Sheerwater v Guernsey FC, 6-1-12

I hope Sheerwater are looking forward to welcoming the League Leaders on Saturday?

I saw on twitter last night that their 12th man is travelling with them for the first ever time. Namely Roary the Lion who is accompanying the players!

Anyone from here going to the top v bottom match?

Yes, 'Roary' really is looking forward to his first away match for the Green Lions and not only meeting the players, officials and fans of Sheerwater FC but also the many Guernsey FC supporters who go to the away games.

No doubt he will be leading the singing of the Guernsey supporters and showing everybody his slick moves.

Not to sure how well he will find his first flight away from the Island, being green it will be hard to tell.

Lets hope he enjoys his visit to Sheerwater and makes a good impression.

Tony Vance has picked a strong 15-man squad for the opening match of 2012 as the Green Lions travel to bottom of the table Sheerwater on Saturday.

With players returning from injury over the Christmas break, Vance has genuine selection decisions over who should travel, with Glyn Dyer the man made to wait a bit longer after recovering from his knee injury.

Chris Tardif and Kieran Mahon are both unavailable for the game, the latter missing most of January, while Scott Bradford has again forced his way into the matchday squad.

When the Green Lions met Sheerwater back in September, it was a resounding 9-0 win, with that day's four-goal man Ross Allen set to keep alive his record of playing in every GFC game this season.

Saturday's game kicks off at 1pm.

Squad:

Paul de Garis, Jacques Isabelle, Simon Geall, Tom Strawbridge, Jamie Dodd, Sam Cochrane, Jason Winch, Ollie McKenzie, Ryan-Zico Black, Angus Mackay, Scott Bradford, Dom Heaume, Matt Loaring, Ross Allen, Dave Rihoy.

0-1 to Guernsey at half time.

Fairly even although guernsey had the better chances. Sheers were creating some pressure but no shots on target. Guernsey then had pen saved on 38 mins before going ahead just before HT.

A very creditable performance by Sheerwater today and belied their position in the table. They had just as much possession as Guernsey for much of the game, the difference being that Guernsey's passing and shooting was miles better. At 1-1 we might have had a game on but as they often seem to do, the Green Lions stepped up a gear and put the game beyond Sheers with a couple of quick goals. 1-4 was a bit flattering but this could be down to Guernsey not having played for a month as they looked a bit rusty.

150 there today which was nice to see for Trevor and all those involved with Sheerwater.

Good to see Young Veteran again and to properly meet loop. And I met a whole gaggle of Guernsey celebs including maisiecat, the chairman Steve and best of all Roary the Lion! He has a cushy job as he gets to cuddle all the female Guernsey fans after every goal. He will be knackered come the end of the season!!

photodiary of the day and huge thanks to you Bomaya for the last programme needed!

Just what a good non league day should be like..brilliant day out. Great hospitality.

Having just looked up the photos, I have to say everyone seems to be having fun, which at the end of the day is what non-league should be about. For some unknown reason a ''good'' club mascot lightens up the atmosphere and brings a lot of fun and joy to people lives especially kids. I only wish other clubs have mascots...... strange as that may seem.

For you Guernseyrites, do you know if Roary actually gets paid for his duties or is he (could be a she !) like everyone else in non-league a volunteer ?

Doesn't that somewhat contradict your view NG that players that want to get on should avoid the "playing with mates" syndrome  .

Thank you for the fudge and postcards!

PS. Was that our very own Bob Hoskins refeering? If so I can see why he is a favourite.

Also saw Neil Morrell there plus a League official, not sure who it was though.

Good heavens! of course Roary does not get paid!!, nobody gets paid in GFC. He, like everyone, is in this for fun!

He does have his own sponsor, Alliance ( a local cash and carry/supermarket) and he has made a couple of personal appearances there. The forthcoming range of Roary merchandise will help with ongoing costs.

Yes, Neil was there and bought me along my SK programme.

Did you see the picture of him getting a hug from Roary :-) ??

I did also meet the other league official but did not get his name, he and Neil were sitting by me.
