Cookie
I couldn't believe it when I visited there just now despite nearly gettng blown away. Me that is not the Gallery. Mind you it wont be long before that occurs with winds like todays.Wanted to see if there was any improvement & I had nothing better to do to be honest! In the end I realised ANYTHING would have been better to do than go there. Downstairs:.The "Kiss" statue & a large old painting of Margate Harbour. Thats it! Upstairs: Loads of scribble by Tracy Emin and that lying down pose she used in lights. No other art or so called art to be seen. Honestly your kids could do that scribble. She gets paid for that crap too. Amongst that scribble is smore scribble of x rated sketches that Adults should be warned of. No way could you take kids in there, yet there are kids in the room next door in a classroom. They shouldn't be anywhere near those sketches even if they in the adjacent room.Thens there's a few people in the Cafeteria. This is no joke or word of a lie. Its total Pants. Absolutely unbelievable. If you have literally 5 minutes to spare (thats all it takes), take a look for yourself. Better still DONT BOTHER! It really is a waste of a building and money! Its even WORSE than when it was opened.(could it have got worse?)...seems it has! DIABOLICAL!
Pagey
been there a couple of times not overly impressed but there again art isnt my kind of thing But it is bringing people to the area and the old town is looking much better and anything that does that is fine by me
dflman
I agree about the success in bringing people into the town hopefully spending a few bob which I think they surely must do but do not quite understand the waste of money bit - whose money exactly ? Keep hearing that phrase from people who appear to be anti the gallery but when I try to check who funded it all can see is that TDC provided the land and the cash came from the arts etc etc and their motives for the project must be honourable whether you like the project or not. I understand that there is the issue of the money TDC spent on the original "Building rising from the Water" project that is subject to legal matters but don't think the current incumbents of the building are involved in that. I actually like Rodin's statue and the way it is displayed against the sea backdrop, particularly when the sun is setting, is effective for me and often pop in just to have a look at it without bothering with the current other display which will change for something else in due course anyway. I am also aware that it is one of a number that were cast but that often occurs with statuary and paintings.
marksandwell
But surely Margate is more than the Old Town..Walk up the high street, or shops around Peacocks, this can't be good...

Also impressed that people in the cafe have to look at a concrete wall; been far better to have had the cafe facing the sea..........Oh and how about the car park that can't be used because of the Lifeboat

Frankie100
Alright counted to 10 before writing anything about the Turner Centre. 1. Two acres of land were given by TDC (without public consultation on the disposal of assets) to KCC to build the art centre and car park. 2. Centre and car park take up one acre of land and KCC now own additional acre to do as they please........well done TDC for doing the complete opposite of what you tell the rest of us. 3. Total cost of £17.5 million underwritten by KCC ratepayers,,,,,so not just you and me in Margate but ratepayers of Tunbridge Wells/Maidstone/Canterbury etc 4. Nearly all other funding has come from Arts Council (paid for by Income Tax) and the EU (paid for by Income Tax and any other British money those thieving bastards in Brussels can get off us) 5. During the Olympic Torch relay Tracey Emin declared she was so happy to be in front of HER Turner Centre........then she should paid for the bloody thing!!!! 6. All monies spent on the failed design of the shark fin in the sea were lost by KCC (ratepayers money) 7. The annual running costs of £2 million are paid for by KCC So in answer to your question Cookie........................WE are paying for it

marksandwell
Quotes from J. M. W. Turner himself: Painting is a strange business. (J. M. W. Turner) There's a sketch at every turn. (J. M. W. Turner)

Boney Crisp
If you think the Turner Centre is bad then go to the Tate Modern. I've been there and hated it as much as the first time. There is a piece there which is just a a steel frame for a cot, nothing added, nothing taken away, but because there is a description of what it is meant to represent it all of a sudden becomes art. What is the World of art coming to? Da Vinci must be turning in his grave
JohnKirby
When people knock the plans for the football stadium, you'll have a go at them, so if the art gallery isn't for you, why knock it, can't you just accept its good for people who enjoy modern art? And, Emin doesn't get paid to make art, people buy artwork from her, there is a VERY big difference. Some of the exhibition is very clever, and not many small towns on the planet will get the opportunity to see Rodin's Kiss, you're a very lucky town. Above all else, it brings people to the area, it is a key part of the regeneration of Margate, and its not going to go away anytime soon. So cheer up, embrace it, or just ignore it, but it doesn't do anyone any good just writing negatively about it. It makes you no better than the 'save hartsdown park' campaign, which is just against the club, and football, rather than an effort to save parkland. Coffin Ender
It is funny though how in a time of cutbacks a seemingly bottomless pit of public money can be found for this (did someone earlier in this thread mention running costs of £2m a year?) In the Hastings programme someone was talking about how that town's own gallery, Jerwood, gets lots of funding while publicly-owned sports facilities there are left to rot. There's a saying...'politics is showbusiness for ugly people' and you can see why councillors love art projects. It means they get their mug in posh people's papers like the Guardian and the chance to hang around with celebs like Stephen Fry when they come to town. Non-league football just doesn't have the same cachet.
Frankie100
Main complaint Turner Centre is public funded, (I have no choice where my money went) the football ground is privately funded (any money I put into the club is my choice)
I am Spartacus
Well I enjoy Art (cannot say I understand it all though) and if all I saw when I went to the Turner was 'The Kiss' I do not care as it is a terrific bit of sculpture. Personnaly speaking I spent nearlly an hour just looking at it and enjoying it. I must also admit that I enjoy visiting Madrid just to go to the Art Galleries and Museums. Just learn to open your eyes and look at and admire all forms of Art for what they are.
