Ryman League - Northwood 0 Hornchurch 1

This was always going to be an interesting match irrespective of league position, and we managed to get some revenge for the double defeat at their ground last season.

Northwood had an early chance when a turn and shot after a good move from Kieran Knight flashed across goal in the 6th minute but this was followed by a succession of chances for us. Vinnie John directed a strong header straight at keeper Rob Bullivant in the 13th minute and Andy Douglas shot over 5 minutes later from a Vinnie John chest down in the area. A few minutes later John repeated the trick and Douglas, with an excellent scoring opportunity, sent in a soft shot from 6 yards which Bullivant got down to easily. Then, three minutes later a penetrating run from John Keeling ended with a shot which came back of the post and was cleared. Douglas - not having a good day - turned and shot over from the edge of the area with about 15 minutes of the half to go after which Northwood went straight up the other end and spurned a chance through Brian Fitzgerald who screwed a shot wide when well placed. Then, on 42 minutes, Vinnie John was brought down in the area and Steve West stepped up to blast the ball home.

Northwood had more possession in the second half but our defence was superb. Our chances were fewer - a Douglas shot across goal on 68 minutes, Vinnie John going wide 10 minutes later with a header from a Mark Graham cross and John Martin shooting over from 18 yards with 10 minutes to go - but Northwood struggled to penetrate. Hearts missed a beat when Knight shot from the edge of the area through a forest of legs but Michael Collier was perfectly positioned to collect.

Line-up:- Collier, Sterling, Kerrigan, Adedeji, West, Southon, Keeling, J Martin (Rowland 89), John, Douglas (A Martin 86), Graham. Subs not used:- Locke, Maynard, Wray (GK)

good win last night at a very difficult venue...not many teams will come away from there with 3 points on a Tuesday evening in October...

GB proved again last night that he knows his stuff....Lockie in for JS on saturday playing a weakened team on a perfect pitch....

Jamie back last night on a cowfield with Lockie left out and I understand the spine of westie... jamie and vinnie were awesome against strong physical opponents...

great stuff....3 points and off into the night laughing.... <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

yes i also agree that perehaps taff should be given a chance to start a game, his awareness of the game alongside vinny is the spark were missing up front at the moment, andy douglas's time will come but lets hope we don't have to wait to long to see it, anyway over all a very good result for us and a very nice touch for us traveling away supporters at the end of the game when george brought all the players down to applaud the fans and shake their hands, nice touch lets keep it up for all the games please george, us fans appreciate it......................

From my angle, and on a perfect pitch , last night was the bit of a "turn round" from last season's two results there.

We really should have won 3 or 4 nil

Yes nice touch at the end GB taking players to the fans, makes travelling even better, and well done to the River/ East Side as well.

Special mention for Betty's dogs, absolutely deeeeelicious!!

mmm...I don't know, i have a mixed view on this. I don't neccasarry believe that if you want a player to get out a "barron spell" you leave them out as it sometimes knocks their confidence for six.

But then again i'm not totally sure watching Dougie that he is completelly match fit ?, he just seems a bit laphargic on the ball.

I think i'll leave it down to George !
