If you get anyother ref to inspect the pitch other than the match referee then he cannot actually call a game off. what he can do is advise the match referee as to the state of the pitch at the time he looks at it. It is then down to the Match Referee to decide if the game can get called off. So perhaps as the pitch was fine at 4.30 and there was talk of the temp only falling to -2 by 9.30 as said above the match referee thought he could get the game on ?

This is always a difficult one and there are moans if it is called off too early but complaints if there is a late postponement.

Found it strange this one though as it was -2 at 15:30 so the chances of the match happening were slim at best

It must've been very frustrating, but imagine the reaction if it would've been a difficult surface to play on or worse, a player gets injured due to the surface? Then all complaints would've been fired right at the official.

 

Tough call all round, but with the weather predictions often correct, maybe the fixture list should've been postponed at the weekend/Monday morning?

 

Good thing is that next week looks very mild and better weather coming ;)

True ;) Although my birthday is late April and remember a few years back it snowed for a couple of days over my birthday!

Just to clarify. The pitch was looked at quite early in the day, and worked on by the groundsman all morning. It was deemed as being playable at noon, with a pitch inspection scheduled for 4.30. I actually went down just after 3pm and the pitch was perfect and it had been prepared for the game. It was sunny and breezy and there seemed no doubt about the game going ahead. Considering it was a "lake" the day before, the efforts of our groundsman were admirable. The inspection at 4.30 only confirmed what I had seen and it was on. I don't know where it was -2 at 15.30, as I was there in a shirt and tie and it was quite pleasant. The local BBC forecast was that it would go down to zero at around 7pm, with a further drop to -2 by 9pm. I arrived at the ground at 5pm and it was again perfect for football. The MVSCR kit man arrived around 6pm and we had a chat, and he even went on the pitch and commented that it was fine, which it was. The referee arrived about 6.15 and by then it was a bit crispy on top but, even then, he was of the view we would go ahead with the game.

What I would say is that the wind really picked up from about 6pm and the "chill factor" kicked in. Also, the temperature was quite clearly dropping well below the levels indicated on the BBC website and we knew there was now potential for a problem. I was just about to put the full lights on at 7pm and the referee called me and Darren on to the pitch and pointed out some specific areas he had concerns with and the long term prospects of the game being played. He did ask our views, to be fair, and I asked him if the game would be finished in his opinion. He was 100% adamant the game would not finish, so we all agreed there was no point even starting on that basis.

A lot of hard work went into attempting to get the game played, but these efforts were scuppered by the conditions, which was a real shame.

Our lads trained on the pitch until about 8.15, but it was the correct decision to call it off.

Also, fair play to the officials, who all took only £10 each to cover their expenses on the night, which was appreciated by the club.

Let's hope for better luck for everyone this weekend.
