AFC Dunstable and Dunstable Town

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have just signed up to this site simply to find out more about the two Dunstable clubs.

I'm into non league football and follow a side in the Ryman Premier but was recently checking out the league tables of lower leagues and was very surprised to find two clubs from Dunstable in the same division.

I remember Town were in the Southern League a few years ago but obviously got relegated and having done a bit of reading on AFC am aware that they have climbed the leagues in recent years and have very few fans as I read the match report from the Redbridge game which mentioned there were only 40 odd fans I believe.

Are Town the principle/main club in the town? Are AFC seen as a small club pushing above their weight? Do the two clubs dislike each other? Which of the two clubs are more likely to climb the leagues? Do they play in the same stadium? Are the majority of local people of Dunstable not bothered about either club and prefer to spend their time up the road at that bottle job club? (sorry, as a Watford fan I'm not too keen on them).

Sorry for all the questions but I'm just interested in the situation.

This seems ominously like a rhodes wind up but will give u the benefit of the doubt! Speaking from an afc perspective I will only give you the positives. Yes we ground share a great facility, and yes there is intense rivalry naturally being in the same league. Afc are indeed the new kids on the block at this level but have by far the bigger infrastructure, running with over thirty teams at all ages. Afc run there team for the first time this year with a small budget and have always gone for the best local players. Dunstable have a far larger budget and consequently can spread there net much wider. Both team players committee and management have ambition to play at a higher level, the relationship has been professional and acceptable although events leading up to this season have put a damperner on this to a certain degree. Thanks for your interest, hope this helps answer some of your questions. Afc 1st team gaffer.

Thanks for your replies. It seems like there's a good set up at AFC then. Best of luck to them in the future. Good to see a community club doing well. I think it's a strange situation though having two senior teams in a small town. I hope it's sustainable. I suppose another similar example I can think of is Abingdon United and Abingdon Town although United are in a higher division. When I first saw the team name AFC Dunstable a few days ago my initial thought was that Dunstable Town had folded and been renamed AFC Dunstable but when I saw Dunstable Town were in the same division I was very surprised hence my questions.

Having watched both teams this season afc are indeed a good side with top people behind them but Town, not surprisingly with their budget, are a class above. In first team football only...I acknowledge the structure and commitment of Afc and it's staff.

In my opinion they will win the prem this year comfortably and be strong the season after too.

Probably a realistic and fare assessment Fat Al, and it probably suits us to continue to be the underdogs with lower expectation of winning trophy's. That way our slap head of a chairman stays off my back and i get to stay in the job for another year!

PS If you knew our management team and players then you will also know we will be doing everything possible to over achieve, so keep an eye on us Fat Al, you might be surprised!

Do Town have any plans to run reserve and youth sides? I expect if they wish to progress they will have too. I wonder if their long term aim is to go SL Prem or Blue sq south I imagine their ambitions must lie beyond making up numbers in SL 1

Blue Square South? I would have thought they would be more likely to end up in the Blue Square North these days. As ridiculous as it is. Anyway a lot of work to do before that becomes a reality.

Your right there. When did Oxford, Gloucester and Bishop Stortford become North. Crazy

Does seem a bit mad. Personally I think Conf should be regionalised and league merge league 1&2 and regionalise that have league 1 north and south less travel lower costs more local derbies higher income. Simples.

How would that change anything for the likes of Stortford, Oxford and Gloucester? Still have to split the country up North and South, so still have the same problem.

I wasn't suggesting it would. Just saying that actually there should be more regionalisation doesn't change the fact that it's crazy for likes of Ox and Gloucester.
