3-0 Down, 4-3 Win?!?!

You missed a thriller, Matt. But never mind, I'm sure the official website will have a four line summary later tonight that will extol the courageous way Canvey fought back from certain defeat. There's bound to be ball by ball commentary of the first half fiasco of sending in repeated high balls, over the top of the non-existent midfield, only to see the giants in the Dover defence clear every one.

I'm sure that no punches will be pulled in describing the way Canvey gifted two goals to the visitors, one following a mis-hit by the usually reliable Danny Potter (don't worry, later saves made up for this lapse) and then later a mis-head by defensive supremo Gavin Cowan.

The penalty that never was will be highlighted and perhaps a personal comment from the match reporter on the myopic qualities of the referee, who was the only person on the Island who didn't see the fist come up from the melee of players and push the ball away.

But then the webmaster will wax lyrical about the second half, especially the last half hour, when Canvey changed from the 'lob it and hope' tactic (that has never worked in all the years I have been watching them) and instead, starting playing ball to feet. This had a dramatic effect on the way the game was going. Suddenly (the match report will tell you - but in summary) Canvey were running things. Dover had no answer to the beautiful way Minton, Boylan, JK et al were pushing the ball around (they might even quote 'sexy football' as a bit of plagiarism never does any harm) in a way that was electrifying.

The final paragraph will try to sum up the electric atmosphere as Canvey took the lead, the home fans went delirious and the Dover fans went quiet.

Quite a job for the official match reporter on the official site, but it will be worth the hours of drafting, typing, editing and publishing, I'm sure. And photos too, I bet, just like the old days.

I can't wait.

How the hell did we get away with that? Unbelievable! Credit to the lads for never giving up but at times we were quite appalling especially in defence.

Gav Cowan had a complete nightmare!

Going out in a minute, will write more later!

Cant believe what I have just seen!!!We play terrible for an hour then rip them to pieces for the last half an hour. So nice to send those horrible Dover fans and players home gutted, they were the most obnoxious fans i have seen at Canvey and their goalie raising his arms aloft to the Canvey fans after their 3rd went in, well we had the last laugh, roll on the draw on Monday.

To be honest the Dover fans were no worse than any other large contingent of fans we have had at Park Lane. We get the same old s..t from opposition supporters all the time but it was nice to see a large gathering of away support rather than the usual one man and a dog that the likes of Ford and Northwood bring.

Right. as for the game itself we were terrible for the first 55 minutes or so. The defence was all over the place., the midfield unable to stamp its authority on the game although Dobbo was trying hard and the attack finding Dover difficult to break down.

When the third went in, it seemed all over and to be honest we wouldn't have had any comnplaints.

Luckily for us Minton scored soon after that and it seemed to galvanise us. For a 10 minute spell, Dover were really struggling but they seemed to weather the storm and as we approached the last 15 minutes or so, we were facing a uphill task.

Another Minton goal once again gave us some impetus just when we were flagging and Dover completely collapsed as we pushed forward.

Boylan scored a penalty almost immediately and the stage was set for a last gasp bundled Minton effort just when a draw seemed likely.

Have to admit we were very lucky to get through. Dover worked hard and deserved their lead but Canvey over the years have made an art of the dramatic comeback. They don't know when they are beaten and credit must be given for a brave and spirited fightback.

Was the comeback down to Berquez and McDougald being brought on? They were certainly a handful once they were on.

After this maybe it's our year in the cup!

Seems you weren't the only one to miss this game Matt (as well as Ian, of course). There were only 528 people at Park Lane which, if you include the 100 or so who came up from Dover, means that only just over 400 home fans turned up for this one.

When are the people of Canvey going to get behind the team? There should have been at least 650-700 customers for this one. During the second half I expected to see about 350 Canvey fans on the north terrace, 150 or so visitors at the sea-wall end, 50 others standing on the dug-out side and then about 125 in the main stand/outside the changing rooms area. That would have given a total of 675 - much more realistic, in my opionion.

I wonder why so many stayed away?

But you notice it's only for the FA Cup games where the money is split between the Home team, Away team and FA?

REMEMBER! Carshalton got suspect last year of us 'fixing' our FA Cup attendance after we played them and they reported us!!!

If we're doing it again and we get caught, we could get fined, points deducted or kicked out the competition and the prize money being given to Dover!

Now we don't want that do we?

Seemed a lot more there than 528. Our highest crowd of the season was 613 for Heybridge and there seemed to be around 50-100 more than that one.

I remember the Carshalton game last season. It was in the Trophy rather than the FA Cup and I think the official figure was something like 325, when it seemed like there was about 500 in the ground.

I don't like to make stupid accusations but I remember when we played Stafford a couple of seasons back in the FA Cup 4th QR. Stafford brought a fair bit of support down and the crowd seemed quite healthy in the region of about 700/800. I think the official figure was quoted as 550.

Makes you wonder if a load of people are getting in for free and not being added to the attendance!!

Would be very nice indeed and would attract a very large crowd but I think we want a nice easy home draw!

I think they've got a point about the crowd size though. Maybe not the figures that Dover were quoting but the crowd did seem well in excess of 600. Dover are also quoting they bought just over 160 supporters to Park Lane.

Oh well suppose we'll never know. Maybe those Dover supporters found a hole in the fence or something. Mingling with those asylum seekers they must have learned a few tricks or two!!
