readingrebel
To try and spark a bit of life into this dead forum I thought I'd post my views on Warro's interview with the Observer. In the interview Warro says that we should be favourites to win the league because of the players we've signed and the fact that no teams have been relegated into our division. To play devils advocate, I don't think it makes a jot of difference if relegated teams are in our division or not. I think I'm right in saying that last season the 2 relegated teams finished midway and nearly bottom and the teams that went up were newly promoted and a team that finished near the bottom the previous season. As far as players we've signed, yes we look to have signed 3 good players but we've also lost 2 good players and possibly 3 if, as it looks Simon Sweeney does'nt sign. So as far as I'm concerned justification as favourites and challenging for the title will depend on our next couple of signings if there is to be any, otherwise IMO we will be one of a number of teams vying for a play-off place only. Windsor Rebel
Without the likes of St Neots and Bedworth this season, I cant see any other teams bar us being made favourites. Biggleswade seem to be signing a few proven players on, so I think they will be there or thereabouts. Have seen Guildford, and they are beatable. Not sure about Royston and Godalming. Thatcham have signed a few including Lee Riddell. Think we need to find a Paul Coyne replacement, although I am sure Steve B. has this is hand. Apart from that, the squad looks strong enough to me. readingrebel
Yes, favourites based purely on the facts that we have made the last three play-offs and on the surface there is no big spending team like a St Neots to contend with. In as far as players in and out IMO we are, as it stands, no weaker or stronger than last season. History tells us that there will be one or two teams that will come out of the woodwork to be contention for that one automatic promotion place. IMO it will be Guildford City and Biggleswade. WR, your right, we need to find a creative midfielder to re-place Paul Coyne and another goal scoring forward, until then IMO the juries out as far as us being title favourites and contenders to win the league. Cookham Rebel
I agree with you RR. Looking at it so far, I think no one is an out right favourite and that it will be between us, Biggleswade and Guildford. I am worried as I get the impression from the paper reports that Leigh Mason is the replacement for Paul Coyne! Don't get me wrong, Mason is a very good player when fit but is he on a par or better than Coyne? I don't think he is! With Warrington in goal and Brown, NBH and Woozley in front of him, we have the solid base again that will not concede many goals. Ashley Deeney and Rhone will give us more on the flanks but in my opinion, with Coyne gone, I worry about where our threat will come from from the centre of the park, Dave Deeney will be the enforcer but who will partner him, I'm not saying that Logie, Burgess, Mason and Swift aren't good enough but I think we need 2 central midfielders who can score 10-15 goals each! Up front, we have Burnell and Sonner who will score goals given the service but with Anderson or Abbey not yet confirmed as returning that leaves us light up top and in need of 2 strikers, who give a different option, a target man and a striker with lightning pace! We have the base but still think we need 4 more players, hopefully they will arrive! If Danny Murphy returns I'd be inclined to move him infield to play as an attacking midfielder with Dave Deeney and 1 other, there are plenty of options and cover! At the moment, confirmed are, unless I'm wrong: Warrington, Jackson, Brown, NBH, Woozley, A.Deeney, Rhone, D.Deeney, Logie, Swift, Mason, Burgess, Sonner, Burnell That's 14 players and 2-3 short of the 16-17 man squad required, maybe we'll unearth some gems in the Reserve and Youth Teams to make up the numbers! COME ON YOU REBELS!!!
Chris
Should get a bit busier as of next week on here, first friendly Tuesday then fixtures out the following day. Hasn't Jacko stayed with Harrow?
readingrebel
To date we only know that Warrington, Dave and Ashley Deeney and Dominic Rhone have definately signed because that's what we've all either read in the local papers or read the link on the web-site. We can only hope the players from last seasons squad have re-signed because, as yet, no official statement has been made by the club one way or the other. 3spirit
In the Buckinghamshire Advertiser this week,Danny Edwards-manager of Chalfont St Peter,is quoted as saying that the only team splashing the cash in the Central division is Slough! With Warro and the new players claiming we're favourites and other managers of the division saying we're the team to beat ie Martin Stone,Tony Choules.I think we're adding unnecessary pressure to our season. All we're really doing with our players saying such daft statements is fuelling the opposition for when they play us,they will be easily motivated to bring us 'big time Charlies' down a peg or two. I understand our need to get promoted and having a manager that believes in the player's abilities and the player's themselves being focussed on the job at hand but no one can accurately predict who will be the eventual winners of the division, especially as we haven't played one single game yet. Over numerous seasons of watching Slough,I have witnessed many teams 'giving it large' on what they are going to do ie getting promoted or making the play-offs. Many have finished mid-table or in the relegation places. So I don't believe we should count our chickens before they are hatched just yet! Don't get me wrong,I believe we can be successful this year but we still need 3 more additions[2 new forwards to add to the qualities of Danny and Sean, and another centre midfielder who can cover a lot of ground,as Leigh Mason has never been the quickest and none of our midfielders of last season have any turn of pace. Simon Sweeney could prove to be our biggest loss,as he is so good at stopping players getting by him and his experience on the right side of defence and in the centre when needed,is a great asset for any team to have. I'm hoping Dave Deeney doesn't turn out to be another Nick Roddis.A player who had a great record of playing at a very good standard of Non-League football, only to find he was well past his best when we got him! What's wrong with being quietly assured and letting our football play do the talking?
readingrebel
I think the 'splashing the cash' rumour has initially come from Windsor's Keith Scott who stated in the papers that Slough had made Michael Chennels an unbelievable offer for a step 4 club. Dave Deeney is only 25, so as long as he still has the desire and as he has stated gets back to enjoying playing football, hopefully he won't be as you say, another Nick Roddis. I bow down to your superior knowledge,Reading Rebel,I thought Dave Deeney was older than that. However, the Hemel fans on their forum didn't seem that enamoured by him or the fact that he was leaving but that could just be sour grapes on their part. Either way,I still think we need re-inforcements in certain areas for Slough to be champions.Hopefully our discipline will be better this season, too. Certainly not in the way St Neots did but teams like Biggleswade must be paying good money, players like Jamie Arlick and Lee Allinson don't come cheap. Dave Deeney has stated that he hasn't enjoyed his football for a few seasons now and joining a struggling Hemel team I would imagine didn't do anything to re-ignite his enthusiasm for the game. He also seems to have lost any trust in the managers he's played under which couldn't have helped. He knows and trusts SB and the reason why I think we will see the best of Dave Deeney. You're certainly right 3spirit, until we get those crucial few players I don't see us winning the league.
Ian
3spirit I thought our discipline wa greatly improved last year? Anyone got any stats or was I just wearing my beer goggles No, I think it was the beer goggles, Mark! That said, if you took out the cards for dissent/verbal abuse it wasn't that bad. That's an area we really need to focus on.
