Hotspur why the need to criticse a fellow supporter? No need

There was plenty to criticise on the pitch in that second half display. First half we were coasting and comfortable. One mistake by warro nearly gifted them a goal but a mistake by their keeper saw us go in two ahead.

Second half we barely got going. Conceded early and were torn apart repeatedly. Could have been five.

Seemed to lack shape and ideas. For me the side isn't as good as last year. The turning point for us last year was the loss of Martin and seeby and we just haven't been able to replace them. They gave coyne the freedom to play and we are also sorely missing his creativity.

Two positives burnell took his goal well and smith was lively

4 points from 4 games = 1 point a game = 42 points for the season = relegation area.

As I am no longer allowed to express a personal opinion on this forum I thought I would stick to the facts.

It is not only the chairman who puts his hand in his pocket to pay players wages to pick up only 4 points from 12 it is the fans through buying shirts, and other products from the shop, supporting the barmy army who sponsor games, and paying at the turnstile to wacht games - fact.

There has been reduction in the sales of season tickets this year - fact.

Steve Bateman has failed to manage a side to gain promotion in the last 3 seasons - fact.

The above two facts may be related - Maybe the chairman should consider this.

Someone on here said we have the best defence in the league, shows you their knowledge of the game.

Hotspur. Are you referencing my post from the SYCOB game? As you will clearly see I have said that I believe (and still do despite todays defeat) that we have the best 3 centre backs in this league. My mind is not changed over one game. It's based on watching them over 50 odd league and cup games last season against similar opposition.

It does not say anywhere that I said I believe we have the best defence in the league, unless you are rererencing another users post?

I have to admit that the striking partnership is probably the least of our current worries as the defence, which was very good last season, suffered today, and our midfield, in the second half, went absent.

Interesting to listen to the bench today, repeatedly telling players to keep it on the ground. The reptetition was necessary as the message didn't seem to be received/understood by some players.

I agree that the team seems nowhere near as good as last season.

First half we were in control and moved the ball well. Second half they were up for it more than we were and we looked sluggish and like we'd already won the game. They deserved to win and it could have been but a far higher margin as well with one shot that hit the bar and Warro making several good saves.

Edited to add that after four games we are 14th in the table. People will say it's early days.......but we are already eight points behind three teams.

Good solid first half and 2 well taken goals. Probably our best first half performance so far.

Second half we conceeded a sloppy early goal with some indecision from Warro.

Uxbridge then proceeded to take control of the midfield and put our defence under a lot of pressure.

The second goal from Uxbridge was unbelievable poor play from somewhere near the right hand corner of our defence where an Uxbridge player was marked and going nowhere only for him to wriggle clear on the by-line and play a square ball across the area to set up an easy tap in.

No idea about the 3rd goal only that we were looking a bit ragged and it all looked far too easy and looked only a matter of time before they scored the winner.

I really don't think our defence is the problem, IMO opinion it's the midfield.

So stating the obvious, there a lots of things a good midfield should be, Mobile (be quick and be able to cover a lot of ground), creative (set up chances for the forwards), skillful and a player with a physical presence who is a leader when the going gets tough.

We do have skillful players in midfield like Dave Deeney and Ollie Burgess but I'm afraid very little of the other attributes required in a good midfield.

Until we sort this out I'm afraid were going nowhere fast.

Coyne certainly provided the mobility, covered a lot of ground, always wanted and demanded the ball. Yes, he had his faults, gave the ball away sometimes with far too many cute flicks with the outside of his boot when a simple control and pass would have sufficed, got booked far too often for being a motormouth and couldn't tackle a good dinner but he was a leader in midfield.

Adam Martin, once he was fit was the solid midfielder who could put a tackle in and at the same time could score and create.

Chris Seeby was the bit of class, a powerful runner who could put his foot on the ball and lay off the perfect pass.

In pre-season, with the losses we had it was the opinion of most supporters that the biggest re-vamp needed was in midfield and SB stated that the biggest changes he was looking to make were going to be in the midfield area but the only real change has been the signing of Dave Deeney.

