Guernsey FC v Westfield, Saturday 11th February - match report.

Guernsey FC squad: Chris Tardif, Paul de Garis, Simon Geall, Sam Cochrane, Jamie Dodd, Tom Strawbridge, Ollie McKenzie, Jason Winch, Ryan Zico Black, Angus Mackay, Scott Bradford, Dom Heaume, Glyn Dyer, Matt Loaring, Dave Rihoy, Ross Allen.

Jacques Isabelle - suspended for this game.

Westfield FC squad: Mike Brawley,Jamie Doble, Nick McGregor, Andy King, Charlie Newman, Craig Woodley, Tom Hegarty, Andrew Wright, Shane Cheeseman, Lee Allum, Mark Tyler, Matt Edwards, Damien Panter, Rob Jones, Ricky Hogsden, Luke Beale, Daryn Hennessy.

Game 27 of a 34 league game season and 8th placed Westfield FC provide the opposition for this home game.

Tony Vance may well express concern over the possibility of his team underestimating the visitors as the Green Lions relentlessly continue to amass the points at the top of the Combined Counties Division 1 table.

Westfield have a far better away record than their home record, winning 8 games, drawing 1 and losing 4 games, having scored 27 and conceded 20.

The weather may well play a big part in this weekend's fixtures which are of great interest to the top of the table situation with Bedfont Sports v Staines Lammas and Spelthorne Sports v Hartley Wintney fixtures being played as well.

Guernsey FC 4 Westfield 2

Guernsey got off to an excellent start when Dom Heaume slotted in from close range after only 2 minutes, after some excellent build up play.

The Green Lions went further ahead when Ross Allen, who now gets very tightly marked by visiting defences, broke free and slotted in the 2nd goal.

Despite being two goals down Westfield were not allowing Guernsey to dominate them and in the 34th minute they beat Tardif in the Guernsey goal, but the shot hit the post. Half-time Guernsey FC 2 Westfield 0

1st half stats: Free-kicks - GFC - 5 WFC - 6, Shots on target - GFC - 6 WFC - 6, Shots off target - GFC - 4, WFC - 4, Corners - GFC 4 WFC - 1

Although Guernsey were very much in control in the early periods of the second half they struggled to get the ball into the last third of the pitch.

The substitution of Scott Bradford for Dave Rihoy in the 63rd minute had the desired effect and within 2 minutes of coming on Dave put Guernsey into a 3-0 lead, finishing off a flowing move with a sweet strike into the corner of the net. Further chances came and Zico Black smashed one against the bar in the 69th minute. Rather than continue to pile on the pressure for the visitors, exactly the opposite happened.

Within 4 minutes, Westfield, to their credit went up the field and scored two goals and the game took on a totally different picture. Sloppy defending by the Guernsey defence allowed Luke Beale (70) and Tom Heggarty (73) to bring the score to 3-2. The crowds nerves were certainly jangling at this stage but substitute Dave Rihoy netted again in the 75th minute to restore a two goal lead for the Green Lions.

Matt Loaring came on for 81st minute for Glyn Dyer and Dave Rihoy was prevented from scoring a hat-trick by the Westfield keeper pushing his shot onto the bar in the 86th minute.

2nd half stats: free-kicks - GFC - 5 WFC - 4, Shots on target - GFC - 5 - WFC3, Shots off target - GFC - 8 WFC - 1, Corners - GFC - 4 WFC - 1

Man of the Match - Sam Cochrane (Guernsey)

Crowd - 1103

No cautions or sending off.

Yet another 3 points for Guernsey FC on a day where their fixture was the only one played in the Combined Counties.

Tony Vance will be delighted with the 3 points but will have some concern over the two goals that were scored quickly against them.

Guernsey FC 4 Westfield FC 2

We appeared to be crusing to a win at 3-0 up with goals from Heaume, Allen and Rihoy but Westfield weren't going to lie down and got it back to 3-2 with goals from Luke Beale and Tom Heggarty. But a goal from Dave Rihoy knocked the wind out of Westfields sails and Guernsey FC had a comfortable end to the game.

Both sides had a few golden chances to score throughout the match. Westfield hit the post and Glyn Dyer could have had a hat trick on another day. Zico Black also hit the bar with a 30 yard effort.

Another 3 points, very happy :D

Thought this was one of e best games of the season. Guernsey took a decent lead and then a great fight back by Westfield. Some very good goals so well worth a watch on channel tv.

Just like to say how well Westfield conducted themselves, they worked very hard for 90 minutes and did not feel the need to roll on the floor feigning injuries. Their second goal was a cracker!

Also a word for the referee, thought he was very good, could have booked a couple of players but he used his man management skills to keep control. Smudge will be pleased with him too for quite obvious reasons....

