And of course you can back your statement up with solid proof

Karen – Do these notes from an old programme I dug out from 2007 sound as if they are penned by an individual who would rob the Club blind, I don’t think so infact I’ve never read such passion in my life:

YOUR CHAIRMAN

A number of individuals picked me up on my programme notes following our fixture with Cranfield United a fortnight ago and asked ‘if I was for real’, they asked whether I was really as passionate about our Football Club as my notes suggested and stated that the comparison with the Holland teams of 1974 and 1978 was surely somewhat ‘over the top’. They also surprisingly felt that my regular praise of our Head Coach Clement ‘the messiah’ Temile was a little ‘premature’ considering that we hadn’t won anything as yet and even indicated that, on a number of occasions, we had been caught with our trousers, or should I say shorts, around our ankles against Cockfosters and at Brache Sparta when tactics supposedly left a lot to be desired.

Well I will answer those critics in the only way I know how and that is from the heart. I didn’t have to join forces with Kentish Town Football Club and could have buried my head in the sand and settled for a quiet life however when our Manager Frank Zanre approached me some years ago and as soon as he opened his mouth I was hooked and have had the time of my life ever since. The old fashioned football Chairman is a dying breed however I am one of them, very much in the Ken Bates, Doug Ellis and Jack Walker mould, I believe in discipline and hard work and players should not be allowed to get away with murder as so many appear to do in this day and age thinking they can call the tune and rule the roost. This is the beauty of Kentish Town who, despite having players that are fully entitled to be unruly and disrespectful due to their tough upbringing on the Council Estates of Camden are the model of professionalism and that is so refreshing and wonderful to see.

Coming back to the criticisms of my programme notes, if indeed that’s what they were, I am at a total loss as to how anybody could possibly question the achievements of Clement this season who had no idea what he was letting himself in for when he joined the Club in August. I even go as far as to say it was probably the biggest coup in non league football history when he agreed to come onboard as I did not expect his nod of agreement despite my going down on bended knee in a ‘we are not worthy’ fashion in front of him. The rest is history and our league position and amazing progress has been down to Clement and the incredible partnership he has forged with our Manager Frank who can spot talent a country mile away and has only recently signed two exciting prospects in Gemechis Erana and Anselem Orisakwe who should both be in our squad today.

My reference and comparison to the ‘total football’ of the Dutch side in the 70’s is not tongue in cheek by any stretch of the imagination, just ask Hoddesdon Town who were totally mesmerised by our display at Lowfield just before Christmas when we won 3-0 and could have possibly quadrupled that tally following a second half so reminiscent of those bright orange shirts in Germany in 1974 and Argentina four years later. For me, and without wishing to single out any players, Tom McMullen was a revelation at Hoddesdon and I shook my head in disbelief when watching him majestically bringing the ball out of defence in a Franz ‘Der Kaiser’ Beckenbaur fashion. Sadly Tom was forced to sit out the following two home games against Cockfosters and Cranfield United and it’s the Cockfosters game that still rankles with everyone at the Club knowing that we were robbed blind on the day, not so much by Cockfosters, who still thought it was Christmas, but by the terrible conditions.

I have been busy behind the scenes recently, along with other members of the Club’s Management Committee, trying to lay the foundations for our long term future and this includes a permanent home for next season when it is very much hoped that we will find ourselves in the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division. We are all fed up to the back teeth with groundsharing and the uncertainty that comes with it, for three seasons now we have been unfairly dictated to and, on a number of occasions been treated like naughty school boys caught with our fingers in the biscuit jar, things need to change dramatically in order for us to progress and not be looked upon as paupers any longer.

Thank you for reading my ramblings and enjoy this afternoons encounter, can I take this opportunity of thanking Winslow United for very kindly hosting the game today.

If in fact these words did appear in print (and we only have your word that they indeed did) then the author would have willing put his name to them, something you appear to have forgotten to add.

Judging by the turn of phrase I bet his initials are CR!

So Rhodes you were that Chairman, investing five figures of your hard earned cash - why then did the club dismiss such a generous benefactor or perhaps you are not telling the full truth.

Just to show that the previous article I posted earlier today was not just a one off, or flash in the pan, here is another one from the same 2006/2007 campaign (well before Nellie’s time) showing how devoted the then Chairman was to his beloved Kentish Town and that he clearly had the best interests of the Club at heart:

YOUR CHAIRMAN

Welcome to Vale Farm, home of Wembley Football Club who have very kindly agreed to accommodate us this evening, at very short notice, whilst our groundshare agreement for the 2006/2007 football season with Hendon Football Club is being ironed out, we hope that this will be done shortly.

Welcome to a new dawn, a new beginning for our Club and, last but not least, a warm welcome to some new faces, namely Clifford Rhodes, Club Secretary, and in particular Clement Temile, our new Head Coach. I am particularly delighted to be able to boast the capture of Clement from Haringey Borough who will oversee all the teams and age groups at the Club and who will help to bring us success as well as raise our profile in no uncertain terms. Clement is a former Nigerian International player who has played at the very highest level of the beautiful game, including the 1984 African Cup of Nations final when Nigeria met Cameroon in the Ivory Coast in front of 50,000 hostile and baying fans. Clement regards Cameroon flagpole dancer Roger Milla from Italia '90 as one of his closest friends so we are all in the company of greatness this evening although there is nobody more down to earth than Clement and he will not thank you for approaching him with your autograph books and your camera's in hand. Naturally we hope this will be a successful campaign for the Club and promotion is our main aim, I will be doing my best from behind the scenes to ensure that we realise our full potential in what will be a tough division to crack with the likes of our opponents last Saturday Stony Stratford Town and our opposition, and good friends from Luton this evening, Brache Sparta, who finished as runners up last term and only missed out on promotion to the Premier Division on a technicality relating to ground regulations. They are a well run Club and the corresponding fixture last season, albeit played at our former temporary home Potters Bar Town, resulted in an exciting 3-2 win for Sparta who also defeated us 4-1 at their Foxdell Recreation Ground home.

From a personal point of view I am looking forward to the challenge ahead, a new football season is a fresh start, a blank piece of paper, and an opportunity to put past disappointments behind you, it will be up to the players to show dedication and commitment and these two factors alone will show me a thing or two, they will all be treated equally and players will be expected to perform fairly and to the best of their ability on the field of play as well as act as ambassadors for our Football Club off it.

The players have worked very hard in pre-season training and in the three friendly fixtures we have played, I was particularly pleased with the performance against Premier Division Hertford Town at their impressive Hertingfordbury Park home last week, we worked well that evening against arguably the favourites to win the Premier Division giving them the fright of their lives and our goal scored by the promising Baron ‘the Baron’ Charlery was something to be hold leaving all who had the privilege of witnessing it open mouthed.

In addition, a number of the Reserve Team players are knocking on the door of the First Team and it will be the job of the Coaches to help nurture them along so they can realise their potential, this is a something I will be taking a keen interest in personally as I want our Club to be all about progression and looking to the future, my vision in the long term is for the Club to progress through the Pyramid structure and into the Football League itself.

I touched on earlier that we hope to be groundsharing with Hendon this season at their historic Claremont Road home although this has yet to be confirmed, if this is indeed the case then we will be extremely privileged. Hendon is very much an institution in non-league football and a name recognised Worldwide, Claremont Road has been home to Hendon Football Club since the 1926/1927 season and it has staged a number of England amateur international matches as well as an Olympic Games Qualifier.

We hope to get off to a flying start this evening against Brache Sparta and I look forward to a good, entertaining and above all, fair match.
