What LEWES thought

Lewes suffered their worst result on the road this afternoon following a 5-1 spanking by in-form Margate.

It was the hosts fifth victory on the trot and although they looked good for the win, the scoreline massively overstated their superiority.

However, the simple fact was that Margate took their chances and Lewes didn't, otherwise the goals may have been a fairer reflection on the afternoon's events.

After a scoreless first half, two goals in two minutes from Matt Bodkin and Dan Stubbs stunned Lewes, and Paul Booth's penalty turned out to be mere consolation after Richard Avery, Bodkin and Kwesi Appiah completed the plunder for Gate.

Not a bad reflection of the game IMO but I thought the second half was all us as their heads dropped after the 3rd goal and our confidence looked sky high. :)

That sanguine reaction confirms my suspicions about them as a set of 'fans'. I thought their defending was poor for all the goals except Stubbs'. Yes, there was some tippy-tappy stuff but that counts for little without organisation and determination and I'm not sure how many of their better paid players are going to hang around now Steve King is no more. Put it this way, if we conceded five goals in 27 minutes I'd be spitting blood.

How can they say "scoreline massively overstated their superiority. ", We were dominate for most of the first half, and dominate all of the second half. They were a strong team, but do you know what, WE WERE MUCH BETTER THAN THEM.

It really struck me how when we didn't have the ball we were disciplined with our 2 banks of 4 sat inside our own half. When we did have the ball, we broke quuickly with pace down either wing. Lewes chose to pass broadly sidewards in midfield a lot of the time, which looked pretty but gave plenty of warning for our mdifield and defence.

Lewes did look dangerous when Nanetti had a run at us out wide, but then they went back to passing it nicely in the middle.

The essence of success in this league seems to me to be organisation, effectiveness in both boxes with attacking the opposition half at pace.

And we shouldnt underestimate the importance of the roles Richard Avery and Mark Corneille play.
