Margaret Thatcher's taste for deregulation lead to high street banks taking over merchant banks - that's working out really well for the UK at the moment.

As much as I dislike Thatcher, the T Shirts were in poor taste.

Union power was out of control at one point, especially with the likes of closed shop policy (especially with the print unions) so I will grudingly give her that one positive. There is a place for unions in society but their power did get excessive.

Disagree about the closed shop Simon. I once worked with a couple of guys who who expected all the benefits negotiated by the unions and gained by the sacrifices of their fellow workers, probably because they was looking for a big pay off for being "victimised".

I'm not against Unions per se Alan, I think all of us can thank Unions for some of the working conditions that we have today.

However... Closed shops. I remember from my school days (showing my age here) talking to another kid about what we were going to do when we grew up - I'm going to work in the print industry, my dad will get me in was his reply.

The closed shop system from my recollection with regards to printing (please correct me if I'm wrong) meant that you couldn't join a company without being part of a Union and you couldn't join the Union without a referral - so you could argue that the best people didn't get the job as a result (I know that happens in management as well).

I always believed there was a lack of communication between Unions (who were trying to get as much money for their representatives as possible regardless of the cost to the company/Government) and Management (who were trying to keep costs as low as possible regardless of the needs of their workers) was the problem. I believe that some Japanese companies elected a union representative to their board and that seemed to work well for them.

Were some Unions unrealistic in their demands in the light of global competition, I believe that some of them were.

the idea of unions is great, but the problem is they are for the most part nowadays run by champagne socialists who only really care about their own political means and being as hard line as possible to get their name in bright lights,a certain Bob springs to mind

I have to say I have never heard of anyone needing a referral to join a union, although to be fair my knowledge of the print industry is pretty scant so you may well be correct. Most of the companies I worked for insisted on a closed shop policy without any undue pressure from unions because collective bargaining was easier and more efficient, and they considered having a properly trained workforce that embraced camaraderie and had a high morale was a useful tool for high productivity, and safety. In those days getting a decent job did often mean being closely related to existing employees, and somehow it was a system that worked OK enough, and even though it might not be right, I would imagine it still goes on to this day.

As much as I'm NOT a Thatcherite, AND I am a trade-unionist, I find these 'T' Shirts sick beyond belief.

Incidently, I'm NOT a Labour supporter either, so their so called 'Leader', should be ashamed of himself for associating with them.
