do not and will not tolerate this in our league. Kind regards John Catley Chairman CMSFL

Great outcome. They just need to catch the guy now and lock him up.
