My First Slough Game

Recommended Posts

My first game was Slough v Dagenham (2-0) on 13/9/1971. I was 13 .

We had just done 7 wins and a draw ( against Maidenhead) which gave me the Slough Bug, In the Athenian League.

And we beat Chesham that season twice 5-1 home and 2-0 away so we can beat them lol.

Slough v Chelsea (24/05/1971) at the old greyhound stadium. Part of the deal for Chelsea signing Mickey Droy from Slough was that

Chelsea would play Slough in a friendly with a full first team, which they did. Chelsea won the Cup Winners Cup that season and

it was paraded around the dog track which surrounded the pitch. Score: 2-2.

The first one I definitely remember is 18th August 1990, when I was 10, and the first game in the conference. We beat Boston 2-0 with goals from Steve Thompson and Neal Stanley. The crowd was well over 1,000. I suspect I'd been to few during the previous promotion winning season but none were as memorable as that. I still have my programme stored away somewhere.

I can't remember the first one, but I used to go to the odd game with my Dad when we were in the Conference. I do remember going to games at Wexham Park in the Conference, and also the FA Trophy away game at Stevenage where we won and our keeper saved a penalty.

But in terms of my time supporting the club properly, I went to the Salisbury FA cup game in 2004 (mostly because we saw that it would be possible to play Walsall if we won!) and the 7-0 win against Dorking and the Walsall win and became hooked from there, having also seen us in the last game of the previous season against Croydon where won to stay in the new Ryman Premier.

Impossible to resist. 28 September 1957. Badgered my dad to take me to see the five nil victory versus St Frideswide's in the FA Amateur Cup. Think we may have spoken to stalwart supporters Mr and Mrs Hampton at the game.

FA Cup replay v Bognor Regis in 1985/6 season. Hissing rain and not allowed to go in with Slough fans. Stood on steps of St Johns ambulance for most of game.

Bognor fans made monkey noises everytime Rowan Dodds touched ball - nice people.

Won but can't remember score.

Can not remember year or score but saw us play Hayes at the Dolphin, also saw FA Amateur Cup Final at Wembley. Saw few more odd games in between, but mainly watched Burnham (lived 3 mins away as kid) and Oxford United in those days. First proper game on my own was Swansea away FA Cup in December 1986. Been there ever since, though less frequent since moving away with young family, and running a sat morning team.

10/02/1967 The Slough Observer's back page headline, Lord Kitchener's "Your town needs you", I did not know we had a football team but my mate Ron had been to quite a few games, so off we went via train to Southall for an Amateur Cup game, nil nil at half time, one of their fans shouted "when was the last time you beat us? i shouted back today mate today, and so it was, the record shows 0-1 to SLOUGH but those of us on the line knew that we had been robbed of a goal that had crossed the line before being cleared, we got knocked out by Skelmersdale that year and again by them a couple of years later, lucky to get away from there in one piece.

My first was the FA Cup replay at Wexham Park against AFC Totton where we won 2-0, i think the goals both cam courtesy of Tony Boot.

I then followed our FA Cup run up till Harrogate Railway and then after that started going to league games and was hooked.

As I am now approaching 10 years of supporting the club the last 10 years best 11 for me would be:

Warro

Carbon Daly Woozley Murphy

Mcleary Wilko Coyne Haddow

Hodges Burnell

My team does tend to chop and change and I have probably forgotten people, anyone care to mention who I may have forgotten and where they might sit

Go on then.........Merthyr away in the 90's (91/92 ish) red hot day in August, might have been the fist game of the season? Got a lift up with Mick Langley and met my late Grandad (John Lewis) who had moved to Cwmbran from Slough (with Westons, now Burtons Biscuits) in the mid 80's. Got done 3 or 4 nil and if i remember rightly we were pants!!

And these are interviews i did in 2006 with foghorn, grandad, big lens, roger etc about their first games and why they still support the rebels http://sloughtownsoapbox.blogspot.co.uk/2006/08/once-rebel.html

Had forgotten the Slough v Liverpool game, was under 15 schools cup semi final, rather than a youth team game. Second leg was at Anfield I believe. Was rather packed that day.

Hi guys. I have no idea when my first match was but was taken along to Wexham Park by my ex father in law back in the mid 1970s and got the bug. I remember well the fever around the under 15 schoolboys semi against Liverpool and the full house- no where near 8,000 mind you, more like 6,000 all ticket crowd. I followed the Rebels around quite a bit in those days till family got in the way.

I moved from Slough over 30 yrs back and have occasionally kept an eye on the information coming out of the club, and follow Woking locally. It is a bit like you support your home team, and for me Slough Town is just that simply because it was my then adopted town I have a firm soft spot as they were the first non- league team I ever saw. Watching from afar the trials and tribulations of the club I can only admire the dedication of, as always, a few people, who have kept the show on the road. On a whim checked out your excellent website today and see you are playing at "home" and my local team doesn't have a match. There is therefore only one option for me and I look forward to coming over and watching the Rebels for the first time in many years today and helping to make some noise!

At my first Slough game (which I can't find the date for) I was supporting the opposition! Pre-season friendly Rebels 2-2 Watford Reserves at Wexham Park. Watford were 2-0 up at half-time and Paul Wilkerson (ex-Hornet) was subjected to chants of "Two nil, and it's all your fault..." :D .

I can't pinpoint my first "proper" game after that although I do recall my first away game was against Staines (at Walton) when we won 1-0 with a goal from Neville Roach. A relative newcomer in reality as I've just checked and that was "only" ten years ago.
