Thanks to Grimsby

I just thought I would add my comments about yesterday's game from the perspective of someone who has the privilege of doing what I do for the club and the honour of having access to club boardrooms before and after games.

Everyone from Grimsby I had dealings with on the day were fantastic to me, from the people in the office who kindly arranged access for me to the TV gantry and who patiently dealt with my ever changing requests for boardroom passes and director's area tickets etc, to the stewards in the stands who were more than willing to help a wimp like me when I nearly chickened out of scaling the vertical 10/15 ft ladder through a hole in the back of the stand, walking across the roof of the stand, and then back through a hole in the front of the stand and down another 10/15 ft vertical ladder to get to the TV gantry, to the 3 Grimsby camera crew, who like me are supporters of their club and do what they do because they enjoy it, and who offered to help me get my camera gear on and off the gantry when they saw I was clearly struggling. It was really interesting talking to those 3 guys, as it was talking to the Grimsby directors after the game who were very complimentary about our performance and who made us feel very welcome. This is what football at all levels should be about.

To any Grimsby supporters still reading this forum, you have a terrific set of people involved at your club.

I'm very proud of our team's performance on the day as I am of the supporters who made the journey and clearly enjoyed themselves. I really wanted to film the conga, but the ball was at the other end of the field and I was frightened of missing something.

In case you were wondering the journey back to terra firma from the TV gantry was no easier for me and I was literally petrified.

I was in a prime position to take a video of the conga and of the tremendous support shown by our fans had it not been for a 'jobsworth' who threatened to relieve me of my video camera if he saw it being used. Sadly my explanation that the video was only for our website cut no ice. That was a real shame. Obviously VIP's were treated somewhat differently. :D

I believe that one of the rules of the conference league is that no photography of any sort is allowed in conference grounds unless it is carried out by a person that is licenced by the conference, who apparently take a large fee for the licence.

It is a shame of course.

In Grimsby's defence, some of their supporters pay a subscription which allows them to view, through their website, highlights of the day's match so I guess they are trying to protect that priority access for them. For my part, I did contact the club about a week before the game and was given permission on the proviso that I didn't upload any clips until after the weekend.

Ha ha, the access to our gantry is definitely unique. You do get a good view of The River Humber though.

Glad you enjoyed your time oop norf. For the supporter who said he wasn't allowed to drink whilst watching the game the rule is at all levels of football down to the BSS and BSN, no alcohol can be drunk within sight of the playing area whilst the game is in progress. I took in a couple of Zamaretto League games last season at Chippenham and Swindon Supermarine and it was a nice change to be able to stand at the side of the pitch with a pint in my hand. As for the photography angle, legally is isn't allowed but I've managed to take quite a few picture at grounds over the year without being warned so I'm a bit surprised that they wouldn't allow photographs to be taken.

Your players were a credit to your club as well as the supporters. A few months ago you would probably have got something from the game on Saturday but just recently our run of form has been superb and that's now 17 games unbeaten (in 90 minutes) in all competitons. (The only defeat was in The FA Cup after extra time).

Whether our paths will ever cross again I don't know but good luck for the future and hope that you can make it to the BSS next season.

Nice to have met you on Saturday Harry and thanks for all your input.

No hard feelings about my beer, guess I should be flattered that at the ripe old age of 66 I can still be considered a potential threat but one should set an example to the young uns. But so very chilly in that bar under the stand, needed to get upstairs for some warmth.
