another one for the refs.

Recommended Posts

according to the referee today, you do not have to tell a player that they have been cautioned. This is what I was told when I spoke to the ref in the bar and told him our player didn't know he was cautioned. Flashing a yellow card for the world to see is all you need to do, apparantely.

Please discuss.

The player obviously has to be told that he is being cautioned and the referee SHOULD ask him his name. Th player should be told the reason why he is being cautioned.

The yellow card is for the benefit of others as much as anything.

If the player is not aware he is cautioned then what happens should he receive a second caution?

If the referee does not enquire of his name then how does he know who to report to the County ... players are not always as per team sheet

God help us

As ref's have teamsheets its not necessary to take a players full name, but I would suggest it is good practice to ask the player to confirm either their first name or surname, so the referee can ensure afterwards that the name given matches the teamsheet.

The player should be shown the yellow card to their face. If the referee showed it to the player whilst his back was turned then this should have been noted by the assessor (if one was present) and the referee will be marked down for this.

Makes more sense if the ref 1, calls the player to him 2, asks for his name 3, shows the yellow card and the game can continue where can that possibly go wrong to start making up some story about whether you booked somebody or not is Ballix everyone who is watching should would know if they carried out these simple steps,WTF is going on.

i thought so. Couldn't belive what I was told afterwards. Another one of these up-starts who sees what happens on the tv and thinks it is right. They are quick to tell players this is not the premier league when you get the classic 'they do it on the telly', but it has to work both ways.

My understanding is that a referee does not have to say why a player is being booked or indeed sent off, has to show the card so the player knows hes been cautioned or sent from the field of play. What happens if the player speak no English, referee can talk to him until the cows come home.

agree with duncs, if this were true, it seems the ref is making it up as he goes along. and not even the officials on this site can justify that.

1) The game must be stopped. Obviously you may play an advantage but then you will have to wait for a stoppage in play.

2) You should call the player to you

3) You should ensure that you know the name of the player that you are cautioning

4) More often than not the player will know why he is being cautioned but I will clarify if the player asks. Strangely, they normally ask when it is for dissent

5) The yellow card should then be shown so that not only does the player know (he should by this stage) but everybody else knows

Fairly simple process

I know that this varies slightly the higher up you go ... you are not likely to see a referee ask Wayne Rooney etc what his name is but by the end of the process the referee should know who he has cautioned and the offending player should be in no doubt that he is in the referees notebook

I'll clarify as well, this was not a player being ignorent towards the referee. He had just commited the foul and was sorting himself out, the referee did not call him over, just ran towards him flashing a card which was not seen by the player. He didn't even shout the players number before flashing the card.

Accorinding to the referee, this was changed in the last year or two that you 'don't need to tell the player'. If this is true, what the hell are these guys being instructed? I certainly don't remember being told this way of cautioning or dismissing a player when I did my exam.

Some time since I passed my exam as well TC but a player must always be aware that he has been cautioned

He might not have to be told as to why he is being cautioned but I think it good man management to let him know why this is happening should there be any doubt

At this level you do not need to take the name of the player just the number....again at this level the team sheets should be correct. When you issue the crime sheet you write the name of the player on this sheet and hand it to a club official who then checks it...

As for the issuing of the card the player must be aware that he has been cautioned and know why although 99% of the time they will know why so you do not have to tell them, however if there is the slightest hint of doubt i will tell him.

I hope no-one is inferring that there may be a few 'ringers' playing in the CCL ??

Ideally you'd want to isolate the player who is about to be cautioned, ensure he / she is standing ie not sat / crouched on the ground, tying laces / pulling up socks, enquire as to their identity (even if you have team sheets), inform them they are being cautioned (and reason why if requested), warn them as to their future conduct and then show the yellow card to the guilty player face before play is restarted. Should leave no one in any doubt.
