Team v Beaconsfield

Extremely poor so far! Their goal came after we were slaughtered down the right by their no.11 who has more pace than Burnell & Sonner combined!

In contrast, we haven't managed a meaningful effort on goal as of yet! Simply not good enough.

Finished 1-1 NOT GOOD ENOUGH against 10 men!

That is now only 4 points from 9, 1 win, 1 draw, 1 lost, and on that form over the season we will get 56 points - has any team ever won the league with 56 points?

Time for some serious thinking Mr Bateman! or you will need to get your CV up to date.

out of nowhere we back to 1-1 and up against 10 men and yet not sure we created a chance after that

really worried about how nervous and rushed our general passing is

yet again we struggled against a team that didn't have to do a great deal to stop us as yet again we were stopping ourselves by just time and again giving the ball away

I usually try and stay as positive as I can after games, but that was dire today. The highlight for me today was watching Jeremy Kyle in the SYCOB Bar at half-time!

We were so, so narrow today. We had Ollie and Swifty, who in my opinion are far better as central midfielders, and probably both think of themselves as such came inside a lot when they got the ball, which made the team ever so narrow. I don't blame them - I just don't think they are natural wide players for us - they are both central midfielders imo.

Therefore there was a major lack of width which meant a long-punt up to Danny and Sean from the back, which was easily dealt with by someone of Nevin Saroya's experience. Then when they go down to 10 men we narrow it even more by putting Ben Abbey on!

For me it was crying out for someone like Ash Deeney to come on (was he injured?) and hug that wide touchline as when playing 10 men you should make the pitch as big as possible. I think he would have linked up well with Fraser, who I thought was our best player today.

I've no worries about our goalkeeper and our 3 centre backs - easily the best in the league in my opinion, but in midfield looking at our options it's all too similar for me. Nobody with pace and trickery to take on a player in midfield and hugely missing the creative influence of Coyne. They are all good players in midfield, but they are all the same type of player imo.

And still a targetman needed I believe, which I don't agree with the fact there is not one out there as we've pretty much needed one for about 4 seasons now in my opinion - surely there has been time to find one in that timeframe?

OK, I concede, we need a big tall striker because we sure as hell can't provide anything resembling quality to to Burnell and Sonner. Even when we did put them under a bit of pressure how many crosses were hoiked from deep into the box and over-hit so they just drifted out? Even during the second half when we were against ten men Sean and Danny were 5 yards inside their own half picking the ball up. Where was the midfield??

If these types of display are going to continue, we may as well put Fowler in alongside Woozley and put NBH up front!

So next game I would go in with:

Grant

A.Deeney Fowler Woozley Murphy

Fraser Logie Burgess Rhone

NBH Abbey

May seem harsh on Sonner and Burnell but Abbey would be better suited alongside NBH!

At the moment, I do not think that this current squad is strong enough and is seriously missing the midfield class of Adam Martin and Paul Coyne, and the trickery and guile of Steve Sinclair, we have not replaced those 3 players with players that are as good if not better than them! I'm not saying the players we've got aren't good enough, they just need help and any team would miss the 3 players mentioned above!

I'm still not sure what to make of Dave Deeney, he seems to coast through games without stamping any kind of authority, if he is carrying a groin strain, he should be rested until fully fit!

Today I feel showed up some serious weaknesses in the team. with a manager as experienced as Steve Bateman, I am surprised these haven't been spotted earlier.

The first and foremost was our total lack of pace all over the pitch. Whenever we got the ball upfield to the midfield, it took them time to trap the ball and to get it in the direction they wanted it. the then had to decide what to do with it. By the time all this has been done, 1.5/2 seconds at least have elapsed, giving Beaconsfield valuable time to regroup and reorganise. The result was that we never got anywhere.

The second point is the totally ineffectual "partnership" of Burnell and Sonner. On another thread yesterday, I said that individually they are very good players, but don't work together as a partnership. Today was a prime example of it not working. A well organised defence never let either of them get a look in all game. The result was that we resorted to aimless long balls upfield (easily dealt with by the defence) and shoddy crosses into the box, with neither Burnell nor Sonner anywhere near them. (Burnell is a poacher, not a hard-worker. I do not feel that a poacher is what the teams really needs right now!)

Which leads me onto the third point. Beaconsfield's goal today came from a player with pace and the ability to cross the ball, and a tall player able to get on the end of crosses. That's pace, good crosses, and a target man who can head the ball. We have none of these things. Over the past three or so years, whenever we have had a player that looks like they can offer something like this (something a bit different from Burnell and Sonner), Bateman didn't play them, and so they went off somewhere else. Examples include Mo Sharif, Tyrone Sealney, Charlie Mpi and most recently, Jerome Anderson. I honestly cannot see why the partnership of Burnell and Sonner is preferred over these players.

The fourth point is that our tendency to drift through games appears to have reared it's ugly head again. In the programme notes, Bateman said "Beaconsfield SYCOB ended our promotion hopes here in late April and I shall be reminding the players of that moment and looking to take the points on offer today as some scant consolation from that evening". I don't think it had much of an effect!

I know it's only 3 games into the league season, but we haven't made a very good start. On the evidence I have seen so far (albeit only Guildford and today), we will struggle to make the play-offs. We were very fortunate to be gifted the penalty for the equaliser, and even after that we couldn't make our 1-man advantage count. The fact that we didn't trouble the goalkeeper all day (even after the sending off) means that the alarm bells should be ringing if they aren't already!

Have to agree with you Nathan, the form from the end of last season has not been eradicated yet. I don't know what everyone else thinks but I think Ben Abbey should be our first choice striker but that's just me, I think we are 3 midfield players and 2 strikers short of being promoted this season!

I know it's early and only 3 games in to the season but the same warning signs are visible that have been during the last 3 seasons, I hope I'm proved wrong but I'm very pessimistic about our chances at the moment, for a team that has set a target of winning promotion this season we haven't made one signing that would make the other teams in the league stand up and think "they mean business" and also make us, as supporters, genuinely excited!

Too many players had bad days at the office today. Just as well SYCOB were so poor otherwise we would have been stuffed by a half decent team. Could not hear any leadership on the pitch today. If it is our aim to get out of the league this year, up would be preferable to down please!

I agree with most of what you say Nathan although Jerome Anderson was carrying an injury for most of his time with us so couldn't play. Where I disagree as you know is the Burnell/Sonner partnership which I think is one of the best in this division but they are having to do the work that others on the pitch should be doing.

In the first half there was one instance where Burnell dropped to the halfway line to get the ball and Sonner was in the centre forward position. They were at least 50 yards apart. I'm no great tactician but a forward pair should be working together....as a pair. That's not possible when the support from elsewhere is non-existent. I don't blame them for that........if they aren't getting the service it's only natural for one or both of them to drop deeper if that's the only way they'll get the ball.

We MUST sort the midfield out and yes, we should also have a different forward option on the bench. That's a tricky one though - we need a player who is happy to sit there and warm the bench but one who is capable of coming on and changing a game when needs be. I can't see too many of those about.
