Ex Player watch

Nice to see Lee Pearce's appearance in a short piece about Wembley FC on last Saturday's Soccer AM programme. Pity he missed both his attempts at the penalty shoot-out and the Crossbar Challenge. I suspect that Wembley's 2-2 draw away to Uxbridge on Sunday may have provided some consolation.

How the other half live!

Most of Pompey's squad were allowed to turn up late for their defeat at home to Oldham today, so they could have a wee-wee before the journey.

Joking aside, Billy Sentance was someone I thought might do well for us in the longer term, but it was not to be. I wish him well.

Paul Johnson's now playing for Spelthorne Sports!

(Confirmed today by John Mason, who turned up for his first game - well, second half - of the season. John now watches Spelthorne Sports instead as they're virtually across the road from him.)

Can't help feeling that Jonno is wasting his talents. No disrespect to Spelthorne Sports, but unless he has lost a lot, I would have thought another level or two would not be beyond him.

Good luck Paul. Lovely bloke.

I saw Bedfont Sports beat Camberley Town 3-2 yesterday. The Bamfords were both playing, as was Dane Buss in goal. Camberley had Brett Cooper playing, but he was subbed after an hour. He looked a shadow of the player he was for us.

The thing the game can be remembered for was the level of moaning at the ref, mainly from the Bedfont Sports players, with little action taken by the ref.

Several familiar ex-Ashford players on show in this afternoon's match between Bedfont Sports and Egham Town. Three for the home side (2 X Bamford, and another excellent display from Dane Buss in goal). Although the programme listed 6 ex-Ashford players, only two played (Jamie Read and my m-o-m Tommy Hedges). Three other players were listed but did not appear in the starting line-up or on the bench (Shane Graham, Josh Andrew and Jamie Houghton). The 6th ex-Ashford man was Lee Passmore (Manager), who was hobbling around on crutches.

As for the game, Egham deservedly won 2-0 and played a fluent passing game with Tommy Hedges running the midfield, as well as popping up in defence and on both wings. After Egham went 2 up in the second half, Stuart Bamford was booked for arguing with the referee, and was promptly subbed (presumably to prevent a second yellow card as the red mist was clearly descending. After that Bedfont lost their discipline and there were 2 red cards for the home side. Egham could have scored more, but for Dane Buss's smart saves and Egham trying to walk the ball into the net.

Question - is it ok for the home chairman to march onto the pitch after the final whistle and head for the officials? Not sure if he spoke with them.

Pietro Palladino has become the latest former Tangerine to sign for Old Ashfordians, erm, sorry, Godalming Town. How many is that, now?

It is worth pointing out that the majority of the players who are at Wey Court now who have previously played for us did so at a higher level, in a very different time. While Saturday was, ultimately, disapointing, I would not change the course we are on as a club.

That depends on (a) why he did so and (b ) whether or not the officials were happy about it. He may simply have been escorting them off the pitch so he could pay them, as I used to after our home Suburban League games.

Gareth, just so you know that Pietro's cousin plays for us Antonio Simeone, and he alerted us to him being available, as we have a number of suspensions and unavailability coming up, it is down to him to take his chance, but by all accounts did well for you guys last season.

Yes we do have a number of ex Ashford boys, but we also have a number of other players, they have been together over a year now, and are a pleasure to manage.

You have to remmeber that the only player that we took direct from Ashford was Scott Harris, all the others came from other clubs.

The initial link was Gavin Smith (who is one of mine and Jon's best mates), who obviously spent a lot of time at Ashford, and when we signed Adam Foulser from Egham, we were alerted to one or 2 others that were floating about.

But in answer to your question, i think the current players in the squad that are ex Ashford is, Scott and Warren, Guy Hollis, Ryan Lake, Adam Foulser and now Pietro.

Gareth - thanks.

It just seemed odd, and my first thought (knowing of the person concerned) was that he was going to remonstrate with the officials, given the home defeat and two red cards. I don't think I've ever seen a chairman go on the pitch afterwards, but maybe he was concerned that the home players might get themselves into even more hot water with the officials.

Unless I hear otherwise, I guess he should have the benefit of the doubt, but a bit risky I suggest.

Disappointed with Pietro, not because he's gone to Godalming, but I'd heard he would be late starting the season because he was helping out as an Olympics steward / 'games maker'. Did Pietro let the club know he was going elsewhere, or did he not have to say anything as he wasn't contracted?

To be honest, i am not bothered where Pietro has gone. The fact is our team was successful last season because of our desire and team spirit. If a player doesnt want to play for us, for whatever reason then i would sooner they went.

Also after hearing some of the stories about what was happening under Jamie and "ex pro" Warrington (sorry if you have spat your cornflakes over the floor, laughing)... then i dont really blame Scott for getting on his bike.

Its interesting to know how ex players are getting on but as soon as they leave our club then thats what they are, Ex.

Its all about our boys who are playing now and giving everything for the shirt. For instance, Jack Mullan was fantastic on saturday even though it was a difficult game, He gave everything for us.

Onwards and upwards

Neil, it is simply a source of wry amusement to me that, despite neither you nor Jon having played for Ashford, so many players who have turned out for this club play, or have played for Godalming. The number over the last 18 months or so must be well into double figures once people like Gavin, Jon Palmer and so on are taken into consideration.

Not that I have any problem with this. At this level, people will always want to play with, or for, people they know and like. Nor does it surprise me that you and Jon seem to have things going well now at Wey Court that you're working together in management - you were always a pretty effective partnership as players.

Anyway, it should make the games between the clubs intersting!