It was a real pleasure to see and I was among many fans to applaud Westfield and the Referee(s) off the pitch at the end. An entertaining fast free flowing match with no theatricals. People fell down but they got up again. A great afternoon's entertainment.

Lewis was given the first Heroes amongst us award by GFC, his prize being a pair of flights anywhere on the network from Aurigny airlines. He was a very popular winner and was a guest of honour for the day. He was presented with his award by our Patron and The Bailiff of Guernsey ( head of our government) Sir Geoffrey Rowland (also a keen supporter and regular fan)

Lewis Laine, 91

Lewis has been a member of St Martin’s football club since 1969 – he began his time at the club as gateman but soon became much more than that. For each match at Blanche Pierre Lane, every St Martin’s player arrives to find their kit hung pristinely in the dressing room as if they were a premiership player; this is not just for the top flight Priaulx league players, but the juniors, ladies and veterans too. Lewis can be seen at the club every day taking on any number of self-imposed tasks such as; cleaning and hoovering the bar and dressing room areas, emptying rubbish bins and tidying the grounds, washing the kit and stocking the bar. Ask any St Martin’s player or club member and they’ll tell you that ‘Lewis is a legend at the lane’. Lewis has received a county and regional award from the Football Association for his services to grassroots football and was in a shortlist of six for the national award.

dorking were 2-1 up at half time against old hamptonians

final score

old hamptonians 3 dorking fc 4!

courtesy bjr who will surely expand later....

Not sure I like the expansion bit, Jeff !

I'll await Bucks official report.

It was certainly cold in the 2nd half. I walked over the 3G pitch and was impressed, as were most of our players. Thanks to the ground-staff who cleared the surface in the morning.

It's nice to say that the three officials were GREAT, (especially the 'Short Silver Fox', Steve, Natch), Nothing like a bit of good old banter between him and our Hon Sec and our bench-staff.

Old Hamptonians are certainly a very good side. I could easily see them competing in the CCL Prem.

Really proud of the lads – we gave that a hell of a go. Got to admit when they scored after 90 seconds and shortly afterwards we feared the worst but we kept creating chances and were really unlucky not to score first half.

Second period we decided to not pick up Zico Black and let them worry about us and it worked a treat as Hennessy started pulling the strings. We went close on a few occasions but the game appeared to be over when Guernsey got a fortunate third. To our credit we kept going and were rewarded when Luke Beale slid home after a great move. We scored again shortly afterwards when Tom Hegarty curled home an absolute beauty and the game was there for the taking as they were on the rack. However as everyone knows they have the firepower to get them out of trouble and Rihoy smashed home an unbelievable finish to seal the game. Great show from our guys and thought Charlie Newman did an excellent job marking Ross Allen.

Off the pitch you’re looked after very well. Everything superbly organised and everyone very friendly and welcoming (and that includes the young ladies out on a night out) Still can’t figure out why there are still some anti-Guernsey people on here.

still see the old dig Kroonz.

Must say after talking to a couple of their directors they do conduct themselves well - theres been a couple of incidents away from home which have happened but not one word was mentioned on here or any moaning from them. When you take into account some of the trivial things on here certain people bitch and moan at about other clubs it does show their class

Would just like to add how well your players conducted themselves, may have lost but they can all feel rightly proud of themselves. Deserved their applause as they came off the pitch. Even your goals were applauded by the Home support.

Just hope your boys have not left any presents that will materalise in nine months! :)

Just to reiterate what NLN has already said, the whole package is very well organised and a credit to the club and island as a whole! I don't think there is anything that they hadn't got covered and are a great team on and off the pitch.

Despite the result I felt we gave Guernsey a very good game and in the end it came down to which side was more clinical with their finishing. As HKP said it was nice to see both our goals applauded and recognised for the good goals which they were.

The only downside for me (if you can even call it that) was my 5.20am start when it was still -10c in Windsor, which made it a long day before the game has even started.......luckily I was on the bench so I could have a nap!

Are you staying at the Vason Bay Hotel, beautiful place, excellent beach and surfing facilities.

Smudge I stayed at a place called la grande mare even had its own golf course, went for a nice walk on Sunday along the vazon

And ended up at cobo village could not get me usual Sunday paper as it was not on the plane so had to settle for something else.

Walked back to the hotel and had a cup of tea and a bacon sarnia at the vazon kiosk although it was not much of a kiosk as it was

Being rebuilt it was just some long caravan type things (the food was top notch) lots of bikers were here so must have been a regular meeting point.

Did not get to taste a bean jar maybe next time, weather was very cold and dull not like Saturday at all.
