Whats the going rate of a groundsman?

Recommended Posts

its a bit like how long is a bit of string. if your paying a person to do a job, you would negotiate first. how many pitches is it, just cut, who marks them. was at bedfont at some point this season, and saw mr white marking traing pitch. as nuts would tell, there is more to being a groundsman than cutting grass.

It all depends on how much work you are expected to do, ie what is on the contract and your qualifications.

To be the curator of a quality football ground, on a full time basis, you should expect to earn a minimum of £25k pa I would have thought.

At Brentford FC for example, there is the main ground and the training ground at Osterley so I would expect the salary to be higher.

Assistant groundsman earn from about £15k pa.

I have a summer contract at Sutton Cricket Club (1st March to 30th September) as assistant to the main contractors and work on both of our grounds.

These quotes are from Crystal Palace groundsman, Mark Perrin in January 2011.

Pay Ground staff are paid around £15,000 for a starting salary up to £42,000 – more for high-profile sporting venues.

Hours Core hours are 8am-5pm Monday-Friday. "On match days we will do roughly 8am-6.30pm. Night matches we work through until 10.30pm. I try to ensure that staff reclaim some of those hours, or the working week would always exceed 50 hours."

Work-life balance "Can be badly biased towards work. Last summer I came in nearly every Saturday. In recent years I have made an effort to maintain a more realistic balance."

Highs "You get a distinct 'buzz'. It was very rewarding when we were in administration, working with little resources and the threat of redundancy to ensure fixtures took place."

Lows "Games being called off due to the weather – it's a sickening feeling."
