THE DREAMS OF AN 18 YEAR KID !

Recommended Posts

Dreams do come true for young footballers if they have the committment, right attitude and prepared to work hard....ask NICK POWELL 18 year old Crewe Alexandra striker who signed a 4 year deal for Man Utd.

Good luck son I wish you all the best.

How refreshing and encouraging is that for other young wannabies ..I take it he didn't just want to play with his mates............. ;) !!!

What about the broken dreams of 1000's of youngsters, getting a Pro contract is like winning the Lottery.Maybe the F.A. should take note of the way Crewe coach, been a hotbed of Talent, for as long as I can remember.Shame is though, someone else did all the hard work, the big clubs reap the rewards. Most C.C.L.players were at pro clubs, earlier in their lives, they start at 8yrs old now, many heartbroken by 16.

18 year old Jimmy Fenlon has signed a first team contract at Wimbledon, played a few games for me and Spy at Farleigh and lives next door to me. Good luck to him, again a player with the right attitude, commitment etc.

Very well done to Nick, he's been a great player for Crewe and the latest in a production line of talent overseen by Dario Gradi.

David Platt, Rob Savage, Craig Hignett, Rob Hulse, Dean Ashton etc. all made their mark at the Cheshire club and all went on to achieve great things within the game.

As for the players who didn't make it, it's hard but in life you'll always have those people who stand out. Maybe they work harder or want success more. I remember that Frank Lampard (Junior) commented that at the age of 11 he was running three miles or more every morning, in order to keep in a peak of fitness.

There are high standards in life, and sadly those who don't achieve them won't make the cut. It's not that they are lazy (although some might be) but we can't all be world class footballers. I enjoyed playing football as a youngster, and dreamt of lifting the FA Cup as captain of Arsenal, but I knew around about 17-18 years of age that it would never happen so I grafted hard and got on with living my life. Just because a player doesn't make it at one club doesn't mean that he should give up - look at DJ Campbell for example and the career he's now got after having to restart with Yeading.

One thing I'll say about Powell and the players who went before him is that Dario would have been like a Father to them. He's taught them how to train and behave in the right way - a motivator and a leader and with over 1000 games under his belt a pretty decent manager as well!
