Billy edwards testimonial day

Did anyone else notice the two games we witnessed yesterday, the first of which the "under 12s" I think was an absolute joy to watch as Lee Spillers "Soccer Elite" lads seem to play the kind of football that even dare I say Barca would proud of. Free flowing and the passes were of that of an experienced/older player. Felt sorry for our lads as the were shown how to play football by these young lads.

The second game was like watching a re-run of the team that bought us the Glory days (slower agreed) but no-less entertaining. Some of the "old" team would probably give the new team a run for their money but my main point to this thread is not once did we witnesse the hoof ball football that has given us stiff necks for the last few seasons :)

I re-lived the good ole days yesterday when chatting to the players after the match something that sadly is going amiss these days (note: Im not saying our players dont chat btw just seem more interested in getting scran and getting home ASAP). The days of the "team" staying to have a celebratory/libation are sadly gone but the old guard yesterday seemed to enjoy and revel in what I can only say for myself was a fantastic day and a terrific blast from the past. :)

Shame more people did'nt turn out to see our legends perform maybe for the last time :(

I was'nt there ,and glad you enjoyed it DR.

Pleased for Bill Edwards.

Just wonder whether you are a bit harsh on the modern day player DR?

Is there a bit of a difference between a one off game meeting 'old mates' and todays players (who are part time )and have things like lawns to mow and shopping to do-who meet every week-sometimes twice a week-and thus have less time to spend 'socialising'

I don't think its vastly different to things as they were 8 years ago ?

And to my mind-neither is the football-it never changes-8 years ago-many were complaining about these same'mature' players out there yesterday playing' too much hoofball'.

Never changes-year by year/club by club.

'Hoofball ' is good-do it properly and it will win you the ryman league

Thoroughly good afternoon. Great to see the Conference team again. As a supporter said as he walked out the ground, These guy's showed us how far of the old pace we are today. It was interesting to see the fitness of some of those guy's, Phil Collins looked to be in great shape as did Leon. No 10 Lee Williams was my M-o-M, this guy as not played a game of football since the day he left Margate.

I agree with Danny Riding, Lee Spillers "soccer Elite" kids were great. Imagine this, speaking to a proud parent, he said these kids had never played a competitive game before yesterday. The Little( I mean "Messi" little)kid (Harrison) with the long Argentinean style hair was a revelation. Great header for the 1st goal. The lad with the orange boots also stood out for me. Like Danny R, i was impressed with the way they spread the ball be it wing to wing or one touch in midfield. Questions need to be asked in certain quarters, this is the standard that we need to be aiming for if we are to pay more than lip service to bringing youngsters through.

Mention also goes to Steve "Winkle" Winch, who claimed a goal for the black and amber. Also to "Matt Lamprell" and "Pridders" in the respective goals.

All in all a great afternoon.

Fantastic day, thoroughly enjoyed it all. Those youngsters were amazing, all the oohs and aahhhs and applause from the crowd must have been a great thrill for them. Also pleased to see the players standing on the touchline at half time giving the youngsters their support. A great day all round.

Just got my broadband bak on, Would also like to say what a great day it was on saturday. Said to my son in law who could not make it, it was a joy to watch the talent of these elder players. And yes I agree would have given the present day side a run for their money
