Away shirt - a different slant on the debate

Recommended Posts

I have heard that some fans are publicly moaning about the away shirt, and whilst I accept that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I would like to make the following observation

I admit to be an old traditionalist myself, and a bit of a luddite....if it was down to me for example, coloured boots would be banned and nothing racier than three white stripes (a la Franz Beckenbaur) would be allowed, but times change and market forces dictate that players ponce about in orange and green monstrosities, and I will just have to lump it.

Furthermore, as a result of being an old duffer schooled on the coolest kit of all time, namely Chelsea circa 1970, I cannot abide Chelsea new home kit...GOLD STRIPES??....What the f...?..but again, market forces and christmas presents dictate the trend........and whilst I can moan to my hearts content about Chelseas kit, the club couldn't give a flying stuff about my opinion, because I am merely one lone voice among a see of hundreds of thousands of Johnny come lately punters, who are only too keen to part with their hard earned dosh and shell out on whatever diabolical attire the club comes up with each season. The club have even stopped the attempt at placating poverty ridden parents by only changing the home and away kits on alternate seasons..this year they have changed ALL THREE KITS (yes that's right..THREE, apparently we need a home kit, an away kit and a third kit now, for reasons that completely escape me!!)..and that's not to mention the two choices of goal keeper kits available too.

But, and here's the rub, it is different at Slough.....if one moans aloud at Slough, it has an effect, because as opposed to hundreds of thousands, we number but mere hundreds...and it can only have a detremental effect on the club.

Ok I'm biased because my darling sister runs the shop and I consider myself a long term friend of our Chairman, but I honeslty, would say the same if this were not the case.

Negative vibes can spread like wildfire in a small community, and they knock peoples confidence, and given our circumstances the last ting we need is to be spreading doom and gloom about the place.

So if you don't like the kit, simply don't buy the shirt and shout at the dog when you get home.

Personally I quite like the away shirt, and I would urge the club to wear the away shirt at ALL away games when possible, rather than just when our home colours clash, as I think would enhance it's acceptance by the fans, and also placate those that, somewhat justifiably, compalin if they invest in an away shirt only to see it worn two or three times a season.

So ultimately chaps, like the shirt, or don't like the shirt, that's yopur choice, and as others have rightly pointed out, it is impossible to pick colours that would please everyone, but don't knock the club, and therefore the people involved, for picking it in the first place. It's a hard enough job, for the people involved, in keeping ouir club afloat, and it does nothing to strenghten their resolve if all they hear is moaning and groaning from the fans about the choice of colours of a shirt.

Here endeth the lesson

UP THE REBELS!

Nigel, I think the above could apply to many of the threads/comments on this forum.

Often if im pissed off i just don't post as i know the bigger picture is that lots of people work their socks off to get this club where it should be. In any case i can rant and rave in the programme!

I do think it would be a great idea to have a fans forum with club officials every so often to discuss ideas, thrash out any niggly problems, maybe even vote on the away shirt etc.

I quite agree chaps. It is very easy to have a moan a lot harder to devote time, energy and money to the cause.

I actually think the Chelsea kit situation is even worse than you make out as I think there are separate kits available for the Champions League now too - although they do have the added bonus of that new star on it.

I think the green kit isn't too bad, I've purchased one and I look forward to wearing it Saturday for the chants of Green Army as e take on Uxbridge.

i don't like it! And Sue knows I don't like it!! Although to be fair I saw it being worn on Saturday and it looks better on than hanging in the shop. That said it's far better than that horrid red/blue thing!!!

No you cannot satisfy everyone all the time, especially miserable old buggers like me, but perhaps it should go to a poll and people can vote on maybe 2 or 3 choices? That way you would at least be satisfying the majority, if not all. perhaps the green shirt would have come out on top in a poll? Who knows?

I have no objection to the Green shirt - it is a good choice and a good design that stands out.

I am however concerned that Slough Town will only be wearing their main Amber and Blue kit for only half the season.

With the club trying to promote its image in the town are we then not confusing people by varying the kit so much?

Will the club web site change its background from amber and blue to green on the weeks we are playing away?

I personally think that the Amber and Blue kit is THE Slough Town kit and it is a mistake to use the green kit for all away games, it should only be used as a change kit.

Even if it's the same sponsor they have paid for 2 sponsorships and want there money's worth from both kits.

How does that work?! If they've sponsored both kits they get their name on the shirt for every game, irrespective of what shirt we wear for away games!

Lakes paid X amount for amber kit. Then pay extra for green kit. If it's not going to get used then the green kit (or any other colour) sponsorship will never be filled.

B & C

So what have the fans got to lump. The club has to have an away kit and getting it sponsored is the best way to get one. The fan can buy the shirt or not down to them.

Am I being dim?? They aren't paying money for us to wear green. They are paying money for their name to be seen on our shirts when we play. Irrespective of whether the Lakes logo is on an amber or green shirt, it's still the Lakes logo. And anyway, the green kit IS going to get used, every time we play away against a team who doesn't wear green! It's our away kit, not our change kit.

RIGHT

Lakes sponsor amber shirt say £50, then Lakes sponsor green kit say another £50 use kit for all away games ( there is less teams in green than yellow).

Don't use new kit then club looses £50 and no new away kit then the old red one is used and free sponsorship for the one that already on it

If you had a different sponsor for the away kit I could see the argument for them wanting to get as much exposure of that kit, but I am with Ian on this one as Lakes get 100% exposure which ever kit is worn, but the fans only get to see their team play in the clubs traditional colours half the time and the rest of the time in an alien colour.

B&C

The club needed an away kit, because the sponsor on the red kit was no more.

Lakes stepped up ( thanks to them ), we got an away kit for NOTHING.

Then so the supporter doesn't only see it twice a season and to justify the away support buying it it's being worn at all away games.

The big thing last season was that the away kit wasn't used so why buy it was the cry, now your saying the opposite

ALSO your thing about traditional kit NO club only wears 1 kit all clubs have to have 2.

I don't see why there is an argument about the kit not being used...we haven't had an away game yet so how do we know its not going to be used!!

I'm with Ian, lakes would be aware of how the club uses the shirts from previous sponsorship of our away kit so are probably just happy to have their name on the kit at every game regardless of which kit we use.
