The Legendary Mad Man on the Mike sadly passed away on Sunday.

Famous, of course, as Returning Officer when Michael Portillo lost his seat in 1997. Apparently the clip of him declaring the result was voted 2nd or 3rd most significant in the 90s or the 20th century in a poll around the millennium.

Perhaps now would be a good time to remember that Pat was capable of being genuinely and spontaneously witty, and could deliver a heckle at a volume that could be heard several streets away. His finest moment was a 'difference of opinion' with Bath City centre half Tony Ricketts many years ago. After a bit of verbal jousting, Patrick yelled "if you had a nose like that on the other side of your head, you'd be a pick-axe!" At this point several players on both sides collapsed laughing, as did the referee, who delayed the restart for several seconds while he composed himself.
