Guernsey FC v Bedfont Sports, Saturday 24th March, 3pm, Footes Lane.

Recommended Posts

I was hoping to make a mad last minute dash to go to this game but something (good) has come up so I wasn't able to make it. I'm sure it will be a terrific game, the two best teams in the league going head to head in a championship decider. Great stuff. And in addition to the quality, these are two of the friendliest clubs I've met this season so I really wish the best to both of them! May the best team win.

Today's the day !

Really excited about this match and hoping as you can imagine for a Green Lions win !

I think the size of the occation will be too much for the young sports players and Guernsey wil get a good start and the Sports will be chasing the game after the break.

One question if Guernsey Wrap it up today will they lift the trophy ?

Guernsey FC 7 Bedfont Sports 1

GFC starting team: Tardif, Mackay, Cochrane, Strawbridge, McKenzie, Black, Bradford, Heaume, Loaring, Rihoy, Allen.

Subs: J. Winch, de Garis, Dyer, Isabelle, Dodd

Brilliant start to the match with a 25 yard free-kick from Ryan Zico Black, unstoppable free-kick into the top corner of the net, 1-0 Green Lions after just 3 minutes. Despite conceding an early goal Bedfont got back into the match after 15 mins, when Kamani scored from inside the 6 yard box, after Guernsey failed to clear the ball. Matt Loaring fired Guernsey into 2-1 lead, when he struck home from a free kick swung in from the right wing.

Bedfont, knowing full well that they had to win this match, started the better of the teams in the second half, but it was Guernsey who struck the vital blow when Dom Heaume scored to put the Green Lions into a 3-1 lead. This goal really knocked the stuffing out of Bedfont and within two minutes they went further behind when Dave Rihoy converted and made it 4-1. A sublime volley from Dom Heaume made it 5-1 and the crowd were on their feet, roaring on their team to finish the game in style. There was no way back for Bedfont who, to their credit, continued to push forward, but it was Glyn Dyer in the 89th minute who made it 6-1, leaving the Green Lions 'goal machine', Ross Allen to put the icing on the cake, as he struck home the 7th, deep into injury time.

GFC substitutions - Glyn Dyer and Jamie Dodd on for Scott Bradford and Ollie McKenzie 58 mins

GFC substitution - Jason Winch replaces Dave Rihoy 67 mins

CROWD - RECORD CROWD - 2143

Fantastic, historic day for Guernsey FC as they are crowned Combined Counties Division 1 champions, after an entertaining, attacking display against their nearest rivals, second placed Bedfont Sports. Great atmosphere down at Footes Lane this afternoon, record crowd, absolutely brilliant for the fans.

Special mention for our UK Green Army who travelled over from the mainland and never stopped singing from the time they entered the stadium to the time they left, take a bow, you were truly inspirational.

What a magnificant first season this has been, promoted as champions and the style you have done it in, it is a real credit to to all at Guernsey FC and Channel Island football.

Many congratulations Tony Vance and Colin Fallaize, you have done a brilliant job in managing these lads.

Enjoy your celebrations, you fully deserve all the accolades coming your way.

The fans will be back again next Friday, that is for sure.

WHY O WHY,Did the C.C.L. not read Smudge's Hymn Book, and take over the Div 1 Trophy yesterday.A great publicity coup, but alas no one ever takes notice of dear old Smudge. You were all pre- warned in June last year, that it was Turkeys voting for Xmas.WELL DONE GUERNSEY!!!!!!!!BY THE WAY I KNOW FOOK ALL ABOUT FOOTBALL,BUT STILL IN THE LATER YEARS OF LIFE,COULD MAKE A BETTER JOB OF MANAGEMENT THAN MANY AT THIS LEVEL,WHO IS WILLING TO TAKE A CHANCE?

Apparently the reason was down to cost...when bringing the trophy over they have to have three or four people with the trophy. Not sure why it needs so many but that's the reason. Wonder who pays for all of this....?

But I agree it was a bit of a anti-climax not not have the trophy presented to the 2,000+ crowd that was there.

That was what I was told yesterday. Happily to stand corrected. :)

I thought there was some logic to that, as I am sure various officials of the league would need to be in attendance to present the trophy?

I assumed that the comment meant the four required to bring the trophy were of a security nature, rather like when the FA Cup is displayed throughout the country? I am a bit surprised nobody from the league took the trophy to present to Guernsey FC. Maybe a ploy to get you all to the annual dinner?
