Sock Tape

So I see the CCL are of course having to tow the line and force clubs at this level to ensure sock tape is the same colour as their socks. How many different colours of sock tape can you get? Is it available in green or amber? Are your players aware of this new ridiculous rule?

From an Assistant Referees standpoint it should make life a little easier, and hopefully will reduce further the prospect of confusion over who last touched the ball out of play (A/R's rely on fast identification of colours to assist them). But it is pointless getting into some big debate about the rights or wrongs of this. It is a FIFA law amendment, and impacts all players effective July 1 2012. The bottom line is that players must not do anything to alter the colour of the sock, so this would include the recent trend to wear oversocks as well as various coloured tapes. You can get a multitute of coloured tape. The smart alternative is to use CLEAR tape. All Club Secs have been made aware of the situation, and match officials were told at the pre-season CCFL meeting that we must enforce the changes. I fear some issues come Saturday - but please don't shoot the messenger!

So - no coloured tape, no coloured undershorts, no coloured compression tops - simples.

This is pathetic in my opinion. Not being too 'tape technical' here either, but the best quality stuck that sticks and does the job just always happens to be made in white too!

So is this a rule roled out in all levels? What about small socks over your kit sock 'Ronaldo style'? Surely they have to be the same now...

Worst rule I have ever heard from the FA! I know the officials are only implementing the Laws but all this will do is cause arguments and resentment at the start of the game! Are the officials going to use 'interpretation' like they do on the field of play???

Love to know how this came about! It's not like there was any major controversy like the whole goal line technology, was there??

Why shouldn't the Law be at this level, don’t we all want to play under the same Laws? Surely if this makes referees and the linesman jobs easier it has to be a good thing? The amount of tape some players use is ridiculous and changes the colour completely, far better off using the old fashioned tie-ups around the top of the stocking (yes, in the Laws of the game they are still called stockings!)

Ouch, £1-70 more expensive than normal tape! Doesn't give the roll size though so you may get more for your money.

Assuming you have some white on your kit then surely using white tape is acceptable? As long as you don't go to ronaldo lengths of tape then it should be fine. And there is no need for that much if you ask me.

Don't really see the problem with this law to be perfectly honest, the amount of tape that some players wear is ridiculous really and majority of it is coz of 'fashion' anyway!

And don't get me started on the whole wearing small white socks over the top of your normal football socks rubbish!! Why can't you wear them underneath your normal football sock...........oh yeah coz Ronaldo doesn't wear it like that!!

What about using sellotape? That's clear and can be bought in different widths. Or how about reverting back to whatever was used before this fad became increasingly common practice over the last few seasons.

This isn't a case of referees making it up, it's a law introduced by FIFA and so it must be adhered to in the same way that undershirts and undershorts should be of the same colour as overshirts and overshorts and that wearing jewellery (including bangles and the like) is not permitted.

The fact that players aren't aware of this law change is not the fault of the officials - guidance has been provided to clubs so it should be their responsibility to inform players.

Some laws are becoming silly! I remember a couple of seasons back being booked as we lined up to come out because my under armour vest was black and it was under a blue and white striped top. Reason was I ignored the referee's request when told in the warm up. Not being funny but if you can't see it why should I change it. It was a vest and not a long sleeved under garment with a short sleeved top!

Wattsy

On the basis of what you've said that seems unreasonable and perhaps could have been managed, and resolved, differently.

Quite often officials will be proactive and remind players during the warm-up of the fact they've got different undershorts to the overshorts or still have earrings in and jewellery on. That way there's no excuses or surprises subsequently.

Can't really understand what the discussion is about, if the law has been brought in by FIFA and the ref's have been enforced to adhere to it there's no discussion needed. Club officials are aware and it's their job to pass that information on and ensure that the tape [if used] is the same colour as the socks. The first test will be when players line up prior to entering the field of play when the assistants do their boots, jewellery, etc, checks and anyone stupid enough to think the law doesn't apply to them will find themselves missing the kick off. How are your team mates going to feel if you go 1 -0 down whilst one thicko is stood on the touchline trying to unravel 20 yards of the wrong colour tape from his socks ?

Well done FIFA! Some teams were resembling the Barbarians Rugby team with the state of there socks and what is all this wearing and extra pair of socks over their normal socks....? Not only does it look shabby it also make the assistants job harder in certain situations.

You can get theatrical tape in all colours and failing that the clear tape as mentioned on here is ok!
