What follows is taken from Law 14 - The Penalty Kick

 

Infringements/Sanctions

 

A team-mate of the player taking the kick enters the penalty area or moves in front of or within 9.5 m (10 yds) of the penalty mark:

the referee allows the kick to proceed

if the ball enters the goal, the kick is retaken

if the ball does not enter the goal, the kick is not retaken

A team-mate of the goalkeeper enters the penalty area or moves in front of or within 9.15 m (10 yds) of the penalty mark:

the referee allows the kick to proceed

if the ball enters the goal, a goal is awarded

if the ball does not enter the goal, the kick is retaken

A player of both the defending team and the attacking team infringe the Laws of the Game:

the kick is retaken

 

I don't see it saying anywhere award the defending team a free kick. But then I don't think it is particualrly clear what happens if there is encroachment and the rbound is scored.

 

Curious. I guess we will never know.

how did I know that you were going to find that out. I think that the disallowed goal gave the team a shot up the ar$e, but as to what the ref was thinking, here's a hint...

THe rule there says if the ball does not go into the net then the penalty is not retaken, and given that it was saved I guess the match has to restart somehow and that is usually via a free kick.

The only thing that I can think of, is that being as though the keeper saved the kick and the encroaching player scored the rebound, the penalty taking side somehow has to be penalised, resulting in his free kick to the pub side we played last night.

and the other thing, if it was Haddow who was encroaching, why wasn't the free kick taken from the side of the area he was on? The position it was taken from indicated that it was someone on Spencers left, when Haddow ran in from his right...
