Duchess of York to be prosecuted

Recommended Posts

A court in Turkey has said it plans to prosecute the Duchess of York for secretly filming orphans in the country for a television documentary.

The Duchess visited the orphanage near Ankara while making a film for the ITV Tonight programme in 2008.

The court plans to accuse her of going "against the law in acquiring footage and violating privacy" of five children.

The Duchess's spokesman said she would not be commenting.

But the BBC's royal correspondent Peter Hunt said a source close to the Duchess had expressed surprise at the development.

The source also pointed out that the Turkish authorities tried and failed to bring action in the UK, and that the British government was not involved in the case.

The Duchess was, said the source, just trying to run a humanitarian trip and was surprised she was being brought to task when it was ITV that filmed the documentary.

She would face a maximum term of more than 22 years in prison if convicted.

The Duchess wore a disguise to enter the institution and filmed scenes of children tied to their beds and left in cots all day.

At the time, the Turkish government accused her of being involved in a "smudge campaign" when Turkey was trying to get membership of the European Union.

But the Duchess, who also filmed orphanages in Romania for the programme, said she was "apolitical" and had gone purely as a mother, and she was "happy with courage to stand by the film".

It is unclear why it has taken over three years for charges to be laid, and no trial date has yet been set.

Co-incidentally she would face criminal charges here in the UK if she took photographs or video of children in care without parental or social services (what is known as "Parental Responsibility") permission which more than probably would not be given, it is illegal to publish or take for publication images of the faces or distinguishing or identifiable features of children in care.

I'm sure this will spark another needless argument but just pointing out the facts.

IMO Turkey and Romania have some very strange attitudes and funding towards these types of children.

I go swimming most days, and recently a grandmother was reduced to tears because she was reprimanded, and threatened with having her camera confiscated by some jobsworth because she committed the heinous crime of taking photos of her grandchildren.

With regards to Fergie, I met her once very briefly at Great Ormand School Hospital and she did an amazing amount of work for the children, and raised huge amounts of money, all conditional on her good deeds not being publicised. Even the most cynical nurses and doctors thought the world of her. She certainly does some stupid things, and probably deserves most of the bad press she gets, but when it comes to children I really believe her hearts in the right place.

Oh I don't doubt that her heart is in the right place on this misunderstood. She is a bit of a bumbler though.

It is a tragedy that family members can't take photos of their kids in a swimming pool or at a school play etc etc but the fear for that organisation is that other children without that link and inherent PR might be included in the snaps and their prevention of those photos or video being taken opens the organisation to liability. It's the world we, our politicians and their attempts to protect children from predators has placed us in. Don't shoot the messenger lol!

I took my six month old grand- daughter to our local baths on Monday and would have loved to have taken some snaps, and I'm sure she would have enjoyed looking at them in years to come. What a sad world we live in.

In a sense its not genuine people like yourself that their trying to protect against.

Perhaps got to think of it another way, that you won't fear getting a visit one day in the distant future from a child protection squad asking you to identify your grand-daughter from images found on some creeps hard drive.

Maybe its time our legislators considered the using of chemical or surgical castration on convicted sexual predators as the ultimate deterrent.

A few years ago, a famous female tv personality took photo's of her children in the bath.

After taking the film in to be processed, she was visited by the police. Luckily all was resolved.

I admit there has to be some level of safety where children are concerned, but this is going too far.

As far as Fergie is concerned, her intentions were well founded in bringing the despicable conditions in Turkey into the public domain, and this prosecution will never go ahead.

Incidently, in our local swimming pool, there are large signs everywhere stating quite plainly that all cameras, VTR's and mobile phones are banned from the pool area.

The strangest sign I ever saw in a swimming pool was in Phnom Penh which said "no p1ssing in the water". They also proudly displayed a plaque in the foyer from the UN thanking the hotel because no UN staff members had been killed in the previous six months.

Nothing so glamorous I'm afraid. My wife and I was just visiting our son who was lecturing at Phnon Penh university and doing some freelance journalism. I never felt safe in Phnom Penh, but Angkor Wat was the most awesome place I have ever seen.

I think this post says it all on the topic really, Countries such as Turkey, Romania and Albania need to take a long hard look at themselves when it comes to their disgraceful orphanages

Shouldn't that be the Khmer Rouge, as Phnom Penh is in Cambodia not Vietnam?

The Americans bombed the sh1t out of Cambodia because they thought they was harbouring VC freedom fighters. The Khmer Rouge did more damage to Cambodia than the Americans, and the country still bears the scares.

I thought Cambodia was an unfriendly place, and lacking in the natural beauty of some other Asian countries. I was told that the unfriendliness was because they assumed that every English speaking visitor of a certain age was ex American armed forces who had come back to gloat over the carnage they had caused, and who can blame the Cambodians for that.
