Slough 1 Beaconsfield 2 AET

Sometimes you have to wonder that if the managment and players put as much effort into what goes on on the pitch as they do posting on forums, twitter and talking to the press bigging themselves up then we would have picked up 100 points.

However both management and players dont live up to their own hype.

A major change of staff both on and off the pitch is required as the current set up has gone sour.

Well done SYCOB you beat us fair and square with a budget vastly smaller than Sloughs.

Time for Steve Easterbrook to make the changes.

Well, yet another season in the Central Division looms!

Thought both teams were awful but one team had to win it.

I was amazed at how our style of play didn't adapt when it was clear very early on that SYCOB were going to park the bus by playing 1 up front, in attack we created absolutely nothing and when we eventually scored, the decision to get everyone behind the ball with the exception of Ben Abbey was catastrophic as the defeat proved.

I think the blame for how our performances have plummeted since the St Neots game can only rest at one man's door and that is the manager. Yet again, there was absolutely no motivation or inspiration from the bench!

I had a feeling this would happen tonight. Yes the players have been fantastic in getting us into the play offs yet again and finishing 2nd but now our ambitions are higher than previous seasons, to not get promoted this season isn't good enough!

Where we go from here I don't know, I'm normally gutted when we lose but after watching that performance tonight I'm not at all, I think we got we deserved in the end!

Have a great summer all, and hopefully here's to us finally gaining promotion next season!

Have to disagree CR.

From the other side of the pitch I could quite clearly hear SB shouting orders and trying to motivate the players.

It was a shocker of a game with only one shot on goal in 90 minutes (the penalty miss) but not surprised as these games are often turgid affairs.

Don't want to dwell on the game too much only to say we were 1-0 up with roughly 10 minutes of extra time left in a play-off semi-final with SYCOB not having a shot on goal in 110 minutes of play.

SYCOB get a corner and in something reminiscent of a Sunday morning kick-about we have defenders ambling to the near post with their backs to the play. This allows SYCOB acres of space to take a short corner from which they score. At such a crucial stage this was criminal defending and for me probably cost us a place in the final.

I think their should be a ban on postings directly after a game! As me and Gary House sat in glum silence driving to Gatwick i don't think we would have had very much positive to post after that terrible game of football. For whatever reason we have gone off the boil since St.Neots.

The one thing i would change next season is to give some of the youngsters a proper chance in the team.

Other than that all i can say is [****!!****], [****!!****], [censored]

As gutted as we all are we all know there are more important things in life, as we have found out during this season in particular

Ian has said so many times we hopefully will have our own ground to look forward to which is the main thing.

Aaron trust me no one will critisize Ben !

One day Burger and chips will say somehing nice !

Get well soon Stuart hope they looked after you ok up here.

Nathan my point is that first season we finished fifth on goals scored. Secod season we finished fourth qualifying for the play offs with a week or so to spare. Third season our play off spot was as good as secure by Christmas and we challenged for the title until April. Stick with SB and fourth season a realistic target is the title. Change and you have to give the new man a chance and a play off is the best you can expect.

A good example is Cardiff - Dave Jones repeatedly took them to the play offs and they sacked him. What has happened to them this season?

The best you can hope for from a football club is progresss year on year which is what SB is doing.

I hope he sticks with us and that he finishes the job next season. It would help if we all got behind them from the start and throughout.

Let me start by saying that i am gutted for all you Slough fans that you have fallen short of your seasons objective in getting promotion this year.I believe the second placed side should always be promoted and the league should not be turned into a cup competition. And it is even worse at this level !

Over the two game we played against each other ( both we lost) I had the pleasure in meeting a few of you Rebels, and from the conversations i had,You all felt it was a bit like "its now or Never" time.

I'm sure next season will prove to be more successfully. With any luck you Rebels will be gracing the Prem very soon.

If anything ( i feel) it was the Players that have let YOUR Club down and not the manager. The players discipline over the course of the season has been shocking.Plus i know Dennis reminded our players before our remaining games in his team talk, how they felt when Slough was shouting and banging the dressing room door after you beat us at home.Your players thought they had already won the league.Ironically the only other team to do that to us was Kings Lynn.and after that we never lost another game all season!

All the best for next season,And hope to see you at the HPCS in 16 months time !

Dave

I cannot accept all of these postings who say that by changing the mananger we write off a season. Last year SYCOB finished 22nd in the division and should have gone down. They were saved and this year are in the play-off final. Bedworth were struggling in the bottom half dozen all last season and this year they are in the play off final.

At this level you do not need to spend huge lengths of time building a squad as the above teams have shown. What Bedworth and SYCOB did was to get a new manager who brought in new, young players and added this to a sprinkling of experience. They didn't spend a fortune, they took a chance and backed their judgement. It worked.

If SB stays then he must re-evaluate his very conservative and inflexible way of setting up his squad and his team. He can sometimes make changes, but if they don't work he won't change it again. But usually we get the same as we had last time. If you always do what you always did, you always get what you always got. If SB cannot see his way to change his ways, then the club has to decide if it wants the same again.

Couldn't agree more, Rebel Yeller. However being a man who can see both sides of the coin,I also recognise the value of keeping Steve Bateman for 1 to 2 more seasons.

