Postman do not sort to postcodes,Machines do,take it from me.10 Croydon's in the U.K.do they all use CRO Postcodes No.Merstham has a RH Postcode.

V.P.C.T.F.C. Would like to challenge your suggestion that Royal Mail.only use postcodes to sort the Mail.Do they no longer sort to Surrey,Middlesex,Kent,Sussex,FRAMES AND BOXES.

 

No. I've been there 17 years and never known that and with the 'intelligent' sorting machines that are everywhere now hardly anything is sorted by hand these days. A lot of mail isn't even sorted by the individual posties when it arrives at the Delivery Office these days as we have walk sequencing machines that put it into the correct order for delivery for them. Personally I think they're a waste of money as they cost millions to buy and run and only save each postie about 15 minutes a day. I'm not an accountant but I can't see how Royal Mail think they're worth the money but there you go.

You can put a county on your mail if you want but you're wasting your time.

If you print your own postage from the Royal Mail website it won't have a county on it. The Postal Address File on the website that has details of every delivery point in the UK hasn't got any counties in it. It's an archaic method of sorting mail as there has been so much change in the mail centres. There used to be one mail centre for each postcode area and counties may have been useful in those days but there's been so much consolidation and cut backs that many mail centres now handle three or more postcode areas' mail. For example, mail for the KT, TW and GU areas is all sorted at Hounslow (just past Hanworth Villa's ground). That includes addresses in Surrey, Berkshire, Hampshire, Sussex and Greater London (or Middlesex if you don't like change!) and all those counties also have other mail centres covering some parts of them so putting a county on isn't going to help get the mail to the right place.