As CR says, with three quality midfield players having left and only one signed I think speaks volumes.

I also think we are missing Steve Sinclair, ok he wasn't his usual self last season but he is still a class act!

I pray to God that new signings are made this week I really do, since we lost Martin and Seeby earlier this year, our play has gone downhill, Coyne was too heavily relied upon when they left, now he is gone we are even weaker, Coyne carried us towards the back end of last season but without Martin and/or Seeby alongside him it was too much for him!

Dave Deeney was touted to be the midfield enforcer with more to his game, not my words but he is no Adam Martin, maybe he is trying to do too much, so my question is where are the replacements for Coyne and Seeby, simple, they haven't been signed!

I hope I'm proved wrong but I think Steve Bateman may have taken this current crop of players as far as he can, I know this may cause uproar on here but it's my honest opinion!

Stating the obvious but played ok first half and dominated without breaking a sweat. 2nd half totally dominated one shot from us on target and when they scored their first 1 min into second half we always looked like capitulating. Thought all 3 strikers looked good today and I hope bennis is ok as it looked nasty. Don't want to ref blame but the foul on burnell was hideous and was a blatant red card! Terrible decision.

To be fair to Steve Bateman, Chris Seeby only played 9 games last season between months Dec and Jan [ 2 of those as sub, only 1 coming on] as he went travelling at the start of the season. Then after his Slough appearances,he signed for St Albans.

I always thought he was a better defender than he was a midfield player but there's no doubting his quality.

Paul Coyne was always going to be a hard one to replace,as we placed our whole strategy around his play. Now we're having to start again.Dave Deeney is no Paul Coyne but he does offer us a different style.I think we're asking him to be our saviour in the Coyne mould, when it isn't his game.I believe some of the midfield players we have at the club would be more than adequate,if we played them to their attributes and not ask them to do things that don't suit them.

Here lies a Steve Bateman self-made problem.

I also think that Ashley Deeney, when playing as a right wing back,is good going forward but isn't so good at defending. Thus leaving a slow Alex Brown to pick up the pieces.Had we had Simon Sweeney, this wouldn't have been such a problem.

On the left you have Woozley covering Murphy.Dave Wooz is far more mobile than Alex and Danny is a better defender than Ashley. So I think you can see where one of our defensive holes is.

I'm surprised we haven't gone with a straight 4-4-2 as we can double up on the flanks and make our players know their defined role thus putting the onus on them doing the job properly. At the moment, too many of our new acquisitions haven't a clue what their role is.That's why we need to go back to basics. Woodford would be an ideal game for it.

The other very big problem we currently have is that many of players are too samey.Hence why we are missing Steve Sinclair,Jerome Anderson and to a lesser extent but a useful sub,Chris Herron. All players that can offer trickery, can go past an opposition player and get a cross in on the right hand side.Ollie Burgess and Leigh Mason are our options but we keep playing them central.Which invites pressure,as neither are good tacklers or fast in centre midfield. They have to play in a centre midfield three as neither would be up to the rigours of two in centre mid unless you play a diamond shape or a holding midfielder with them.

My team for Woodford would be

Warrington

A.Deeney NBH Woozley Murphy

Burgess D.Deeney[holding midfielder] Logie Rhone

Burnell Smith

Subs: Brown,Perkins[to play D.Deeney role],Swift, Fraser or Bateman,Sonner.

Honestly, if we don't sign new players in midfield we will struggle to make the play offs, mark my words!

I can understand the points on here about perservering with what we have but the truth is they are not at the level of Coyne, Martin, Seeby or Sinclair so if we do perservere, we'll be so far off the leading pack by the end of October I predict play off defeat yet again, if we make the play offs that is!

I think it's down to confidence at the moment, yes they were the better side in the second half.

We did have some good chances in the second half aswell, disallowed goal, Danny's chance just passed the post. there was a few others I've seen on Gary's photo's.

So not all doom and gloom, 2 good wins in the next 2 games I think will change everything.

THINKING POSITIVE coyr
