Off The Rails? £5,000 Railway Season Tickets On The Horizon.

Recommended Posts

Thank Gawd I don't have to use the rail services now I've retired !

£5,000 a season ticket ? Get your act together railways and give us clean and punctual trains, and you MIGHT JUST have a fair reason for the increase.

(I won't mention Bob Crowe's salary or entertaining expenses for the time being ).

If they use the money to invest in British trains (i.e. made by Bombardier at Litchurch Lane, Derby and not the Siemens ones made abroad) and get the replacements for the soon-to-be-retired Intercity 125 fleet then fine.

Trains are expensive to run and maintain, and they need the money from somewhere.

Breaking news this morning: Virgin ousted from the West Coast Main Line http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-19264614

I was speaking with a friend of mine who works for First Group, and he admitted that he thinks they bid for the franchise at any cost.

Therefore, in the future, we could end up with another National Express ECML (East Coast Main Line i.e. London Kings Cross to Edinburgh) situation where the Government has to intervene.

In addition, First have already ordered 66 extra 125 mph EMUs (Electric Multiple Units) on top of the order for existing Pendolino units.

Having used both Virgin and First, I have more faith in Virgin (especially Cross-Country) than First who regularly screw up the Malvern/Worcester to Warminster/Southampton services out of Gloucester as well as the Cheltenham to London Paddington service.

If we really do want a decent affordable rail network the whole lot would have to be renationalised.
