Vs Crystal Palace ?

Just wondering if the club have realised that the night we play the Crystal Palace friendly have they realised that night is the opening ceromony for the Olympic games . A mate of mine was coming along as he`s a Palace fan and bringing a few mates with him but after they realised the Games were on have decided to go upto London to take in the atmosphere up there . So in this case the club have lost about 5 - 6 spectators , how many could it be because of the Olympics starting .

Change the date if there is time as you could lose alot of revinue .

I don't think the opening ceremony of the Olympics will really keep people away. The finals of the euros or the date of an england game definetly. But a load of flag waving and dancing and probably a bit of jls I don't think so. I know I'd rather watch margate v palace reserves. Or just watch ITV instead of wat watching an opening ceremony!

Take in the atmosphere? In other words stand in front of a big screen in a square surrounded by tourists watching some mind-numbing, pompous sh!te about the greatness of humanity.

The Olympics used to be good when it was just people running around an athletics track and jumping/throwing things. But the tripe and hype that surrounds it now is facking appalling.

Is'nt it a concert with duran duran and stereophonics interspersed with a parade of people in unifomr?.

That given-whilst i don't get too excited about psf's no matter who the opposition is-and agree that a Margate game is more important than the world cup final ,any premiership nonsense and the discovery of aliens living amongst us all combined; i equally feel it is unfortunate that it is this night-as despite the bravado on here-many many will in practice stay away-as indeed will i in favour of an event that occurs once in my lifetime.

(if it was a meaningful league game- would be differen and would then take priorityt, but it is very hard to attract people to friendlies no matter who the oppostion ).

(the post match headline will be:

margate excel but attendance disappoints

Hopefully between now and July somebody will invent some kind of device to record tv programmes so people can watch the Palace game and then savour the spectacle of an 80's band playing a couple of their greatest hits followed by a bit of dancing and people waving sparklers about.

Only trying to think positive but if there is only 300 there then so be it . If there is 8-900 then they have all come out to watch . Money is everything to a club like us so if the turnout is [****!!****] against a high profile side then that won`t be no fault of the club i take it . No wonder the lads who play for the club want out if this is the way you can piss take your own .

One would suspect that MFC haven't had that much freedom in selecting the date for the game otherwise it would have been played on a Saturday. Personally I have no interest in the Olympic opening ceremony although I will follow many of the sporting parts of the games. It's a shame that some might have to make a choice but hey ho that's life and it's great that we do have a high profile game to look forward to amongst the PSFs this summer - and let's not kid ourselves on the expectations, there weren't that many at HDP when we had games against Carlisle and Millwall a few years ago.

These are the games Don where you would expect the club to do everything possible to pull in as many pepole as poss . If no one turned up to watch West Ham play us how dissapointed would you be because they had all got on a bus and gone to watch Charlton play Ramsgate . lol

Apologies if I was somebody seen as taking the piss - I actually agree that unfortunately the Olympic thing could knock quite a bit off the attendance but as somebody with no interest whatsover in the Games or it's opening ceremony I'd struggle to understand why somebody couldn't just record the ceremony and watch it once they got home from the Palace game.

Just a quick note on the scheduling of this match. Over the years we've had a number of supporters on this forum and elsewhere asking why we don't get prestigious friendlies. Having got this one, albeit as part of the Kwesi deal, this was the only date within a reasonable timeframe that Palace could do, so we accepted it.

Notwithstanding the Olympic opening ceremony, we still anticipate significant interest in the match and advance tickets willl be on sale very shortly.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just a reminder to say that tickets are available and going well i believe for the game.

Another point. Both myself and the majority of my passengers are underwhelmed by the prospect of the games let alone by the medias attempts to whip up a frenzy regarding the Torch relay. Is it the economic situationthe cause of this or, the fact that all that money is being spent to turn a small area of east London into a concrete future ghetto.

Equally people do not seem to be over interested in the up coming 2012 euro championships. I have not picked up one in the past couple of weeks who knew its dates or where it is taking place.

I for one cannot wait for the Euro's and the Olympic soccer tournament. I would also love to see the Toulon Tournament on terrestrial TV Though, I wonder if Holding the Euro's / World cup in the same year as the Olympics is over kill. Perhaps the Olympics could be held on odd years.
