Pre Season Update

Recommended Posts

As we embark on our opening Pre Season fixtures with a visit to Holyport this week I thought I would provide a quick update on the squad.

Players already committed and registered so far are James Warrington, Alex Brown, Dave Woozley, Nathan Bowden-Haase, Danny Murphy, Adam Logie,Danny Burnell, Ben Abbey, Sean Sonner, Ollie Burgess, Sam Bateman, Leigh Mason, Dominic Rhone, Dave Deeney and Ashley Deeney. We are also looking at a number of lads who will feature during the pre season games and I expect Stuart Swift to sign league forms when he returns from holiday on 24th July having agreed to. Discussions are still ongoing with Simon Sweeney, Steve Perkins and Chris Herron who have other committments at the moment and are yet to appear at training. Definately not returning are Steve Sinclair, Paul Coyne and Jamie Jackson and I wish them all well for their futures.

Training has been excellent, with the lads returning in good condition and the new lads settling in very well and we have worked hard and enjoyed a 90 minute run out today behind closed doors at the Polish Club.

I will now be absent until the 25th July as I am leaving for a family holiday in Portugal early tomorrow (sorry Cookham Rebel) but will be keeping a very close watching brief until then and look forward to updating you all upon on my return.

Pre season is all about preparation for our first league game on 18th August and we'll find out this week who that will be against. I have added an additional pre season game to our schedule this evening, 31st July away at Leverstock Green with a 7pm KO.

Great to get an update. There's a couple of immediate observations. It looks like Jacko has left (again!). He'll always be a Rebel however. I assume that means that the youngster from last year will deputise for Warro if required? Also noticeable by his absence from either the returning or departing list is Jerome Anderson. Perhaps that's a waiting game to see how his trials pan out elsewhere. Would love to see him back.

Overall having lost Sinclair and Coyne if we then don't re-sign Herron, Perkins and Sweeney that feels like we're a little light as a squad compared to last year. Let's hope that some of the trialists can sign and do a job for us.

Great to see Ben Abbey giving it another go.He's an infectious character and you can't help but like the guy.Certainly good for morale and spirit around the squad.

I hope the other older statesman Steve Perkins has the time to commit to playing again,as his experience, leadership skills and general football ability is an asset worth having for the squad.

Chris Herron is a useful bit part squad player to have around the fringes of the team but can't see him getting that much game time this season now that we've signed Dominic Rhone,Danny Murphy and Stuart Swift[soon].However,on a good pitch he's a skilful, tricky player that can change a game especially coming on from the bench.Worth keeping for the odd game or two.

Simon Sweeney is a big loss to the cause if he doesn't sign but with Ashley Deeney and Alex Brown and Dave Deeney plus whoever our reserve right back is,one would presume we have cover for the right back slot but Simon Sweeney is worth hanging onto if we can,in my opinion.

Let's hope we have a big tall forward as a trialist,as this is something we desperately need.

On the plus side we have signed 4 new players.

On the minus side we have definitely lost 2 players and possibly as many as 5 if Sweeney, Heron and Perkins don't re-sign.

It also looks like the players that most of us feel we need i.e. a creative midfielder and a different type of forward to what we have now, will have to come out of the woodwork from the trialists which IMO is leaving it to chance and not the best position to be in.

Still you never know, we'll just have to hope that some gems are un-earthed from the trialists.

Doesn't seem like Steve's let you off the hook,Cookham Rebel !

No amount of snivelling, sucking up is going to get you out of it,by the looks of it. LOL !!!

You have to admit,CR[and Mr B],it has become quite comical, the love/admiration you have for each other!

Whats done is done 3spirit, I over stepped the mark last Summer and apologised for it!

I took Steve's comment in the first post of this thread as a bit of a light hearted banter, and still see it that way. Regardless of what's gone on previously, the man has built a squad capable of challenging for a league title in our current division and the play off places in the league above!

I for one hope he wins the league this season and shuts me up good and proper, in the current football world Managers do not get enough time to be a success, in 1990 Sir Alex Ferguson was 90 minutes from the sack in an FA Cup game at Nottingham Forest and look how that turned out! Who knows where Steve Bateman will eventually lead us but as you have said previously, the man goes about his job quietly and professionally, and the players trust him, they are very rare qualities these days!
