Top ten post war (1945) SML teams

Recommended Posts

Come on anoraks(?) based on league titles, finishing positions and cups. I wonder how many that could make the list aren't around anymore and how many are still going strong.

Ps plastic mods of course since this is another football topic you are excused till Rhodes insults someone and gets hammered then you can come on with your usual insightful observations/comments

I'll throw a few in from 70's & 80's, Barton Rovers, Pirton, Shefford, Selby, Eaton Bray, Shiilington. None of which are still in the league and only Barton playing at higher level!!!

Most of those won things are we're strong sides, don't remember Shillington ever being a real force I'm sure they had a few teams over the years that won a bit but doubt they would be anywhere near top 10-20

Baldock Town, went on to do well in UCL before 15 years in the Southern. Eventually destroyed themelves with a little help from Hitchin Town.

I'd put forward Tring Athletic's team of the 1999/2000 season - mostly pinched from our website history page

Won the Senior Division title (now Div 1) by 11 points we also reached 5 finals. We won the Herts Charity Shield (beating Potters Bar Town 2-1), Herts Senior Centenary Trophy (Wormley Rovers 2-0) # Cherry Red Books Trophy (now Anagram Trophy)in its inaugural year (Bedmond Sports & Social on penalties after a 1-1 draw). We were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Letchworth in the Senior Division Cup and although we also reached the St Marys Cup final it was never played because of the backlog of fixtures & the other semi final was never decided. Our achievements were recognised by the South Midlands who awarded us the Houghton Regis Cup for achievements in outside competitions and Mick Eldridge, Ray Brimson and Richard Vincent were voted Managers of the Season. In 60 games in all competitions we lost on only 6 occasions,

NF I'm happy to hear both I never played in spartan but did play against some of the sides. Just interested in history of clubs so go for your life.

Surely Hoddesdon Town must figure on the list, although no titles in the top flight they do have an impressive list of trophies won.

In a personal opinion with regards to South Midlands football (prior to the merger with the Spartan League) I would have Barton Rovers and Selby high on the list of most successful sides.

I played for selby in my early days and then under laird budge in the good side around late 80s early 90s played with and against some very good players, Laird enjoyed much success as selby manager , i was gutted when selby folded , the reason we folded was our main "sponsor" pulled out , as has happened to many teams since ,i played in selbys last game but i cannot remember who it was against !!

Whats the record gate for a SML fixture?

Good question. Could be difficult I know Winslow 70's and 80's registered crowds over 300 in big league games and had plenty regularly according to ex players and managers and secretary. Berks and bucks cup against Aylesbury was over 900.

Did you play with the big fella Easterbrook(?) and another big lump up front Arnie something? The manager went onto manage Hatfield in the South mids their first time round. My old telling me about a big Barnet after a Winslow Selbey game two sent off for both sides after the game. What was the pub called? The something cow???

Alan Easterbrook played for me at Carlton Under 18 and played for Selby and St Alabans. At this time my Dad ran the reserve team at Selby whilst Dennis Gibbs was manager of the first team.

The pub was called the Spotted Bull in St Albans.
