Herts Charity Shield, Round 1

Leverstock Green 2 Vs. 2 *Welwyn Garden City

Welwyn Garden City won 5-3 on penalties

Admission: £5

Attendance: 50-60

*Welwyn Garden City replaced Broxbourne in this match after Broxbourne dropped two divisions and, presumably, became ineligible for the competition.

This was my first match of the season and turned out to be quite a decent match - very decent for this early in the year. The first half was bland, but not boring. I feared for a time that the match would end 0-0 after the blandness continued into the second half, with neither team really imposing themselves on the game. However, Welwyn took the lead between 20 and 25 minutes, only to lose it straight away when Leverstock scored with a stunning goal from about twenty-seven yards. From there the game livened up and became end-to-end. Both teams had chances, but it looked like Welwyn would win it when they scored at about the 85 minute mark. It wasn't to end like that though as, once again, Welwyn failed to hold on and Leverstock equalised once more at 88 minutes. No extra time, so we went straight to penalties. Welwyn went first and scored, Leverstock missed their first and never recovered. Welwyn scored all five to win 5-3.

My first trip to Leverstock and not a bad little place. If I'd've known the 301 bus ran past the bottom of the road all the way to Stevenage I wouldn't have caught the train and walked the 2.9 miles from the station. I caught the bus home. Never mind, it was my own fault and I'll know for next time.

The ground is basic, yet tidy. Hardstanding all the way around, one seating area on the far side (from the entrance), but no other stand. Clubhouse comes complete with sofas, but I've no idea whether they're comfortable or not as I didn't linger. There's bucket loads of room for expansion/building new stands on three sides of the ground should the need ever arise

A very good result for Welwyn Garden City

I doubt Leverstock Green took the game that seriously

I'm sure Leverstock Green will be pleased with your comments Rhodes, just remind us all again what planet you are from?

Karen - So how come Leverstock Green lost then if they did take the game seriously

Surely if Levvy Green had not taken the game seriously it would of been a very easy 4 or 5 to Nil victory for The Citizens.

Not a narrow 2-2 draw and a victory in the lottery of a penalty shoot out.

Well done to all at WGC.

Of course we took it seriously, we are a good club that tries do to things properly both on and off the field. We have a new manager and only a bout 4 players from last season, so we have a new team too. WE are very happy with the progress of the team playing so nice flowing football.

It would appear not as they played a 'number of trialists and reserve players' according to their report:

Berkhamsted 3 Harpenden Town 2

A report on this one from another Forum:

Saturday 28 July 2012 – Herts Charity Shield – Attendance: tba

Berkhamsted (yellow and blue sleeves/blue/blue) 3 – 2 Harpenden Town (red/red/red)

Scorers: Berkhampsted (Calcutt 21, 33, Bunker 27) – Harpenden Town (tbc 47, tbc 67)

Pitch: well presented – Weather: dry, warm and sunny

Tabby set himself the task of haranguing Berkhamsted’s programme editor. He often sticks his paw in when it’s not required, but on this occasion his paper chase was triumphant and that was good news. Berkhamsted eased to a three goal lead by half-time with a double strike from Connor Calcutt and a single from Lawrence Bunker who hit a blockbuster, straight and just under the crossbar. Harpenden Town’s replies were both headers, not long after Tabby had declared that the visitor’s would not score. Tabby’s litter tray is now well lined with Berkhamsted football programmes. Star Man: Lawrence Bunker (Berkhamsted)

Café or Pub: Rising Sun P.H. Canalside, George Street, Berkhamsted (7/10)

* TT will provide the missing information in his report, expected anytime on Monday, unless anyone else can supply.

London Lions 4 Sawbridgeworth Town 1

A report on this one yesterday from another Forum:

Herts Charity Shield 1st Round

London Lions 4 (36, 40, 78 & 90+)

Sawbridgeworth Town 1 (19)

Att: 43 h/c KO: 1500 Cost: £5 inc 8 page prog. At clubhouse door I picked up a free copy of The Jewish News paper.

Venue: Maccabi Sports Ground, Rowley Lane, Arkley.

Fulled railed except for down side in far corner. No hardstanding although an area behind the near goal has some sort of matting. Near side has garage type building with 2 large doors & toxic signs. Next to this is a tiny shed & 2 lorry containers. The grass starts level but gradually goes up & is banked. Behind the far goal the banking starts high then goes down towards the other corner. These both have a dirt track with trees behind. I was very surprised to see a tiny bit of cover. Held up by scaffolding, a real diy job which has 3 rows of bench seating with a row at the front unattached. The far side has grass banking going away from the pitch down to the caged plastic floodlit pitch. A game was being played today which started at 1400 without a proper ref. Beyond this are views of trees & houses in the distance. The near goal has half of it with grass banking sloping down to the cricket pitch where a game was being played. Even further away were more sports facilities. The other half has the main car park with the clubhouse in the middle of it. The clubhouse looks onto the cricket pitch.

I was surprised to see in the programme that they will be playing league games here this season. I thought most leagues were making sure clubs are floodlit at step 6, the Spartan South Midlands obviously don't mind as London Lions are going the other way.
