Top ten post war (1945) SML teams

Recommended Posts

Surely Hoddesdon Town must figure on the list, although no titles in the top flight they do have an impressive list of trophies won.

In a personal opinion with regards to South Midlands football (prior to the merger with the Spartan League) I would have Barton Rovers and Selby high on the list of most successful sides.

I played for selby in my early days and then under laird budge in the good side around late 80s early 90s played with and against some very good players, Laird enjoyed much success as selby manager , i was gutted when selby folded , the reason we folded was our main "sponsor" pulled out , as has happened to many teams since ,i played in selbys last game but i cannot remember who it was against !!

Did you play with the big fella Easterbrook(?) and another big lump up front Arnie something? The manager went onto manage Hatfield in the South mids their first time round. My old telling me about a big Barnet after a Winslow Selbey game two sent off for both sides after the game. What was the pub called? The something cow???

Yes i played with alan easterbrook and Steve Arnold they were both about 6ft 3 but easters was about 16stone of muscle while arnie was not as beefy as big al , still see arnie regularly and easters from time to time , they both scored loads of goals but easters in his prime was a nightmare to mark he just did not know how strong he was!, I dont remember the row with winslow but we had plenty ! Peter robinson was also an exceptional player for selby who scored lots of goals, because selby never had a clubhouse we used a few different pubs over the years including the spotted bull , black lion in fishpool street and lastly the old kings arms, laird budge who was manager nowcoaches norwich academy and herts univrsity, good manager, good coach and good bloke

Whats the record gate for a SML fixture?

I remember a Bedford Town vs Bedford United game on Boxing day in the 90s had a huge crowd but can't remember the sort of figure, 1500 sticks in my mind but I could be a mile out. Athletic played them the same season & remember we lost 4-1 on a pitch in a park
