A great piece of nostalgia you have compiled Jeff, but looking at the photo of Tommy Barnett I am not certain it is actually the great man. Romford signed Tom from Margate for the princely sum of £200 and he went on to become a Romford legend, who we still talk about to this present day. He now owns the Tom Barnett brewery in Sawbridgeworth and apparently sells some seriously good beer.

 

On the subject of nostalgia, before Christmas our oldest and bitterest rivals, Chelmsford City held a nostalgia evening where some of the players from the 60s reminisced about the good old days, and then answered questions from the audience. There must have been about 400 people, from both clubs there and everyone had a great time, and I would imagine Chelmsford made a lot of money that night. An idea for Margate to make some money perhaps.

Glad you like the site, I'm sure that's Tommy in the photo on his page - it came from an article in the local paper when he signed for Margate and he's also in a 1961/62 team photo on the site. Didn't know about the brewery so I'll add that info next time I do an update.

Playing for Romford must have aged him very quickly then.

 

Apparently Toms brewery sell beers called Brooklands Express (named after our old stadium) Selhurst Flyer, and Piledriver. Maybe if you placed a decent order he could do a Hartsdown Hero (or a name more to your liking) beer for you. The brewery has a website thats easy to locate.

 

Good luck for the rest of the season, and hopefully Romford can soon enjoy an away day at your new stadium.

I have to say I love the history site I am into history generally and combine that with the Mighty Margate - win win!
