Slough 2-1 Hungerford

A Rebel and a Saint

Recommended Posts

Good win today, Slough took the lead thanks to some dubious keeping and defending early on but had Sonner sent off (probably a bit harsh) just before half time. Second half we absorbed the pressure while creating quite a bit on the break before scoring with Swift's long range shot near the end of the game, before Hungerford went up the other end and scored in injury time.

I was very impressed with the way we battled today. Deeney, Swift, Burnell and Smith did an excellent job of creating the chances on the break, holding up the ball and pressurising the defence. MOTM for me was Burnell who beat a lot of defenders to the high ball and helped to create a lot of good play for us with ten men.

Should also add that Hungerford spent a lot of time in and around our box but seemed to do very little with it/we defended quite well at times.

Warrington, Fraser, Rhone, Brown, Bowden-Haase, D Deeney, Sonner, Burgess, Burnell, Smith, Swift. Subs Vassell (for Burnell), Abbey, Perkins, A Deeney (for Burgess), Grant.

COYR!!

Was impressed with our resilience today, especially defending quite deep and a man down in the second half. Thought Sonner's red card was perhaps harsh. He'd already taken the ball when the Hungerford player got there. Some refs give them as yellow and some red but if the referee was going to adopt the hard line I've no idea how their number 3 stayed on in the second half after thundering into a challenge with a leading elbow. Ironic considering how he was moaning at the officials all of the first half about Sonner jumping with his arms.

Great goal from Swift to seal it and I agree with ARaaS that Burnell worked his backside off. Good to see him shoot from distance for a change too! Good bit of prize money.

yes the next round is on the 29th Sep unless Beaconsfield win there replay ( we're both at home in the next round) or they lose and rearrange a league game for that date. Then it'll be Friday or Sunday against Gosport

The 6th Oct will be Biggleswade away unless we win next week in the FA cup then it'll be the next round of that. Then that'll be on the Friday or Sunday if drawn at home, because Beaconsfield are at home in the League.

Confused I yet I am

Terrific battling performance from the team.

Second half, even with 10 men I thought we created much the better of the chances to put the game out of sight.

Any one of 11 could of been named MOTM but my vote goes to Dave Deeney who I thought came back with a bang today, ran his socks off, created chances and got a vital toe to the ball to break up play on a number of occasions.

Not sure on Sean Sonners sending off.

Sort of challenge and reaction from a player that makes it look worse than it really is but I would say most Refs would have probably given a red.

Heard a rumour that Ed Smith wants to stay with us, which if true, will be excellent news as I think he will score a lot goals for us and would make it a real battle with Danny Burnell for top scorer.

I thought we played better with 10 men than we did with 11.Danny Burnell was my MOM but I thought all the players with the exception of Sean Sonner deserved praise for their battling performances and gutsy displays.

Have to disagree with the view that Sean Sonner's sending off was harsh,as I was right near the incident and it appeared a cowardly and totally needless, wreckless challenge, whereby he followed through with his boot in on the player after his initial first tackle.Pretty despicable and deserved to get his marching orders.

I agree with you this time Marcus, Danny outstanding today. And Sonner the sinner yellow for me as well. But now a days you go to ground it's red.

When you've got some people want Ben and Danny in and Sean out to bring in a tall striker opinions are going to be totally different

Opinions will be different because as supporters most of us are blinkered in our opinions. If an oppo had done it one of our players we would have been screaming for a red.

It's pretty simple, if you lunge in from distance these days you won't even have to make contact to get a red, Refs also look at the 'intent' of the tackle as well as any contact made.

Best team performance I have seen from us so far this season. As regards the sending off, apparently someone nearer than me said it was a two-footed tackle, which unfortunately these

days is a sending off. However, saying that it cant of hurt their guy that much as Sean was already on the ground when he made the tackle. I think the fact that their guy screamed like

he had been picked off by a sniper influenced the ref. Good win and MOM for me was Danny B.

Good stuff yesterday, a real spirited team performance against a Hungerford side that were very impressive in possession. I feared the worst when we went down to ten men, but second half we looked very well organised and Batemen got the team tactics spot on. A couple of great saves from Warro, all three midfielders put in a great shift and Danny Burnell was a real handful all afternoon and was very unlucky not to get a goal.

Hope we can keep hold of Ed Smith.

It has nothing to do with who you favour up front,Epic Rebel,in regards to the Sean Sonner incident. Most supporters like to see fair play and know the difference between an honest, hard tackle and a malicious, dangerous one. Even though, the Hungerford player wasn't hurt and made a meal of it,I'm afraid Sean Sonner's tackle was blatantly dirty and deserved the red card.End of.

One Question 3spirit

Not once have you mentioned anything about the Hungerford number 3's elbow to the face and why that isn't cowardly ect.

Sean got the ball first and the follow through got the player and as I SAID now a days if you go to ground it's red. So out of the 2 which one do you think was the worse.

the one that got the ball and the one that didn't.

What I'm trying to say is which way you like or dislike a player influences the way you react to what happens, say if it was Steve Perkins that was sent off your thought on the matter might have been different.

If Steve Perkins did a tackle like that, then he should be given the red card, too.I didn't see any elbow by the Hungerford 3.I do think the player Sean Sonner fouled should have been yellow carded for feigning injury and so should Bobby Wikinson, the Hungerford manager for his over the top protestations to the referee but that doesn't absolve Sean Sonner for his unsporting behaviour.

Their number 3 was guilty of what I'd call a forearm smash during the second half close to the stand at the side. I don't recall the Rebels player on the receiving end but it was a terrible challenge.......and from a player who spent much of the first half moaning at anyone who'd listen about Sean jumping with his arms up.

I'm on about the way you described the tackle ( and it appeared a cowardly and totally needless, wreckless challenge, whereby he followed through with his boot in on the player after his initial first tackle.Pretty despicable ) . The slough player who got elbowed was down for about 5 mins I'm surprised you missed that.

Was it the one when Dominic Rhone got done? I don't condone any malicious play from any players. However, football is a contact sport and sometimes the areas are blurred in what is deemed fair or unfair.

I do believe that it is hard to make a rational comment on any incident unless you're standing right in front of it,which I happened to be with the Sean Sonner incident. So you can see why the referee needs to keep up with play.Making judgements are always hard to call.

Sean's game is based on chasing down players and making tackles but it's no co-incidence that he gets his fair share of bookings for these nasty offensive type of tackles.Reminds me of Christian Metcalfe, another small player who thought it big to leave his boot in with studs up at times.

Give me a Darren Wilkerson,Terry Angus or a Steve Thompson type of player any day of the week, to these so-called 'footballers' as they could tackle hard but not resort to mindless thuggery unless under extreme provocation. I don't mind a player retaliating if a player has been dirty to them,in the spur of the moment, heat of the battle way but not when the opposing player is not doing anything untoward.

I'm afraid Sean IMO thinks he's a hard case and that he is clever with his bad tackles.I think he hasn't reached maturity!! and that many Slough fans are biased in their adoration for him and turn a blind eye to his shinangans.

This fan isn't.
