Prost!

Sjj2112 - I didn't know you were into Formula 1, have you ever been to any races out of interest, the coverage on BBC 1 is second to none isn't it with Jake Humphrey, David Coulthard and Eddie Jordan.

Lets get back to topic folks rather than discuss the demon drink which has been the ruin of so many lives. I see that Francois Hollande was officially sworn in today, the weather in Paris made ours seem tropical in comparison which could well be an omen for Hollande’s future tenure as French President:

WTF?!?!? Are you serious?!

At what point did I mention F1?

Prost! is the German equivalent of Cheers! and the dicussion was about an Austrian (German speaking) brewery.

I really would seek help if I were you.

And as for lecturing other people about wandering off topic - pot, kettle, black...

Returning to the theme of this thread, the French make some incredibly good red wine, although I personally prefer some of the Northern Italian wines. I enjoy the way the Spanish often chill their reds, and find it a more civilised than drinking it at room temperature. Much as I love Greece and the naughty Greeks, I cant think of a more vile tasting wine than retsina.

The French are cheating (Think World Cup play offs v ROI) "Cheese eating surrender monkeys" (Groundskeeper Willie's words, not mine).

I haven't touched a drop of their plonk since.

I understood perfectly Rhodes' reference - I was merely pointing out what was actually being discussed...

Yeah but you know how he likes to go off at a tangent.

French and italian wine is so cheap, they keep the best for themselves (and send the plonk to the UK and wider) and buy it and drink it like we do milk and bottled water. The italians package good table quality wines in litre tetrapaks and nothing sells for more than 75 cents. A Bardolino might cost as much as Euro 2.50 and a Barolo around Euro 5. And yet I've seen no anti social behaviour ever in the towns and villages, maybe you'd get it in a big city occasionally but I wouldn't know.

I don't remember ever seeing yobbish behavior anywhere in Europe unless the Brits or Dutch are involved. Bangkok is the rip off capitol of the world and I never felt safe in Cambodia, even though there doesn't seem to be a drinking culture in Asia. Does anyone have any theories why it always seem to be us that causes all the trouble wherever we go?, because I'm at a loss on that one.

I was in a Munich Bar a few years ago and my friend (English) managed to jog the arm of a german next to him which caused the germans beer to spill. Big focker he was, might have had a horned helmet on his head, huge giant. I thought "Here we go" but the german smiled, apologised himself (I ask you) and bought us all a round. I've seen similar incidents here in the Uk many times, we all have, none of them really ending that well.

I wonder whether it is in the British gene because similar causes have completely different results elsewhere. The only other races who can't hold their drink are the native american indians and the maoris. You can have bar fights in the US but thats usually too much testosterone on its own. (Maybe).

Bangkok is mayhem but hardly unsafe unless you are a pissed up westerner and have no respect for the locals.

I hear many stories regarding people getting conned in SE Asia but generally it's people going against basic common sense. If its too good to be true then often it is.

I have felt much safer late at night in Bangkok/HCM and PP than in parts of London.

With regards to Wine, when in France recently I couldn't believe the prices in supermarkets reasonable quality too. Prefer Italian though and one of the finest a had was a ligurian one.

Old school friend of mine worked may years in Thailand, married a Thai woman and has now retired, living outside Bangkok.

He says it's far safer living there than in London, Manchester or Birmingham !

Have always found Bangkok safe enough, its just the rip off merchants and sleaziness that gives it a bad name. Phnom Penh and Siem Reap in Cambodia were the places we never felt safe in.

Do enlighten us............

What an earth are you talking about Keeps, Rhodesy of course is a well seasoned traveller who will have been all over the world many times on his whopping bank busting salary of £24k a year (he's really hit those yearly performance reviews scoring those top pay scales!) and will have been to Thailand many times on the Internet Cafe's computer. We're learning all sorts today, even his extensive knowledge of daytime TV, the man's a literal mine of knowledge!
