Margate vs Charlton

I thought we played well and gave a good account as a team against full time players. My only gripe would be our GK (must be a Addicks fan methinks) wasnt even in the game at times - harsh - maybe but with JT or a better keeper 2 of their four goals wouldnt have happened.

All in all we can now concentrate on the league and push on, shame as the added revenue would have been good but all things come to those who wait :)

Interesting how we all have differing views

Turner certainly never did it for me-and i would rate Overland way better.

Do we need to remeber trhat this is the ryman league-keepers make mistakes/have poor games at all levels-and the lower down the leagues you go-the more mistakes keepers make.

Frustrating as it is-do we need to keep our exopectations in check ?

I agree with you DR. Harsh NO true YES. Our weak link.

Thought the lads gave their all again.

Curtis gained M-O-M, no argument with that except I would have given it to the team as a whole for the second game in a row.

This is the best I have seen a Margate team play since the pre Conference season and the First season in the Conference.

Of the last 2 games I did not want either to finish I was enjoying them so much.

Lets hope some of the unattached supporters who came last night return for the next home game. 2 Ramsgate supporters I know said they would be at the next game.

Very good match report on the Charlton official web site.

According to Charlton's match report on their website their were 7 players last night that have played for Charlton 1st team. Out of them, there were i believe 5 that play fairly regularly for them.

A lot of i am sure deserved praise for Curtis last night -with Tom Bradbrook back in the team-did Curtis play 'wide left' last night .

(could it still be curtis who is first to leave to play at a higher level ?)

Leon Clarke or Kwesi Appiah-who looks the striker best equipped to play at league 1 level ?

The answer to my first question is of course to be found in wellsies interview with curtis

All positives taken from last night.

Final score was the only blip but apart from that we get a smashing crowd for a KS cup game.

Our top scorer,(countrys top scorer in all leagues in all competitions) keeps his min one a game goal momentum up.(35th in all comps plus 6 in 8 friendlies totalling 41)

The whole team played exceedingly well against a strong Charlton team.

Some cracking goals from others again rather than just KA (how good are those headed goals by Avery eh?).

Met a few new visitors who said they would be returning,(female as well as male, both young & old).

Met & spoke to a Councillor in attendance looking impressed (& giving off good vibes re:development).

Met & spoke to some ardent but also very pleaseant Charlton supporters.(I think one went home after having purchased an MFC shirt)

The game itself was entertaining and certainly flowed from end to end.

Hendon v Wealdstone, both only bagged a point each in their league match.

All in all a smashing night.

Curtis had a damn fine game(as did all the team), only nag is that the lad was totally knackered on about 70 mins and fresh legs would have been sensible bearing in mind our league games approaching. Burch was as ever lively when he finally appeared too late. Other than that, Margate did the Town proud!

As a goalkeeper myself, I know and Simon will tell you that goalkeepers are a big part of football and don't get enough praise. I know Simon has saved Margate in games and got them 3 points in some games so saying that he was the weak link is a right pisstake, the things with fans they are too quick to jump on players back. He wouldn't be in the ryman league if he saved everything.

I've had time to mull this over and I can't help but feel that we were mugged! Normally at our level The refereeing standards are nothing short of shambolic, but I did comment to those with me at the game how pleasant it was not to come along and have the referee grabbing all the attention. I thought he handled the game very well, was barely heard but he did make 2 absolute howlers which cost us the game - Law 5 states:

"The referee allows play to continue when the team against which an offence has been committed will benefit from such an advantage and penalises the original offence if the anticipated advantage does not ensue at that time".

I would say that the anticipated advantage from the cross which led to the free-kick given for the fourth goal was an attempt at goal - which the Charlton player had, heading the ball over the target. To bring the ball back for the free-kick which the decisive goal was scored from was a clear error.

Everybody knows the handball rule - except for the linesman who had a clear view of the incident, as did I stood right in front of it - another very poor decision.

Very disappointed because I think the lads were an absolute credit last night and on the wrong end of two shocking and game deciding refereeing decisions!

see my comments above, Simon has made some cracking saves and we came away with our heads held high so no shame for anyone in the team. And keepers dont get enough praise ...they get grief from the opposition fans behind the goal...and from a personal girlie point of view they are often nice hunky big lads. .. :P

totally agree with all you say and for some say he's the weak link is a insult to the lad.....short memories some, last season JT was getting slated for some howlers then played a blinder, he's a good keeper and mistakes happen so give the guy praise not pick up on the negatives that happen now and then.....

Wow everybody seems to be jumping on the fact that I personally thought Mr Overland made two howling judgement calls, and yes to be fair to him he also made some good saves as well. My point and I stand by this the goalkeepers on the night were not on top of their game - both seemed edgy and this IMO showed. Would I say that the GK is the weak link the simple answer is a whole hearted YES because they are the BIGGEST player on the pitch with the biggest job and if they make a mistake it shows in the score however if a striker misses, never mind try again. Ask any GK and they will probs agree and as the saying goes

"THE BUCK STOPS HERE"

Just imagining what they were thinking ...

Overland - This is Charlton and they are much higher up than us...they'll be hard to beat ...pressure!

Charlton Keeper - This is Margate and they are much lower than us...I'll look a right numpty if they get any past me...pressure!

could explain the 'edgy' bit? ;)