With due respect RY you've picked a couple of examples where the neccessity to change managers i.e. finishing bottom and near the bottom of the league prompted the change in managers. They just happened to have struck it lucky with those changes. There are plenty of examples where teams continually change manager after manager and I think our past proves we are prime examples of that.

SB has continued to improve us over the last 3 seasons and with some changes in player personnel I really think we can go all the way next season.

I won't say too much as everyone probably wants to forget tonight but just wanted to say I agree with Aaron and you've probably got to put reactions into perspective of a game that just finished hours ago - I'm a United fan, and after Monday night I'd have happily shipped out half the squad but on reflection it was just fine margins that made a difference (Even City dropped silly points where you wouldn't expect but that's why we love football!) You guys have got to be proud of your team - the points haul of over two points a game is Championship form and you were unlucky to come up against a side with the likes of Stefan Moore and that Junior kid in CM this season! After all Hitchin got 100 odd points the other season and missed out, but sorted it the next year!

The boys fought until the end and Bates would have done his best to prepare the boys for this game, playoffs are a lottery and on the night we eventually got the rub of the green. Having been in the camp I know you guys make a difference to the players so stay singing from the same hymn sheet and here's hoping next year's your season!

Special thanks to the fans who clapped us off tonight, appreciated the great sportmanship!

You Charlie Mpi were a thorn in the Slough Town's defence all evening, you caused their fullbacks all sorts of problems when you got the ball in advanced positions. I can't believe they let you go.

I would just like to point out that while my post last night was a bit heat of the moment, I do not wish to see a change in management and will back Steve Bateman all the way. My point was that the close season tends to lead to a bit of uncertainty - there was talk a couple of years ago that he would leave after we failed in the playoffs against Chesham, but fortunately he stuck with us.

I do however think some people are right regarding freshening up the team though, changing a few players and bringing in some of the youth players.

Talking about the point of playing at SYCOB, I have heard that Steve had been having trouble getting players to sign on again to play on that pitch, so if that is the case maybe we need to seriously look at our options during the close season.

Have to agree with you about the goal as we were actually saying exactly that as it was happening. Two players totally switched off running away from the ball with their backs to it at such a crucial stage. Very poor defending cost Slough Town at that corner.

And a good number of Premier division club treasurers will be disappointed by Slough's failure..

A neutrals view....................

158. Thursday 3 May 2012 – Southern 1st Central (Play-off Semi-final)

Slough Town (amber & navy/navy/amber) 1 – 2 Beaconsfield SYCOB (red & white quarters/black/red) 0-0 after 90 minutes – Attendance: 370

Slough Town got precisely what they deserved – nothing, after an abject display against their landlords. Slough Town started with five defenders and contributed nothing to the game. The only thing Beaconsfield SYCOB gave them was an 85th minute penalty, which Slough Town missed. Up to the 90 minute mark, neither team had troubled either goalkeeper, except for the penalty save by Michael Power-Simpson. Beaconsfield SYCOB seemed to have Slough Town under wraps, as the game was drifting towards penalties. However, Slough Town went ahead two minutes before the extra time change of ends and tried to play out for time. Beaconsfield SYCOB caught them, as Slough Town conceded a penalty and Nevin Saroya showed them how a penalty should be taken. With Slough Town feeling sorry for themselves, Lee Barney scored Beaconsfield SYCOB’s last-gasp winner. It seems the Southern League has set a dangerous precedent by allowing this game to be played without Slough Town completing their league fixtures. I believe Slough Town had threatened the league that if they were forced to play the outstanding game they would have fielded only eight players. Lastly, I watched this game with two players from Hendon FC and enjoyed genial conversation with the men in green. Star Man: Michael Power-Simpson (Beaconsfield SYCOB)

As a tactician he sucks but is a very good man-manager and attracts players of experience.Hopeless at moulding young players, though.

The problem with Steve is exactly how you call it Rebel Yeller.

I just cannot see Steve Easterbrook changing this likeable, personable manager, regardless of his footballing failings and so us football theorists will have to put up with more of the same for good awhile yet.

As gutted as i am to lose in the play-offs for a 3rd season in a row, i think we should 100% stick with Steve Bateman. As somebody pointed out even if we have lost in the play-offs 3 seasons in a row, our league position has improved season by season and until that stops we should stick with SB !! As for next season i think we are easily capable of winning the title and finally getting into the southern prem ! Defo a Top 2 finish (Pref 1st of course) Onwards and Upwards !

Where was Jerome Anderson and Ollie Burgess last night? Both could have made a difference whether starting or from the bench. Are they injured?

Surprised Aaron Eales posted on this thread, when he's only played 5 minutes of football all season. Was it worth him signing?

We should never have let Charlie Mpi go but Steve Bateman just didn't know how best to play him and favoured Danny Burnell and Sean Sonner over him.The same as we're currently doing with Jerome. Two short-sighted mistakes IMO.

Slough's current squad doesn't need massive change but it does need to add some younger players and pace from midfield to attack and won't be successful till they update their laboured, slow playing style. We should also have that illusive target man for certain matches.
