Chelsea v Slough Town F A Youth Cup Round 2 1 Dec. 1973

Recommended Posts

While rooting around for information for my set of player profiles I turned up the team sheet (priced at 1p) for this match. It was played on a cold Saturday morning at a near deserted Stamford Bridge which at that time resembled a building site owing to the construction of the then gigantic new East Stand. IIRC Chelsea won one-nil. I am not sure that all the players' surnames were recorded correctly and have indicated with a ? some possible corrections for the Slough Town team.

Chelsea

Derek Richardson, Sorensen, John Sparrow, Ray Lewington, Steve Wicks, S MacDonald, Bolton, Brian Bason, Ray Wilkins, Teddy Maybank, Clive Walker.

Slough Town

F Ellis, Martin Brown, ?Jerry O'Brien, ?Tim Smith, Mick East, ?George Burbridge, T Mulvany, M Quinn, Eugene Bissett, Bobby Horastead, G Sweetzer, sub C Toombs.

KGB - I think I can help you fill in the missing names as I was the Slough Town Youth Team Manager then and my Assistant was Kevin Macabe.

Frank Ellis

Martin Brown

Jerry O'Brien

Ray Smith

Mick East

George Burbridge

Tim Mulvaney

Martin Quinn

Eugene Bissett

Bobby Horastead

Gordon Sweetzer

Colin Toombs

They were all Slough boys and represented their Town and Club with distinction - I still have the pewter mug the players presented to me after our earlier victory in the FA Youth Cup against Fulham; we drew 1-1 at Craven Cottage and came back to the Dolphin to record a memorable 3-2 victory in the replay with Martin Quinn scoring twice. Let me know KGB if you would like the team photo to put up on the website.

Thanks, Bob. Very good to have seen you earlier this season.

I think I might be right in assuming that Gary or Tom, or whoever can upload stuff on to the website, would welcome the opportunity to post a photo of that team. It must have been a very interesting day to have been manager.

It is very helpful to have the authoritative version of the players' full names as it highlights one of the temptations encountered when trying to piece together historic information from limited sources. For example, I knew we had a first team player called Tim Smith just after this time and so assumed that it must have been the same player in this team-but evidently not. There may well be similar errors in our other archive material but we can only hope to rectify them bit by bit if people come forward to help. It does occur to me that Roy Merryweather should know a lot about players from the late 50's onwards.

David Hillier (aka Kaiser Gibbs Batman).
