Sjj2112 - It has never really been the same at Hertingfordbury Park since Horace and HTFCew left has it and I gather Horace regularly put his hand in his pocket:

Not nice reading for a fellow local club. Hope they get some support. With 2 senior teams and a strong youth section, I'm surprised more people don't offer their services. Our committee is huge, very lucky to have so many pairs of hands. So important at this level

I wasn't expecting to see that. I've watched Hertford a few times over the years & i've always enjoyed it. Hope things get sorted, it's too good a club to go under & potentially a town the size of Hertford could support a Ryman club or even higher.

hertford are a good club with great fans and some lovely people. All was looking up for the club after the end to last season but sadly a chairman came in and Scott O'd was allowed to leave, since that point its been all downhill! crowd numbers have dropped and there are very few local players left, with many moving on or just quitting. Its a tough area with clubs like Ware, cheshunt, harlow and potters bar near by in the ryman league and St mags, hoddesdon, broxbourne, wodson and wgc in the spartan league!

Hertford as a area also has an excellent rugby club which is well supported. It would be very sad should they not get through this trouble and im sure those at the club will ensure it surrives. Perhaps a knight in shinig armour is required!!

Have followed the Blues for around 23-24 years (ie since the Fairclough days) - been an expat for the last 20 (years) so only get to watch around 3 games a season. The feeling of going back to the Park after many months (preferably via the Black Horse for a couple of pints of Abbot Ale) is always something that I look forward to - and it's true to say that there is always a slight feeling of doubt as to the future of the club at the back of my mind ...

Attendances are OK from what i can see - can't see any real change from previous years - at my last game (Harringay at home) there were 111 fans - which is pretty good for the club's position in the league - and the last 2 gates of 80-90 also seem OK.

The Rugby club play in Nat2S (ie level 4 compared to level 9 for the Blues) - so in theory are a bigger attraction (and average 350 in their fight to avoid relegation), But the ground is in Ware (a short brisk uphill walk from Ware Station)- so I doubt if they are taking fans away from the Blues.

I see the Mercury article as a "cry for help" - it is correct that some people who have put in endless hours for the club are no longer able to do so (in the real world employment/families come first - football second - unfortunately ;) ). Hopefully new people will come forward to ease the burden on the guys who are keeping the club going. A new chairman would be nice as well - it's understandable that some chairman will want to gain publicity for themselves as well as helping the club -(fair enough) but - IMO there has been a bit too much emphasis on the former by one of the more recent occupants of this position (mentioning no names of course !). I have to be optimistic that the club will attract more people to come forward and help out - fingers crossed ...

Apologies if this seems like a novel but due to the recent publication and having stepped away from the bubble and the forum I fancied voicing an opinion.....

Hertford Town wont fold I can assure you of that...there are too many people who wont let that happen. The club is struggling at the moment, both on the pitch and more importantly off it. They have people currently on the board who are very passionate about the club and do a lot of hard work for the club. The committee, rightly so, are very wary of new people/chairmen attempting to take over the club, mainly cos of their previous experiences, however, the downside to this and I dont intend to insult anyone but....just because some people have the best interests of a club at heart and they work very hard to ensure that that club survives, this doesnt mean that they are the best people to drive the club forward. Every club needs people who are prepared to give up their own time to help out and without these people local clubs wouldnt survive, however, as I state above, they dont necessarily have the footballing nous or sales acumen to drive the club on. The problem HTFC has, is that like a lot of clubs the decisions are made via the vote of the committee and therefore anyone who is prepared to come in and invest money has to be prepared to have decisions made via this vote and then if they want to push on with something they have to ensure that they have the backing of the majority vote. At the moment there are a small number on the committee and a core group who basically all vote together which in theory means that any new people could struggle to implement their ideas...this is a reason why some people who were on the committee or were helpers are no longer prepared to muck in..plain and simple they dont agree with the running/decisions at the club. It is a difficult situation and the people at the club are nice people, they work hard and therefore expect to make decisions for the club, they think they are doing what is right for the club etc but in my opinion you need football people to run a football club and people who can raise money and unfortunately this is where Hertford are lacking at the moment.

With regards to on the pitch, as part of the manager's union I cant comment on this, but a problem HTFC has is that a lot of their players now travel from afar. There are only 3/4 local players who are still there from the previous regime, whether this is a good thing or not is a matter of opinion, however, the problem lies that the fans dont really relate to the new players because they see new faces every week and also these players dont socialise in the bar after a game. You could argue that what happens on the pitch is the important fact but everyone knows that local clubs like Hertford need to turn over a pound note behind the bar to ensure that bills are paid etc etc. I am told the club has lost its identity which is disappointing.

As a former Hertford manager, I do feel sad at reading the article that started this thread off..however I do know through ex-players, current players, ex-board members and from my own experience that the club will never fold....

I was asked to return to the club as manager by certain committee members after the "chairman" left earlier in the season, but a majority voted against me.....judging by the monies I raised for the club to bring them out of debt, the fact that we won "team of the month" last April and that fact we finished 8th in the league with no budget...my guess is the reason it was chucked out at vote was because I voice my opinions and say what I think...now the committee made their decision that day and I would imagine :) that a lot of the negative voters are still sitting on the committee now....judging by the league table and the article in the paper it seems things have not progressed quite like they would have hoped.....what is that saying?? they made their bed...now they can lie in it :) ...but the real problem is a catch 22...people may be prepared to help out but would the committee be prepared to loosen their reins or if not, will new investors/helpers be prepared to let them continue to drive the club.....watch this space....au revoir.

F*ck me Chinola... you like a comma don't you!

But all of the commas seem to be in the right place to me! As a former chairman of said club I have to say that there's a lot of truth in what Chinola says. Democracy is all very well so long as it leads to the appointment of an effective leader (chairman in this context). Doesn't work when everyone is equal.
