Nothing wrong with the VERY FEW Ladies referees we have.

From personal experience, generally far better than male refs !!

(Dons 'tin-hat')

But I thought many of the Older Women Refs had retired, maybe Kroons could update.

Over to you, Krooner !!

I'm told that ladies won't ref because they feel they are, (possibly rightly), deemed inferior and stupid by the run of the mill 'men' in football.

A rather recent public tirade against a female official in the professional game, endorsed and supported by the 'popular' national press is a case of proof in question.

Battle of the Corbet Field will go down in local folklore for all the wrong reasons. Team should have been permanently banned from the friendly games. Referee was Wendy Toms, a very nice lady.

A brief report from another Forum on South Kilburn's game on Saturday, it says it all really:

Combined Counties One

South Kilburn 0-3 Hartley Wintney

Horrible ground out the back of a leisure centre. There's an athletics track around the track but thankfully it's ignored and spectators can stroll across between the occasional jogger.

The team have a poor reputation locally and sadly they lived up to it.

Thankfully most people pay little attention to the papers and their nonsense and so there was righteous anger at the comments made.

Given that there's more Select Group Assistant Referees ((AR) that is, those who can do Premier League games) than there are ever games at that level on a weekend / during the week, it's unlikely she'll have a game every week as an AR. Factor in too that she's a referee primarily so she will also be doing games in the middle albeit at the level she's qualified for. This could be at Contributory League if she's a Level 3 referee, Conference North or South if she's a Level 2b or Conference Main if she's a Level 2A.

ARs at her level and those on the Football League will be assessed on every gane and their susbequent appointments will be based on their position in their respective merit tables which will reflect their performance in comparison to their peers. For reference, referees at Supply League in the Combined Counties League are Level 4 for the Premier Division, Level 5 - 7 for Division 1 and Reserves.

Not if she wants to progress as a referee doing games in the middle. The next step for her would be in the middle at Football League level which I would presume is an ambition / objective of hers to achieve.

Once you get to Level 3 as a referee, for a variety of reasons, you may not progress any further than that as a referee (in the middle) but you could progress further as an AR (on the line). In effect, a form of 'streaming' occurs and some referees subsequently end up becoming 'specialist' ARs. Examples of this would be Mike Mullarkey and Gary Cann who were ARs to Howard Webb at the World Cup Final but whom I believe are Level 3 referees - I stand to be corrected on that point though.

Thanks again for your reply,my view is that it is a backward step for the Young Lady in question, who has achieved so much in a Male Dominated Sport. My view is the F.A.should of backed her to the hilt, and given her more opportunities at Championship Level, call it a learning curve. They like this Country are scared of Media opinion and lack Respect.

Without the statistics to show how many games she's done in comparison to her peers this season, I don't agree that it's a backward step for her. She may have been identified as having the potential to progress as a referee in the Football League so in consideration / preparation for that she's being given games at the level below that. You'd need to ask her if she wanted to be a Football League (FL) or Premier League (PL) referee or a FL or PL Assistant Referee. I imagine it's the former and, if that is the case, she would want to do more middles than lines to achieve that.

Smudge, also, just to clarify: It is typical for an official to be permitted to act as an Assistant Referee a level above they are allowed to act as a Referee.

It's the same learning curve down at the Combined Counties level: I can happily run the line on the Premier but only referee the Reserves.

As a result, the official refereeing at a level below her normal Assistant level, is to be expected.
