Rhodesy what are you talking about? My retirement plan has been a huge failure, I always planned to retire at 54, here I am at 49 and I retired in April this year. That is piss poor planning and btw I can't even get at my company pensions for at least 10 years! I'm quite annoyed I can tell you.

Enjoy your retirement Gordon, and if your anything like myself and most of the early retirees that I know you will wonder where you found the time to ever go to work, and any ability to time manage will quickly disappear.

Cheers Alan, well I don't feel like I've stopped yet since we've been packing up the house now for what seems ages! We're going to divide our time between our home here and in Italy (we're about 30 miles from Perugia Rhodesy so I'll keep an eye out on the appeal for you!). I might start another business out there if I get bored but I'll always be around!

Grandchildren put a stop to our dream of a home abroad, and I wouldn't have it any other way, but the thought of gardening in Italy, plus the food, wine, and climate is making me green with envy. Any decent football clubs close by?

Sell the grandchildren it's not too late! I think you'd love it Alan, we've got plum trees, an apple, a fig, a couple of olive trees and a vine. Plan to put in a couple of palms and plant out the terraces. You get a little light rain every evening around 6pm for half an hour apart from that it's blue skies from May to November. The weather system is ideal between the mountains and the sea. Football clubs, well you've got your choice from Serie A, Serie B up to a couple of hours away to Serie D which is Non League Ryman/BSS standard, we've adopted Civitonese in Serie D 50 minutes away, club is 100 yards from the Adriatic. Shots of espresso at half time and sitting across from the ultras during the game. They just lost out in the playoffs but in truth they aren't big enough to sustain promotion at the moment.

We grow grapevines, and figs successfully in sunny Romford but I don't feel confident enough to invest in an olive tree, also have two mature trachycarpus fortunei palm trees that I planted 30 odd years ago. My dream would be to grow citrus fruit but the climate and an alkaline soil put paid to that ambition. There's some amazing garden centres in Italy, so happy plant hunting seems assured. The best place I have ever been to for plants though must be the Singapore botanic gardens, where you can see bird nest ferns with fronds over a metre long growing on tree trunks, and orchids that are almost treated like weeds.

Agreed, but is anything better than sitting in the main square in Bruges sampling all those lovely trappist beers?

Much as I love drinking in both Belgium and Germany, in my opinion, the Italian Craft Beer scene is currently the most vibrant and exciting in Europe. They have no tradition to look back on and adhere to which gives them the opportunity to soak in ideas from all over the world and experiment with new ideas, often with stunning results.

I have indeed had a couple of beers from Birra Amarcord - albeit a few years ago. Indeed when I had their beers they were produced in San Marino.

Now I'm curious what you think of an austrian beer called Fohrenburg if you've tried one of their brews?

Unfortunately I haven't sampled their offerings - my drinking time in Austria has been very limited over the years (probably should do something about that...)

I'm honestly disappointed SJJ, you should fix this as I want your opinion. You should go to the brewery in Bludenz. It's my favourite beer but I'm always worried that I am biased!

They've certainly got an interesting looking range of beers. I shall keep an eye out for it!

I'd say that next time we're there I'd bring some back for you but I'd probably drink it. Maybe I'll try.

Shepherd and Neame brew a decent Swiss lager called hurlimann, which tastes better than most of the stuff brewed in Switzerland, probably get slaughtered for this, but my favourite beer of all time has to be Double Diamond draught.

You Won't get slaughtered by me, I loved Double Diamond.... Works Wonders!

They used to brew DD at the old Romford Brewery and when it shut down brewed it at Burton. It most definatly doesnt stunt your growth outwards, and I only wish I could find one that does

Lets get back to topic folks rather than discuss the demon drink which has been the ruin of so many lives. I see that Francois Hollande was officially sworn in today, the weather in Paris made ours seem tropical in comparison which could well be an omen for Hollande’s future tenure as French President:
