Yes. I swear occasionally, but sometimes it's in the heat of the moment and soon regretable.

You hear much worse language on the terracing.

Plus, we are also talking about people with Day Jobs and may not have a good one.

For me Football is a pleasure, but also a release from the day to day stress of life.

Plus officials at our level are not the best.

I'm with you up to a point, 'O'. But there are some players, managers and supporters who just don't know when to stop.

The people on the pitch (player and managers etc.) have to be particularly aware of their conduct because they are subject to immediate censure by the referee but also because they are effectively on show performing to spectators many of whom are not young blokes for whom swearing is just part of everyday life. And having a poorly paid day job doesn't excuse anyone from unreasonable behaviour.

Come on you O's

Whilst you may hear worse language from spectators, it's not the job of the officials to deal with that. What they can deal with is dissent from players and management (and others in the technical area), and the FA introducing a fine that penalises clubs who receive a certain number of cautions for dissent is one way of addressing the issue.

Stating that 'officials at our level are not the best' is irrelevant too. It's akin to me saying players at that level are not the best either!

I thought referees we had in the Ryman 1 South were pretty good last season. I guess I'll see some of the same faces next season with more of the 'assistants' taking the middle.

Swearing or abuse ON the pitch is the direct responsibility of the officials.

Swearing or abuse OFF the pitch is the direct responsibility of the club.

You will hear the occasional 'F' word in the terraces, usually said in the heat of the moment, but when there is a tirade of direct abusive and/or obscene language directed at officials and/or players, it is the club that MUST re-act.

Fortunately, extremely rare at Meadowbank. I think I have only have had to 'have-a-word' once or twice in the last few seasons, usually after a complaint from another spectator.

Most refs know me and know its directed at myself.i will appeal but abuse a ref,no point!

No excuse there Pearcey, but if you had Tourettes, that would be a different matter.Or would it,has any player dared use it as an excuse?

I just hope that respect is a two-way street, as I've seen a few referees in my time who I'd consider to be 'suspect.'

I can remember playing in a match in Cambridge in about 2000, where the referee we had was one of the worst referees I had ever met. Worse than Shapter and Rennie in my opinion. From the kick-off, he gave decision after decision to the opposition and even they seemed embarrassed when one of their defenders barged our main striker over on the penalty spot only for the referee to issue a goal kick!

Once we started complaining, the cards were flashed left right and centre. At half-time we were 2-0 down and had 6 players (including myself for asking the referee what planet he was from) booked and the gaffer nearly knocked the referee sideways. We very nearly refused to play the second half, and the manager kept us in the changing room past the bell.

Second half, we lost 5-0 and all hell broke loose. The gaffer threatened legal action, as three of our players got badly whacked (no bookings for those players who caused the bruises, accidental or otherwise) plus we ended up with nine men on the field when hardly any of the bookings were fair. The referee said 'well i'm not accountable to you, and besides my union will back me so get stuffed.'

That referee showed us no respect at all - he bullied us (and yes I would categorise it as bullying) and was allowed to get away with it. All we got back from the league was guidance on how to control our players better.

Referees = Angels, Players = Devils. I wonder just how many Ref's bet on games (yes, even at Steps 5 & 6 and below).

My son (13) got told by a ref this season "your pi55ing me off!".respect runs both ways,I see this ref as a 16 yr old bully.
