Any Car That You Like (Except The One That Does 200mph)

Recommended Posts

I've just read an article on Yahoo! about Sir Alex Ferguson barring any of his U23 players from getting a free Chevrolet Sports Car (as Chevrolet are sponsoring Manchester United).

Sir Alex has said that his players can pick any other Chevrolet car to drive, which seems pretty sensible, but some poster named 'David B' has taken exception to what Sir Alex has done:

'Who the hell does Ferguson think he is? If I was one of the U23's I'd tell him where to shove those orders. We have lads younger than this fighting and dying in Afghanistan. If they are old enough to die for their country they are old enough to make their own decisions about which car to drive. About time this bloated, arrogant piece of garbage left football totally.'

]I just hope that this David B is on a wind-up, and not at all serious.

I can see Davids point.

Then again, too many players at top clubs today are overpayed and underworked.

No problem with them owning a high performance car, providing they are sensible and intelligent enough to drive one !! Trouble is, a lot of 'em A'INT !

I think this is really interesting. Kind of a more Societal Management of these - sometimes - immature lads. Reminds me of reading how George Best was managed during his early years at the club although I think we can safely say it had no lasting influence.

When George Best was nearing the end of his playing career, he joined Fulham.

Fulham Chairman at the time was Ernie Clay, who lived just outside Dorking. (I knew his son well).

Mr Clay, as part of the deal, bought Mr Best an 'E' Type Jag from F.W. Mays in South Street, Dorking.

G.B. promptly wrote it off !

Proves a point, though !

Yes, now you've said that I remember it. George Best arriving here from NI was placed in a family that "homed" a couple of players, he trained a bit, played football a bit and snooker quite a lot but his "allowance" kept him firmly in check. Shame someone didn't do that for him all his life really.
